There have been ads airing in Arkansas re: the "Death Tax."
Stock footage of WWII era soldiers fill the screen. The narrator praises their service. "They've served their country; they've paid their taxes."

Then comes the kicker. Shots of graves in a military cemetery. The narrator says something along these lines: "Now, they're being asked to pay once again, with the unjust Death Tax."

A WWII veteran comes on screen, asking the viewers to help fight the Death Tax. The narrator returns. "Call your Senator. Tell him/her to oppose the unjust Death Tax."

This ad is clearly designed to appeal to the patriotism and jingoism of Arkansans. At no point is it mentioned that most veterans will never be affected by the "Death Tax." At no point is it mentioned that the inheritance tax - erm... "Death Tax" - primarily affects only the upper class.

It's a shameful ad. And it could work.

Anybody else seen anything like this?

Who wouldn't be against the "Death Tax?"
And yet this kind of shit continues to go unanswered.

3. and this nation is once again, at war
Hence, you don't cut taxes in a war. Ever.

Anybody who whines about taxes being too high in wartime is an unpatriotic traitor.

6. The Minneapolis paper had several anti "death" tax letters today
What I'd like to know is how many of the people who oppose the estate tax know how large an estate has to be before it's taxed. And, of those opposed, how many have estates that large or the expectation of inheriting enough money that it would be taxed.

8. People hear "death tax" and you've lost them.
"Death tax? You mean I get taxed for dying? Well, gosh, that's just not fair!"

It's one of the more clever and deceptive rewordings the Republicans have pulled off.

14. I paid it
My aunt died with about $ 1.5 million.

When she died the limit was $ 600 k. I think now it's around $ 1.5 million.

The Democratic leadership has offered a compromise of about $ 3 to $ 5 million. That seems reasonable to me.

7. Have you seen the GOP 'talking points' on undoing the constitution
so that government cannot do income tax? That is a little scarier.

At least if people have to pay income tax - they pay it on inheritance - at some point in time they pay.

Places like Canada have no death tax. Just progressive income tax & sales tax on consumer goods if people use the mall as a passtime.
