Zogby- Bush Job Rating at 45%

Released: August 01, 2005

Despite Big Week for Bush, No Bounce So Far: Bush Job Rating at 45%—Virtually Unchanged from Last Month; Supreme Court Pick Roberts Favorably Viewed by Two-in-Three, New Zogby Poll Reveals

Despite a big week for the President, including passage of his energy bill, a high-profile transportation bill and the CAFTA agreement by Congress, favorable press coverage surrounding his personal commitment to fitness, and a positive public reaction to his first Supreme Court appointment, the President’s approval rating is virtually unchanged from polling conducted in late June.

(....)

The low approval rating is the continuation of a trend that began in late February and has remained constant throughout the first months of President Bush’s second term.

I think their measurements, especially on the 'handling terrorism' metric, are running a bit high (at least 2% everywhere) and amount to an overcorrecting for their bias too far against Republicans last year. But there are a lot of amusing bits of data here.

Remember that criticism levels tend to decline a bit during summers, generally, and gain 3-10% in late August and early December.

1. that's because on the big questions the war on Iraq
and the economy including sky high gasoline prices--he sucks to high heaven and that is what the American people are focusing on--even though those other "victories" are pretty bad in themselves.

3. ''Supreme Court Pick Roberts Favorably Viewed by Two-in-Three''
lol -- there's the rub.

they might not like bush -- but think it's fine and dandy that he appoints mini-me versions of himself.

4. These polls are a ridiculous waste of time
Even if Bush's poll numbers went down to 13 percent, it doesn't matter. He is in there another 3 and 1/2 years, and there's not a damn thing we can do about it. He can and will do tremendous damage, no matter what his poll numbers are.

6. Agree--
And, even if the impossible could happen and he were impeached, the incoming rapist would be as bad as the outgoing one.

5. political moderates

think that Roberts is moderate enough. Political conservatives think he's conservative enough. Quite a bit would have to happen to dispell this impression.

I think the key impression is, and imho correctly, that Roberts doesn't actually tip the balance on the Court in what people do consider crucial- though he adds more bit more weight on the one side than O'Connor did.
