20. Doubt it.
This district has a 30% republican edge. If it was rigged, they rigged it in reverse.

24. I disagree, a loss is a loss
They will insure that the voting machines do not make it so close next time. Hackett was up against a liar, and an unethical person, who supports this criminal raping of our country

Republicans are destroying this country

This is very telling about Cinci if Paul really did loose. It tells me that these are Rethugs who just want to get a Repug in office.

13. That's a 20-point swing to the Democrats since 2004
That district went Republican 72%-28% in 2004. This is BIG.

30. Sure, but...
that's one of the most Republican districts in the country. The Democrats haven't held that seat since 1980. If they stole it they didn't do a very good job. This is hugely embarrassing for the Republicans. A Democrat shouldn't have gotten more than 30% in that district.

34. Embarrasing? Yeah, right - Schmidt WON the election
The only way Republicans get embarrassed is when they lose. We've had so many close elections in Texas that ultimately went Rethug that it isn't even funny anymore.

35. I don't see why
we should be expected to be able to win every single election in the country. The fact that Hackett got this close is a huge deal. There was a huge ebb in voter support for the Republicans in tonight, and it doesn't get much more Republican than this district. If even half of this swing can be repeated across the board in 2006, Congress is turning blue.

37. When an Iraqi war veteran cannot beat a party-line soulless freak...
...there's something fundamentally wrong with the Democratic Party. We are hemorrhaging something fierce, and we need to do something now to stop the bleeding if we want any hope of turning the Senate purple in 2006.

Having said that, Paul Hackett fought hard and fought well. I hope this isn't the last we've heard from him.

28. Report from Swing State Project
UPDATE (Tim): It's over. Paul lost by about 4000 votes--he got 48.2% of the vote at the end of the night. We didn't take the seat, but holy shit was this a win for the 50 state strategy, the netroots, and the future of the country--the grassroots of the Democratic Party.

We have sent a powerful message for 2006 tonight, and over the past several weeks. Close the book on round one, an overwhelming victory of us.

and stealing votes. There is a vote march in Atlanta, GA this saturday. I will be there marching in it.

22. Wow.
Just wow. Hackett was a great candidate, and he got the debate going. I hear his district would be a tough one to win, so for him to come close is a good step in the right direction (no pun intended.)

I don't think he'll go away. Hopefully he'll keep talking, and keep the debate going. Go Paul, go :)

32. Look, he kicked major ass here.
He gave the Repugs a hell of a fight and a hell of a fright. What he did was amazing and no one can take that accomplishment away from him. We cannot look at this as a defeat--only a beginning. And as a fine example of what we can do and how we can do it better next time.
