Support the Continued-Prosperity Fee!
In response to the People's E-Mail Network effort to oppose repeal of the estate tax, I sent the following personal message:

"The estate tax, misnamed a 'death tax,' should be more-accurately seen as the 'continued-prosperity fee.' It represents a giving back to society of a small part of the riches amassed by the very richest, who have had the benefit of living in a stable, prosperous society. Its abolition reflects the most-disgusting impulses of America: to hurt the poor to benefit the rich, to deny the advantages of living in American society, to elevate individual greed above public good. As a practical matter, the U.S. government (largely as a result of tax breaks for the very richest Americans) has plunged into unprecedented deficits that have so grown the debt as to threaten the bases of continued American prosperity. We are in effect selling ourselves to others (particularly to China) to support an ultimately-unsupportable orgy of deficit spending. The repeal of the estate tax is a major prop to this policy of undermining the American economy. Vote against repeal of the estate tax; let the estate tax regain its bite; support a prosperous American economy, not an indebted parasitic economy."

My e-mail will fall on the deaf ears of rightwing Texas senators; but it is important to make our demands even when we know that they will be ignored.
