Thank you for the info. That would be a bit of a stretch financially but I'm trying to convince my husband it is absolutely imperative that we do this. It's something I feel strongly about.

20. Hostels for as low as $23 a night... and Bus or Ride Shares going on...

The organizers know that we DEMS are being squeezed tighter than tight, so they even have scholarships (for bus rides) if people can't go and people on the DU are offering to arrange rooms for people if needed.

Or you can do like I did and show hubby the B&B prices compared to the hotels... we found one that works, but I could have gone as cheap on those as $75 if you can deal with sharing a bathroom..

Or how about a girls trip? You can get as many as 5 people in some of the B&B's and then you can all split the bill.

Would be absolutely awful if you missed this. It's bigger than Selma and it's our time to be the ones... we gotta march hand in hand down the road to the White House and tell that man to get out!

from the Detroit area together. We're still figuring out the best way to go and not have to take the bus, drive all night Friday and come back right after the rally, driving all night again. An Open Letter to the President of the United States and U.S. Congress

We, the undersigned, write this letter to express our deep disappointment and moral outrage at the passage of the $82 Billion supplemental budget for the continued war against and occupation of Iraq. We as people of faith stand firmly against this war. The best support for our troops would be to bring them back to their families. It is highly disingenuous on the part of the administration to attach the war appropriation bill to the funds for the Tsunami relief efforts and other humanitarian aid. We see this as a political ploy to secure votes and make Tsunami victims no more than political pawns. We write this letter in the light of the above to remind ourselves and others including our national leadership of the following:

First, our nation entered into the war on false pretense and fear and violated international law. Religious leaders from every faith tradition opposed the preemptive war on the people of Iraq because of half-truths, our administration's haste to make war, and the reckless abandonment of democratic processes. The facts remain clear and evidential. After over two years, there has been no discovery of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and there was no Iraqi connection to the terrorist attacks of September 11th.

Second, the continued presence of American troops in Iraq only heightens the risk to the newly formed and fragile government of Iraq. The rising insurgency in post-election Iraq is a symptom of the occupation. The over 1500 U.S. casualties and over 15,000 injured American soldiers combined with the innumerable Iraqi lives lost and destroyed continue to bring dishonor to the precious name of democracy.

How to Get Media Coverage

1. Identify what’s "newsworthy." There is a big difference
between an issue and a news story. We
can assist the media in covering issues that are

newsworthy? Controversy, anniversaries, civil disobedience,
human interest, strange bedfellows,
superlatives (first, biggest, etc.) If a topic isn’t newsworthy
- no matter how important - they probably
won’t cover it.

2. Develop written materials. The first thing a reporter
is likely to ask when you call them to pitch a
story is: "Do you have anything in writing?" Help
make their job as easy as possible by developing
brief, easy-to-read materials. Especially important
is a 1-2 page media advisory or press release with
details of an event or news story. The style and
content should resemble a simple newspaper
story, with strong headlines, facts and quotes.
When possible, other background materials can
be helpful, including fact sheets, spokespeople
bios or report summaries.

21. I have walked the same streets in ABQ

recently protesting the war, that I walked in the late 60's protesting the war in VN. I'm pretty broke now, really broke. Paid $7 as opposed to $20 an hour 3 years ago, the $7 is recent, so some debts have piled up. But, if I can manage it I will go. For short term will try to go to El Paso for Aug 24, to protest that Terrorist Bastard the U$ is harboring!

I've been down the unemployment thing recently too. So has my son. He wants to go too, but I'm still calculating what it will take to get him there and if I can swing it. His car got repoed today. Sigh.

Upper UP in Michigan has 77% unemployment rate in the tri-city area around Ironwood where he lives. Been hell. And he's got a baby on the way.

There are about 4,500 affiliated groups with ANSWER and at the bottom I put a list of those who have endorsed with United For PEACE this fall. I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history
as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our
nation.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow
we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclaimation. This
momentous decree came as a great beacon of hope to millions of
slaves, who had been seared in the flames of whithering
injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of
their captivity. But one hundered years later, the colored
America is still not free. One hundred years later, the life of
the colored American is still sadly crippled by the manacle of
segregation and the chains of discrimination.

One hundred years later, the colored American lives on a lonely
island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material
prosperity. One hundred years later, the colored American is
still languishing in the corners of American society and finds
himself an exile in his own land So we have come here today to
dramatize a shameful condition.

In a sense we have come to our Nation's Capital to cash a check.
When the architects of our great republic wrote the magnificent
words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence,
they were signing a promissory note to which every Anerican was
to fall heir.

This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as
white men, would be guaranteed to the inalienable rights of life
liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory
note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of
honoring this sacred obligation, America has given its colored
people a bad check, a check that has come back marked
"insufficient funds."

But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt.
We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the
great vaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come to
cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches
of freedom and security of justice.

We have also come to his hallowed spot to remind America of the
fierce urgency of Now. This is not time to engage in the luxury
of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism.

Now is the time to make real the promise of democracy.

Now it the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of
segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice.

Now it the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial
injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.

Now is the time to make justice a reality to all of God's
children.

It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the
moment and to underestimate the determination of it's colored
citizens. This sweltering summer of the colored people's
legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an
invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen
sixty-three is not an end but a beginning. Those who hope that
the colored Americans needed to blow off steam and will now be
content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to
business as usual.

There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the
colored citizen is granted his citizenship rights. The
whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of
our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.

We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the
fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the
highways and the hotels of the cities.

We cannot be satisfied as long as the colored person's basic
mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one.

We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of
their selfhood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating "for
white only."

We cannot be satisfied as long as a colored person in Mississippi
cannot vote and a colored person in New York believes he has
nothing for which to vote.

No, no we are not satisfied and we will not be satisfied until
justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty
stream.

I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of your
trials and tribulations. Some of you have come from areas where
your quest for freedom left you battered by storms of
persecutions and staggered by the winds of police brutality.

You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to
work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.

Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South
Carolina go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the
slums and ghettos of our modern cities, knowing that somehow this
situation can and will be changed.

Let us not wallow in the valley of dispair. I say to you, my
friends, we have the difficulties of today and tommorrow.

I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the
American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out
the true meaning of its creed. We hold these truths to be
self-evident that all men are created equal.

I have a dream that one day out in the red hills of Georgia the
sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be
able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a
state sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed
into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in
a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin
but by their character.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day down in Alabama, with its vicious
racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the
words of interpostion and nullification; that one day right down
in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join
hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and
brothers.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be engulfed,
every hill shall be exalted and every mountain shall be made low,
the rough places will be made plains and the crooked places will
be made straight and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and
all flesh shall see it together.

This is our hope. This is the faith that I will go back to the
South with. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the
mountain of despair a stone of hope.

With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling
discords of our nation into a beautiful symphomy of brotherhood.

With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray
together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to climb
up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to
sing with new meaning "My country 'tis of thee, sweet land of
liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my father's died, land of
the Pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring!"

And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.
So let freedom ring from the hilltops of New Hampshire. Let
freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York.

Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of
Pennsylvania.

Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado.

Let freedom ring from the curvacious slopes of California.

But not only that, let freedom, ring from Stone Mountain of
Georgia.

Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi and
every mountainside.

When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every
tenement and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we
will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children,
black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and
Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of
the old spiritual, "Free at last, free at last. Thank God
Almighty, we are free at last."

72. Lynne, How about a DU Candlelight Vigil somewhere on Saturday?

Maybe we can could say, bring blue candles as BIG and Blue as we dare... maybe 3" pillars and that way if we go out together or are out in the crowd that night we will be able to spot each other and gravitate toward each other even outside in case some people don't get to the meet-up in time.

I have a co-worker who lived in Virginia and I will ask how late it is safe under these conditions to be out --- there was that great shot of the candlelight vigil by the Washington Monument... I wonder if we could gather where the Martin Luther King Monument is being constructed and fill that place up and get a picture of that.

76. Tonight, BTW, I went to a Town Hall Meeting with a Republican Hosting.

I think there are those, like Jim Ramstad here in MN, who see the writing on the wall, but are having problems keeping up with the depth of the corruption in their party because they are working for their voter base and don't have time to catch all the slippery stuff the wing-nuts are putting in the bills the Republicans are voting for.

Now, before you get upset with me for "siding" with the opposition... listen to how things went.

Tuesday, I drove up to Brooklyn Park to listen to him. I was too mad to really address what he was talking about and I'd prepared things to say that would have ripped him a new you know what. I'm glad I waited until tonight in Edina to address him. I was able to get in a lot of my points and got heard by about 100 or more people who were packed into and flowing out of the City Hall Council Chambers.

He took a lot of heat and all he asked for was for people to be civil and let him talk too.

They blasted him on corporate welfare - 60% of corporations fully avoiding paying taxes and getting money back. He was against the companies that use the Bahamas to avoid paying taxes, but didn't want to over tax companies and slow economic growth.

They blasted him on the cost of the war - that happened at the end and it was the only thing that got him snarky, Ramstad started talking about us not being supportive of the troops, but the guy who brought it up was yelling a bit, so I don't blame him.

I did shout out, but didn't get a full count, "How many people here support our soldiers, but not the war?"

There is something about a politican who will stand up and listen to the voices of dissent without putting them down and yet still bringing his point out.. you know it FELT like DEMOCRACY in that room tonight.

Still, had to hold his feet to the fire on several issues:

#1 CAFTA - He got booed when he brought it up, but my points were about the crap that gets sneaked into these bills and how they usually destroy the good the bills do.... My point was about the provision for countries like Nicaragura having to give up access to generic drugs in exchange for trade with us... and it was great because one of this Republican's points of applause was his support of allowing US citizens better access to affordable medication.

I said, "The USofA can't afford those prices... how is a little country like Nicaragura supposed to? How many people will die because they can't get access to life saving medication before it's admitted that this is a mistake?"

Then I asked about the provisions that had been stuffed into the Energy Bill - $100,000 deduction for Hummers and SUV gas hogs vs a puny $2,000 credit for Hybrids.

... and then my biggie... "Why did they loosen the sanctions on EXPORTING Weapons Grade Uranium with this Energy Bill? How COULD THEY? We are at WAR because of the thought that someone might have sold Sadaam some yellowcake, but we are easing up restrictions on EXPORTING Weapons Grade Uranium. How is that supposed to make me feel more safe? And why aren't we putting money into First Responders and securing OUR Ports? I'm MUCH MORE Concerned about that potential problem than the immigrants that die of thirst trying to get into the country taking jobs."

He didn't really have an answer, but I could see he was thinking, "Shit, I didn't know this," and so I asked him to help OUT the people putting this stuff into the bills. He said if we could get him solid information he would track it down.

He came off as someone who cares about his constituents and said his voting record is getting him in more trouble with his party than with his DEM counterparts accross the isle.

He was appalled at the Supreme Court decision that took private property away from people here in MN and gave it away for "public interest" (read public greed) and he worked with DEMS to draft a bill that will try to reverse that decision. I intend to support him on that.

He is still trying to get Wellstone's bill through for Health Equity in Mental Health and Chemical Dependency issues. So that these issues don't have artificial roadblocks built in that deny people care.

He fought against his own party to get better funding for schools and isn't buying the non-funding of the no-child-left-behind mandate.

Some people tease him to come on over to the light side, but someone else seriously said, "No, I'd rather have you in the Republican party working to fix it." I agree.

All in all I had to commend him for having the gonads to face us and I DID SAY "GONADS" on public access TV....

I also told him it wasn't that we had anything against him personally, but that we are frustrated because we can't get in touch with and administration that is so out of touch with us.

A lot of people came up and talked to me afterward and I pushed for Sept 24 - even if people just get out locally.

That's where change can happen - face to face, locally, by educating folks to the truths behind their lies. It would be easier if they'd believe us when we say that for bushco, up-is-down and war-is-peace and last throes-is-we're losing. People have a lot of different reasons to despise Bush & Co. People have different priorities. But they have a lot more in common than not. What could be better than bringing a ton of different people together to protest?

I went to a couple marches in DC to protest the Iraq war before it started. Yeah, there were people with their own agendas, petitions to legalize pot or passing out socialist party newspapers or whatever - but there were also Catholic nuns marching alongside Anarchists chanting against the war. Accountants and high school kids and veterans and Republicans and...

Frankly it was one of the most beautiful things I have seen in my life. If you want to talk yourself out of going for a reason like that, then it is your loss. I hope that doesn't sound disrespectful - I don't mean it that way. It's hard to convey with a keyboard sometimes.

What do you all think? I live in Front Royal, VA, about an hour and a half from DC, but you can get on Metro in Vienna which is only an hour from here.

Plua, there's lots of camping out here cheap. We're in the Shenandoah Mountains, with a National Forest on the other end. Motels out here are cheap too. Buses can be rented to get everyone to Metro and back.

What about shutting down DC with a general strike for at least two days, with the cooperation of the DC community so we are not outside interlopers. We need something more than just another demo. We've had many & we got Reagan & 2 Bushes. Just marching does not work. We can call for this Administration to step down forthwith!

Vietnam War demos did not end that war, at least their impact was questionable. They also got Nixon elected. The US military fell apart in Vietnam & that's why Nixon cut & run. We need new ideas, IMO.
