I confess I awoke disappointed.
It's my emotional nature, not to mention my competitive one, in conflict with my rationalism. I do realize there is much to celebrate today. Had the special election occurred in my congressional district a 4 point loss by a Democrat would also be a huge step forward. However, the optimist in me couldn't help but imagine a Hackett win.

The emotional roller coaster I experienced while watching the returns was entirely too reminiscent of November 2, 2004. Up, down, up, down, up....silence....down.

I understand that the election process in OH-2 could very well have been completely honest and fair. I suspect election watchers covered the polls like wallpaper on my grandmother's kitchen walls--at least six layers deep.

But I also think this is a great opportunity for those involved in the process to prove it was fair. A highly public audit conducted in a odd-cycle year in a single congressional district would be a very important test for our democracy. Particularly when irregularities were reported. Every single one should be investigated with utmost sincerity.

Honestly I think I'd be a tad bit disappointed if Hackett had won by only four points. It would still indicate that 48% of the voters were willing to swallow the venom and bile oozing from the Republicans and Jean's campaign in particular. I have higher expectations for Americans that that.

So yes, I'm glad a red district went a shade of purple yesterday...but the makeup of our congress remains the same. I'm comfortable with my disappointment as it will keep me focused on the battles to come.

1. Very well said ~ Thorough auditing and taking testimony from witnesses
to election fraud in this race are a must.

I hope there were witnesses to direct, hands-on vote count distortion and pray they step forward.

2. Can't help but wonder if the Repubs would have called for a re-count
if Paul Hackett had won and if he had been caught, like Schmidt, hanging around outside polling booths handing out freebies.

3. I have no doubt.
Look at Washington State. What's good for the goose is obviously unacceptable for the gander.
