Lance Armstrong. Texas Governor?
Any rumors on whether Lance is seriously considering a run for governor in Texas, and whether he could run as a Democrat?

1. There's an article I found online.
Edited on Tue Aug-02-05 07:36 PM by Rufus T. Firefly
It referred to him as a "liberal-Schwarzenegger Republican." Which is probably the best thing we can get in Texas.

http://www.centristcoalition.com/blog/archives/002310.html

And I saw this at dailyKos:

"...as he has described himself in the past as being "middle to left," "against mixing up State and Church," "not keen on guns," opposed to the Iraq War, and pro-choice."

6. So far all I've heard is rumors

 It would be interesting. Hey at least they can have someone who can ride a bike. LOL. Didn't he and Sheryl Crow support Kerry? I know Sheryl did and she performed at Kerry's election night party.

15. And the God botherers
hate him. He won't acknowledge that anything but medical science and his own force of will got him through the cancer.
According to people who I know who have worked with him, he's a self absorbed prick, but he's a genius on a bicycle.

2. I recall that he said he is not interested in running for TX gov
in the next election (but did not rule out a run sometime after that). I would guess that Lance leans dem, but I could be wrong.

3. That's just STUPID
get you head out of high school---this is not a happy-elect the homecoming king kind of thing---

Lets elect someone who will do the state some good, and take care of somme of the BS and sky high taxes we are dealing with rather than a guy that can ride his bike fast.

I'm disgusted with this notion that celebrities should be big politicians. They usually don't know squat about the lives that "real" people live.

Texas governor is mostly a figurehead, but at least it should be someone who can understand the people. Lance Armstrong? Let him do product endorsements.

9. You know better than that.
A liberal/Democrat won't win Texas anytime soon. I just mean that if it has to be a Republican, I'll take a moderate-lefty over another Perry or Bush.

13. Head Is Right Where It Should Be
In Texas politics, I think Lance has to run Democrat. As a Republican, he couldn't get elected without paying homage to the fundies.

The question is whether he has political charisma. He has a good start with excellent name recognition and (surely) good favorables. The downside is Sheryl Crow is his girlfriend. And he would probably get wiped out by the GOP machine. But he might inspire some Texans, unlike our last candidate.

And although Kinky Friedman will be entertaining, there is no way I'll support him.

10. He's said he's center, left of center in his politics.
Against the Iraq War, pro-choice, pro separation of church and state. I assume he'd run as a Dem (if he did run).

11. The thought of an Armstrong/Friedman gubernatorial debate ...
... makes me smile, I have to say.

Probably a lot more watchable than anything featuring Bush.

12. Kinky Friedman has run before..
In the 80's he ran on a platform of keeping Kerrville and Fredricksburg out of a war.:smoke:
