Evolution should be taught in Sunday Schools
If the religiously insane base of the republican party (along with nazis and klansmen) want tax dollars to be used to foist their beliefs on school children in public schools, then their churches should be used to teach their children the true origin of species. If they oppose this idea then churches should give up their tax exempt status so they can be free to teach whatever the hell they want in the privacy of their klaverns. Its really quite simple.

I think its about time we take a serious look at the tax exempt status of political machines (some call them churches.)

1. That's the best answer yet! ID in schools? Evolution in the Church!
:yourock:

and I also agree its time to stip any religous institution of Tax-exempt status. They aren't neutral players

3. They should also teach full sex ed in schools ...
if you teach abstinence only, how can they get "all sides" of the issue?

4. Christians have a hard time suppressing hormones
So their little nazi children pledge that they will remain virgins until marriage, then engage in oral and anal sex and feel awfully christ like when they tell mommy and daddy and their preacher that they have remained true to their pledge not to have sex.

However, I would support any effort by christian fascists in America today to insist that all of their members practice abstinence all the time, before and after marriage.

7. Thats a great one to use too
If they say ID should be taught to show all sides of the debate, they should have to teach all sides of sex ed. Great way of pointing out the hypocrisy!

5. Good suggestion and when they come back with ...
"But, Sunday School isn't about teaching science -- it's about teaching religion", we can say, "Yeah, and schools are about teaching science and not religion!" Bwhahahaaa! Oh, what I wouldn't give to have a conversation like that. :)

9. How about teaching history?
Since almost everything in the Old Testament showed up elsewhere hundreds of years if not millennia earlier -- for example, the flood story, which is in much older Sumerian texts.

The same stories were told over and over and over, and the Bible was the most recent retelling.

11. Nice set of straw men. Do you get case pricing on them?
No one in this thread suggested any of those things.

All I saw suggested here was the idea that if churches will compel my child, by law, to listen to this ID nonsense, then we should be free to come into their church by the same rights.

If you don't want us in your chuch explaining why ID is not science, then don't come into the public schools and try to tell us it is.

You are free to believe in ID and any other particular religious world view you choose. This is America. You should not be free to compel other's by law to share your view. That is also America.

P.S.--I am unchurched, after the Catholic bishop of Fargo made a big deal out of supporting the Homophobia Amendment, which was a simple ploy to turn out GOP voters. It was the third strike (having all the parochial school children make bumper stickers with crayon for the GOP House candidate and sticking them up all over the school, and putting Bush's picture up in all the classrooms a few days after the 2000 election, before it was decided were the prior offenses. I believe that, based on these activities alone, the Fargo Diocese should lose it's tax exemption).

But they's lost my heart and mind and long time ago. They just had my body for the same reason your wife's church has yours.

I think it's fair for BOSSHOG or myself to compare organized religions that have drunk the right wing kool aid to the Klan. If you don't like the comparison, then find a church that doesn't invite the comparison, or get used to it.

14. Thanks Markus
I did not see the deleted message but I can imagine. I have no problem whatsoever comparing red state christian churches to the klan. Neither does the Southern Poverty Law Center.

http://americablog.blogspot.com/2005/06/mwaaaaaaa-mommy-civil-rights-group.html

The Catholic Priest in this small Mississippi town politicizes way too much from the pulpit. I'm no longer a parishoner. My tithing now goes to the ACLU.

Today's christian conservatives are domestic enemies of the constitution, pure and simple.

Nuff said.
