Scary thought : World War over dwindling oil supply? (opinion)
It's in the near future, we can't get away from it. Unless, of course the entire world gets wise and realizes that we're killing our planet (think of the oil as the blood in our bodies - what happens when it's all drained???).

Aside from that, with many countries becoming more industrialized, more countries seeing the duckets to be made on oil & therefore jumping on the bandwagon, and most of these other countries hating W. for stealing most of Iraqs' oil, what's the next move??? Are we in for all these countries, including the US trying to have control over what's left by blowing each other up or using extreme embargos or economic santions?

Flame me if you must but the :tinfoilhat: is running rampant this morning.

1. In 20 years I expect to hear of wars for rice in Asia
So a war for oil to me is very likely.

3. That is precisely our foreign policy
"Kick their ass and take their gas."

And it is going to go very poorly for us.

4. I think...
It's becoming clear that this is a very real option. America made the first move, knowing more than anybody about the amounts of oil. China clearly has been making moves to secure oil as well.

5. The NeoCon error in judgment
is that they believe that the only way to win an oil war is with guns and bombs.

They will discover that without an economy, you can't make war very well, particularly the kind of war where you hold and secure resources from occupied territories.

That is why I have been saying that America will have a command economy by the end of **'s term. Because China, Russia, India, and the EU can, and will scuttle our economy, if it comes down to it. And ** is going to make damned sure it comes to it.

7. Damn, realpolitik, that's an even scarier thought than mine!
I'm not flaming you but I'm not laughing either. I've been thinking along the same lines (kind of) that * wants to revert back to the days of the depression era and what you're saying really, really makes sense. Damn.....:scared:

17. Consider what would happen if oil
was bought and sold only in Euros, Rubles, and Yuan.

Think about all those dollars we have printed exclusively to buy and sell oil with suddenly coming home to sit in banks.

What kind of hyper inflation would that cause?

Two words-- Weimar government.

9. more like a palace economy
A mere command economy fails to characterize their active disdain for those outside the elite.

14. I hear you
but the problem with the oligarchy's disdain is that we live in a heavily armed society, and none of our public resources are hardened against domestic asymettrical warfare.

6. There WILL be problems. There WERE two approaches.
One involved developing technological solutions, forming webs of global cooperation, and planning for a sustainable, long term future.

The other takes advantage of a dire situation for massive, short term gain limited to a ruling elite, at the expense of national prestige, global stability and economic viability, and creates a serious risk of major societal regression and potentially will result in the deaths of billions.

This administration chose the latter approach. It remains to be seen if the rest of the world can reject our approach, ignore us, and build their own viable future while our nation rots. But, so long as we accept the rule of this administration, and allow it to continue in violation of our laws and constitution, we are doomed.

12. I don't understand how it is possible that so many people are in denial.
Both the government and the public are silent about it, in spite of many reports and indicators. I mean everyone knows oil prices have risen very quickly and are now higher then they have been in a long time. Does no-one ever wonder if perhaps these prices might -not- come down sometime?
The amount of attention threads like this one get is testimony.

13. Here's what I've read -
most of this comes from Stan Goff and From the Wilderness:

a) We are running out of oil. The U.S. would not have done what it did, if not for this fact. We didn't just go into Iraq to secure their oil, we set up a Police Station in Iraq. It was meant to police the entire Middle East. We are desperately dependent on their oil.

b) Without access to oil, our society collapses. It's no coincidence that our GDP has gone up almost parallel with our oil consumption = our wealth comes from oil.

c) our planet can sustain about 2 billion people without using oil for agriculture. Last time I checked, we now have 6 1/2 billion people. That means 4 1/2 billion people are at risk.

d) Finally, I come to your conclusion, as well. Wars will be (are) fought over oil.

16. Some food for thought...
"...During a visit to China on July 10, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice maintained that the US would not withdraw from Afghanistan. “It is our understanding that the people of Afghanistan want and need the help of the US armed forces,” she declared at a Beijing press conference. Having established a footprint in Central Asia for the first time in history, US imperialism does not intend to leave.

On July 14, the chairman of US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Richard Myers openly accused China and Russia of “trying to bully” the Central Asian states into calling for the closure of the American bases. Just who is bullying whom, however, was demonstrated this week, when US Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld flew into Kyrgyzstan and rapidly extracted agreements for the continuation of the airbase in the country....

China has growing energy interests in Iran. Last October, China signed a long-term $70 billion agreement with Tehran for a 51 percent stake in Iran’s largest onshore oilfield. At the SCO summit, Iranian vice president, Mohammad Reza Aref, declared his country could become the “bridge” that connected the SCO states to the resources of the Persian Gulf....

Alongside the economic linkage, China and Russia are strengthening their military ties. The two countries are preparing their first joint military excise, to be conducted in China, involving 80,000 troops. Russia intends to send warships, ground forces and long-range bombers. Although both sides have denied that the exercise is aimed at any country, there is little doubt that it is a response to the eruption of US aggression since 2001 and the growing uncertainties in world politics."
