VIDEO-Bob Schieffer blasts the Administration on" Torture" |
|
http://www.crooksandliars.com/2005/07/31.html#a4248Lately Bob's commentaries have been highly critical of the President and his administration. Today's was no different: Bob: "McCain was learning about torture when members of this administration were in graduate school."

3. I think everyone is giving McCain far too much credit on this. |
|
The North Vietnamese engaged in illegal torture to which McCain, among others, was subjected. This does mean that he knows what torture is - but I really think most people have sufficient imagination hearing about methods of torture used, to not need personal experience to understand why it is wrong.
McCain was against torture because HE was captured and tortured, but McCain said even last year that he had problems with Kerry speaking out (as a 27 yr old war hero who could have ignored the moral issues) against American war crimes (carpet bombings, free fire zones, violations of the Geneva conventions, and already known atrocities - Soldiers had already been convicted in the My Lai Massacure.) Even after more than 30 years of reflection, he is unwilling to critise his millitary peers for anything they did wrong. It took greater courage and moral conviction to speak the truth about actions done in America's name that would embarrass most Americans.
I am glad that he is now talking about amendments that will specify what torture is, but he did vote for Gonsales - when Senator Kennedy and other discussed at length the types of tortures that were approved in his memo. Even on torture, an issue that should be close to his heart, MCCain plays politics.

5. i do agree that mccain - like other politicians - gets political "credit" |

Edited on Sun Jul-31-05 05:13 PM by faithnotgreed
for something that can be very real but said politicians also often legislate just the opposite which doesnt seem to make the news
so its quite confusing and i dont understand why all john mccain went through does not consistently show up in his political votes
though to be fair he didnt support bush trying to veto the defense bill (because it included amendments to stop the torture) so at least in that case he voted the right way
i cant even imagine what he is thinking all those other times there doesnt seem to be any legitimate reason for his being led around like a puppy by bush i could more understand if he portrayed himself as that type but he doesnt he likes publicly to portray himself as straight talking working for the best interests of the people and not just another rubberstamp
i thought he was such a "maverick" (as every political commentator and writer likes to describe him) but he actually has been publicly stumping for bush since just before last election
i can only think he may have been promised or threatened with something because i remember seeing him on a news show before that where he was asked if he talks to bush and he said no that they hadnt spoken much and described their relationship as "cordial"
so it continues in the news that there is some long term tension there finally when bush wants (needs) his support before the election he must do something behind the scenes because all of a sudden they are seen everywhere together (see famous hugging photo) and we know what has been happening since then
imagine that - a manipulated inconsistent politician
