Schmidt Wins Tight Race

By Howard Wilkinson
Enquirer staff writer

In a race that had been the focus of national attention, Republican Jean Schmidt beat Democrat Paul Hackett for the 2nd Congressional District seat

<snip>

After all six other counties in the district had completed their ballot counts in what was a low-turnout election, Schmidt’s home county, Clermont, had reported a little more than half of its precincts.
“I have no idea what is going on over there,’’ said Hamilton County Board of Elections chairman Tim Burke. “I don’t know what their problem is."

2. here's their excuse
The Board of Elections in Clermont County, east of Cincinnati, says it's optical scanners haven't counted all the ballots yet because it was so hot -- and humid -- Tuesday.

Board member Tim Rudd says the ballots pick up moisture when it gets hot, making it tougher for the optical scan machines to sort and count.

The race in the Second District is neck-and-neck tonight. Republican Jean Schmidt leads Democrat Paul Hackett by fewer than one-thousand votes with 88 percent of precincts reporting.
