Bush's Curious Choice of Words In Introducing Bolton ...
"This post is too important to leave vacant any longer, especially during a war."

-- President Bush, in announcing recess appointment of John Bolton, Aug. 1

***

It's a curious choice of words, given that the administration last week began using the phrase "global struggle against violent extremism" -- forming the Orwellian (or possibly Christian fundamentalist) acronym Global SAVE -- instead of "war on terror."

So, did Bush mis-speak, or is this finally an acknowledgement that the Iraq War, and the effort therein to squash the insurgency, has little or nothing to do with the greater fight against terrorism? Because you know, the president has had problems making that distinction in the past.

If Bush truly is trying to distinguish one from the other, that can only be perceived as "good news" by administration critics.

15. Don't worry
Karen Hughes and Karl will figure out how to evolve it from "Global" to "World" any day now.

4. It is a curious choice of words - considering the WH is vacant this
month during a time of war.

7. That is interesting...
It has been a recent thing that they wanted to reBRAND the "war'.

They put so much effort into their spin - it would be difficult to believe it is NOT intentional.

10. it blows his self-annointed 'War President' label - what's he supposed
to call himself now? He needs violent words, big powerful, bold, manly words to bolster his puny ego. Otherwise, how else can he puff himself up?

13. I"ll bet they had focus groups...
They need the Christian Right's support. Maybe the "war" thing wasn't working so well. (Other Christian groups oppose the war - it makes them look bad). But "Save the World" - well that's something they could get behind. Makes them feel all self-righteous and all.

16. ya,. save the world - depicts 'someone' as being the savior AND
shedding 'war' from the frame (hopefully on their part) eliminates it morphing into a religious 'war' - against Islam

17. It doesn't sound quite as urgent to say "during a struggle ..".
... and thus is harder to justify using a recess appointment for Bolton.

18. He means the Iran War
That Bolton needs to get working on before Bush is out of power. It's their whole raison d'etre. I swear to Christ..they are insane with ideolgy and power and it's worse than oil or greed..they think they are going to REMAKE the world..please everyone let's not let them think they can.

Though I don't know what crediblity the US or Bolton could possibly have with the UN. His goal numero uno is in Bush speak to reform the UN. What he really means is destroy it so they can do whatever they want with the planet.

19. from the daily howler (update)
GLOBAL WARRING: Apparently, George Bush didn’t want to go in the books as a “global struggle against violent extremism president.” Yesterday, he dialed the lingo back to “war on terror.” Richard Stevenson reports the change in the Times. But then, the change in framing was so pronounced that even Brit Hume reported it:

HUME (8/3/05):Welcome to Washington. I'm Brit Hume. President Bush today put an end to an apparent effort within his administration to recast his war on terror as something else, although there have been a few public glimpses of the linguistic debate. Fox News has learned more about what went on behind the scenes. Fox News chief White House correspondent Carl Cameron has the story.
