Edited on Tue Aug-02-05 08:09 PM by FreedomAngel82
it's already a massive victory. This race shouldn't have been nowhere this close. If Paul Hackett can get within fifteen percentage points of Schmidt it'd be an indication that the American people are sick of the republican party talking points. It's still way too close to call. Malloy will also probably be following this Sam says. Just a moment talking to Mark of the DailyKos. His site was the one that raised the awareness of this race.

Edited on Tue Aug-02-05 08:10 PM by Zodiak Ironfist
No matter what, this is a victory....a BIG victory.

Now if we actually get the seat, than that says a few things to me.

1. Fighters and liberals can win even in red disctricts as long as they act like themselves. The Repub media machine is no longer believed.

2. Ohioans are sick and tired of Republican corruption....'bout time.

3. They can't rig any and all elections...small elections can be watched much easier. OR Congressional seats aren't important enough to rig.

4. We have a media machine that is beginning to work (blogs, AAR).

5. War heroes the likes of Wes Clark may have tremendous appeal throughout the South and the Republicans have lost the flag they wrap themselves in.

(reposted from the end fo thread #3...didn't beat the buzzer)

35. Let's face it -- he's already won...
The Ohio 2nd CD hasn't seen an election this close in nearly twenty years. This campaign has been a referendum on the Bush Administration -- being held in one of the most Republican-friendly congressional districts in the country. The fact that Hackett hasn't been blown out of the water right now is great news. A victory will have Karl Rove crapping his pants -- it would mark the official beginning of Bush's status as a lame duck.

From Blackwell's official website:

2005 Special Congressional Election

Special Election Results (reported by the Hamilton County Board of Elections - by clicking here you will be taken to their Web site)

http://www.hamilton-co.org/boe/

Unfortunately that official website is down... I wonder if they will be sending a technician to fix it.

51. gut-wrenching 50 point shift?
This is a Democratic avalanche in the land that spawned Rush Limbaugh.

The win is a squeaker, though.....I can't even believe it is a possibility!! So much for my pessimism and my "never underestimate your enemy" strategy.

We really have a chance in this country to change it all. If Paul wins, I'll be proud to be an American for the first time in nearly ten years.

36. This is a huge victory, no matter what happens.
As has been mentioned earlier, no Democrat has broken 35% in this district since the Reagan administration.

This is a very red part of the country we're talking about here. The fact that someone like Hackett, who is not only pro-choice, pro-gay-rights, and pro-environment, but has the audacity to call George W. Bush a chickenhawk and an SOB on national news, can hold his own against any Republican, is an enormous upset whether he goes over 50% or not.

Not only is this evidence of America's distaste for *, but it's proof that our ideal for Democratic politics - commitment to progressive values, reasoned arguments, and good ol' fashioned guts - can get results. And that's the message we have to get out, even if he doesn't win.

68. If Hackett wins...
I will never listen to anyone telling that a liberal can't win ever again. It is time to put that "political knowledge according to CNN" to rest for good.

The worst thing the Republicans could have done is what they have done for the last 5 years with the corruption and the power grabs. They had won by putting us to sleep for so long, and if they kept their corruption at a low level, they would continue to succeed. They woke the sleeping liberal giant and conditioned him for the battle by making him endure ridicule and self-doubt for over 20 years. Now he is pissed, has a club, and is ready to stomp some GOP ass with hardened resolve.

50. Last thread locked right after I posted this
Just so you know, here's what district 2 is like...

Part of Hamilton co. & part of Warren co. are urban sprawl from Cincinnati and you might as well add a chunk of Clermont co. too, lots of republican voters.

Brown, Adams and Pike are more rural, more likely to vote for hackett but fewer voters.

On the bright side, I heard today that a lot of urban republicans decided to stay away from the polls today simply because they couldn't bring themselves to vote for either canidate.

BTW if you're wondering about turnout because of other issues on the ballots, the school levies are not necessarily in district 2, my school district had a levy vote today and I am not in district 2.

policies and his energy for walking the talk then they will change their tune

(you thought might say something else didnt you)

but the fact that they arent showing up just to vote against him is a good sign i think for such a conservative area

ideally all voters should vote but sometimes it doesnt work out that way

It's a measure of the party's organization that it can distribute requests for absentee ballots and get them back in time. The Democratic Party has very little infrastructure in the rural areas -- the Republicans are far more organized. Let's see who shows up today.

60. Claremont and Hamilton - Time to pray
Both represent 68% of the district voters -- these are supposedly Schmidt's strongest. We need to hope for a LOW Schmidt turnout and a VERY HIGH Hackett turn out.

Pray and cross your fingers. This is it!!

MyDD has just offered a promising analysis
laddy says: "Adams- 64-36 - 50 (7 points over)
Brown- 64-36 - 50 (7 points over)
Clermont- 71-29 - 43 (4 points short)*
Hamilton- 70-30 - 52 (3 points short)*
Pike-52-48 - 62 (1 point short)*
Scioto- 52-48 - 62 (4 Points over)
Warren- 72-28 - 42 (3 points over)

***I'm assuming when they are saying "Short" it means with Kerry's numbers, it's promsiing at this point if we are shorter than Kerry because all precincts have not even come CLOSE to reporting yet......And if Democratic/sane turnout was high, this might be good.

61. Anyone have info about the makeup of the precincts reporting?
Are we waiting for more Democratic precincts to come in or more Republican precincts?

My experience has been that the Democratic precincts tend to come in later, but maybe that's a Southern thing.

87. Are there any urban areas in this district - they always come in late
But the breakdown on this site looks good:
http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050802/NEWS01/308020015/0/CINCI

Hamilton is going to be the deciding factor and that looks like part of Cincinnati. If it's the suburbs it's going to be tough but if they have part of the city included in that district I think he can win this
