Paul Hackett Thanks DFA for Support and launches a new bat
A Victory for Democracy

Yesterday, one of the reddest regions in America turned a whole lot bluer.

I ran in a special election to serve in the United States House of Representatives for the 2nd District of Ohio. I am a Marine recently returned from Iraq, a husband, a father, an attorney, and a Democrat.

When I won the Democratic primary for this contest, few people believed we had a shot at victory. But DFA put its faith in me—and went to work organizing on the ground and online. Your support helped build the greatest Democratic get-out-the-vote effort this district has ever known.

While we didn't pull out a victory yesterday—we came incredibly close. We got 48 percent of the vote. And in those results rests hope for the future.

It had been 15 years since a Democratic candidate for Congress received more than 30 percent of the vote in Ohio's 2nd District and 40 years since a Democrat held the seat. Your support helped me improve Democratic performance by nearly 20 percent. This is a victory for democracy. And if we can do this in Ohio—we can do it anywhere.

Join me, and help DFA elect Democrats in Ohio and across the country:

www.democracyforamerica.com/bat

We have the power to win back Congress. Yesterday proved it. And DFA is on the front lines of the fight—determined, hopeful and fearless.

I believe we can change this country. I believe we can win in every state—and I know that you do too. Please join me today:

www.democracyforamerica.com/bat

Thank you,

Paul Hackett

We could start a thread in the Ohio forum and maybe start a drafthackett website, although I have not the slightest clue on how to make a website

12. Thanks

Howard Dean has done a helluva lot to endear himself to me by the way he's handled not getting the nomination to the White House. Dude is working hard to save this nation and god bless him for that.

Maybe the Republicans didn't want Dean afterall...I remember some Repuke hack laughing and saying, "heh heh heh...Dean is who we want, we'd easily beat him"...

Maybe that was a bluff. Maybe they knew a Dean run would have been very ugly for the Bushistas. Dean may have been able to call a spade a spade and take no prisoners.

I was NOT a Dean fan at the time, but I have come to really REALLY love what this guy is doing for us. He is a fighter...and goodness knows we need that these days.

Dean has moved way up my list....And the Hackett performance shows that Dean and his like have quite a bit to offer this nation. In defeat there burns a bright cinder of hope....

9. sounds like a great guy, and....
is it just me, or does it seem diebold can only cheat with the same numbers?
Am I the only that finds "48%" a little too familiar?

29. Nope your not the only one
I called this election Rep 51% to Dem 49%. I guess they thought that was too obvious again so they skipped a number. Everything about this election smelled fishy again, but if anything it got a better movement rising and if that's all we get, we'll win with just that.

15. Tons of the blog posts are "guest writers"
including Senators, campaign staff and even heads of local DFA orgs.

Candidates, especially, may be restricted in order to comply with campaign finance regs.

16. If it's some regulation isue, I'm sympathetic.
If not (and I don't suspect it is) WHY didn't some DFA intern make sure Hackett got an account? It's not rocket science...the Congressional candidates you're supporting shouldn't have to log on using "guest" accounts.

It just looks cheap and disorganized.

17. Only staff posts at the blog itself. Comments section is for others.
Many of us send things to the staff in Burlington, and so do people like Leahy who posted the other day. That is just the setup.

At Kos, I can not just decide to post on the front page. I would have to be designated or my post picked to be put there.

I am so sorry you got up on the wrong side of the bed. DFA is very much about organizing at the ground level, and the website is just an organizing tool. It is not fancy, but it is quite adequate for what is needed.

18. So I can't appear as a registered user rather than "guest" if I post?
More importantly, admins couldn't get Hackett a userid before the election was over?

I didn't "get up on the wrong side of the bed". I'm just constantly appalled by the LITTLE mistakes we make that make thinks look shoddy.

Again, if it's some unavoidable tech issue, I'm completely wrong and I deserve to be shot.

19. I tell you what. Go to any blog and try to get front page.
Go ahead, make my day. Get on Kos front page, or others.

You seem to have a confused notion of what the blog is and what comments section is, etc.

20. If I was a U.S. Congressional candidate, I'd expect the admins to contact
ME.

That's the gist of my argument. How did the candidate with the most buzz (maybe in the nation) among Democrats not get an invite to post on an influential, well-respected blog?

When a candidate for national office has to post on a HUGE blog under "guest" it looks bad. That's all I'm saying.

21. maybe mr. hackett is just
displying some common courtesy and respect towards the blog and its other posters, like most newbies do.

he may as well change to'R' if he expects, demands or doesnt think the rules apply to him.

hopefully he will be offered a larger arena.

25. That's entirely possible.
It's also possible that an invitation was extended but, in the chaos of the election, it was overlooked by the Hackett campaign. I've stated that if either of these scenarios are the case, my comments should be disregarded (and, I believe I offered to be executed).

I'm going to assume for a moment that neither of those situations applied.

My contention is that it tends to make Democrats look disorganized when their largest websites (blogs included) have a CANDIDATE such as Hackett posting as a guest. It's less a criticism than a call for some information sharing and unity.

26. When Howard Dean himself has posted at BFA he has been a guest blogger
That's just the way Blog For America is. If this is a huge problem for you it may be a sign of deeper issues.

27. I'd suggest that that's a sign of issues with the site, not me, but
thanks for the advice.

Why is it that when I suggest that a Democratic national candidate having to post as "guest" at a nationally-recognized Democratic website instead of being afforded some preferential status I have "deeper issues"?

I must just be getting too old for this game...
