14. Wow! Check out this comment:
A freeper's comment:

To: A CA Guy
Granted the turnout was low, and the GOP took this one for granted until the tracking polls came in a few days ago, and they panicked, and did a money dump, but Hackett sliced into the GOP base like a sharp knife into butter. The swing was particularly ugly outside the Cincinnati metro area. There it was a total disaster. Those folks like war veterans who are unhappy wiht the Bush act regarding it, is my assumption. It was an emotional thing. There, at least a third of the Bush vote exited.
The Dems have every right to crow about this one. This CD is one of the most reliably GOP in the nation, particularly since it takes in rich GOP Cincinatti suburbs, and hyper GOP exurbs (who tend not to swing much), along with rural GOP counties, and marginal to mildly Dem Scioto and Pike counties. But the counties outside the metro area count for only about 20-25% of the district I would guess.

20. I was surprised
to see his webcast commercial, which apparently played on Ohio TV. On his website he is exactly my cup of tea...in the ad, I was pretty confused as it started out with Bush front and center, as if he was running as a repub...actually he doesn't mention he's a democratic candidate.

I guess it's smart politiking to confuse the voter...I would have thought better of him. His website and slogan made him sound like someone proud of who he was and everything he'd done. I really liked the sound of him from his website....that said, I was sorely dissapointed by his tv ad. Is that really what we have to do to win now? Best of luck to him anyway.

122. They have optical scan ballots. (Clermont)
You bubble in your choice with a pencil and ballots are read by a machine. Kind of like a scantron. So you do have the paper ballots.

In November there was a big flap about some ballots had labels pasted over the names of the candidates. I don't know what ever happened with that.

Those hand vote counts can be manipulated outside the view of poll watchers. All you have to do is just misplace a few ballot boxes that might have gone against Schmidt.

Why Fix this county?

Come on...THis county is a far-right wing county and after the votes in this county are in this will be a several thousand vote win...NOT because of any machines, but because this last district was the one Jesus himself couldn't win if he ran on a Democratic ticket.

Hackett was amazign in this election...Our focus should be to learn what he did and take it to more moderate areas....But Clermont is a guarantee loss and the Repukes don't need to fix machines for it either.

61. Hey....this "humidity" excuse could catch on.
Maybe when Dubya gets back from his excellent Crawford adventure, he can make a big prime time announcement:

No WMDs in Iraq because of humidity.
They hate us for our humidity.
I was AWOL because of humidity.

The possibilities are endless.

before claiming the fix is in? This is REALLY close. Take a breath. I'm afraid every election from now on will be an honest election, if we win, and a crooked one, if we don't. Crying foul on every ball diminishes the impact of the homers.

114. The Spin on this should be fun to watch

They really got trounced tonight, even if they "win" the race
(heavy republican district turned 50/50 white knuckle ride).

Added bonus -

There will be a recount. They will then have to justify THE EQUIPMENT that WE may be able to prove is not adequate for an accurate recount.
Think of that bonus opportunity.

They say in the article that Hackett is getting 30,000 votes less than Sanders did in 2004 so apparently lots of Dems stayed home.

They don't even mention that Schmitt is getting about 180,000 less than Portman's total!

What a slanted article. OHMYGOD!
