IT WAS AN HONOR----Reflections on trekking to OH for the Hackett campaign
Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 12:21 AM by blue neen
What an amazing experience.

I made the trip from Pittsburgh to SW Ohio on Sunday and returned home today. Every second of working on the Hackett campaign was worthwhile.

The turnout of volunteers was incredible. I met people from Seattle, Boston, Chicago, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Connecticut, and the District of Columbia. This corps of campaign workers flew, drove, did whatever they had to do to travel to OH-02, all on their own dime. What they accomplished, along with Hackett's very inspired own staff was remarkable. This was the greatest Democratic get-out-the vote effort ever in that district!

Paul Hackett is the real deal, folks. He's intelligent, independent-minded, witty, and courageous. He's a born leader and has personality to boot. He speaks the plain truth, not false rhetoric. He called George Bush a "chickenhawk" and didn't back down. That kind of tenacity bodes well for his bright future.

Young and old, male and female, black and white--they were all there, working together for a common cause, working for someone who they felt would represent them. This campaign seemed to be a catalyst for the middle Americans who are saying, "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore." It showed in the numbers of votes Paul received in a district where registered Republicans outnumber Democrats by a more than 3 to 1 margin.

Vietnam Veterans were calling the campaign headquarters to find out where their polling places were. Two elderly ladies in very fragile health offered to stand at the polls and hand out literature in 97 degree heat (They were thanked profusely and gently turned down.)

A gentleman called on election eve from Virginia. He said to me, "I just donated $500 to the campaign. I'm a Vietnam Vet, and I'M ALSO A REPUBLICAN." Is there anything else I can do to help? I'm sick of this administration smearing and sliming veterans. I'm disgusted that George Bush lied us into a war with Iraq." It was heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time.

The number of young people working on the Hackett campaign was pleasantly surprising. They were talented, smart, and inspired. They were composed and excited, patient and driven, all at the same time. I felt that I was surrounded by America's best and brightest. They gave me hope for our future.

Many area Ohioans opened their homes for the volunteers to stay in. I was privileged to stay with a wonderful woman in Hamilton County. She worked diligently on the campaign even though she didn't live in district 02. You see, this brave lady emigrated to the USA in 1970 from Czechoslovakia. She lived under Communism's oppression. She knows what it's like to have a one-party system; to live without the freedoms that are slowly being taken away from us here. My new friend is an activist, fighting for America's future, most notably on election reform. SHE is a true patriot.

There were posts on this site last night that said things like, "I can't celebrate the fact that we're still losers," and "Win or Go Home." I have advice for you gloom and doomers: PUT UP OR SHUT UP.
Get off your naysaying asses and get to work. We all have to sweat and toil and fight tooth and nail for every step we take in changing the direction of this country. Putting your time and energy into postive and important causes will make you feel ALIVE, and you won't have time to criticize other people's accomplishments.

So, to the Ohioans who should be proud of themselves and to Paul Hackett---------------------------------------------------------
IT WAS AN HONOR.

2. Good for you!!!! LETS DO IT. It will be our 1994...clean sweep.
They're ginning up the international crises and the ultra refined election fraud strategies in the Republican Bat Cave tonight. Why? Because Hackett shouldn't have gone higher than 35%. He's anti war, called Republicans Chicken Hawks, and was cool on gay issues...all in a conservative Southern, very, Ohio district. "They" must be freaking out. Good, now we play chess and make some rally fancy moves, like getting other candidates to be DEMOCRATS!!!

n.b. I'll bet Brian Sweitzer, D, MT (Gov) is watching this closely. He's a populist and he must be loving this. The party is coming to him.

4. Thanks, blue neen! And thanks to all those who devoted time
to Paul Hackett's campaign. Put up or shut up is exactly right.

What you did in Ohio was amazing and just goes to show you what can happen when people pull together for the right candidate.

I'm committed to helping some progressive Democrats win in Minnesota and in other parts of the country, too. This is the prime time for people to be scoping out both state and national campaigns and signing on for 06.

Time to focus!

5. thanks for the inspiration........
I listened to Mike Malloy rant about how there was no difference between the candidates tonight.....I quietly said I disagree. We need people like Paul Hackett to inspire us to get the job done. I worked hard last fall, got bummed out, but will be back out there next year for any and all who will challenge those who want to ruin this country. I am going to print out your post, so I will always have it to read again when I need a boost!!! Thanks!

6. Thank you.
I met so many good people in Ohio. They deserve so much more than they have been getting.

It was the rich people in the Cincinnati suburbs who put Jean Schmidt over the top. They have profited from the Bush tax cut, AND a 21% tax cut from Governor Taft. They are actually becoming hedonistic!

13. You have much to be proud of
All of your work was extremely worthwhile, but I don't think it negates the concerns of people who expressed doubt about whether or not votes were counted correctly.

The results are certainly plausible, and they might even be true. But Clermont County is where people were caught putting stickers over punch holes for Kerry in Nov. 2004, and Warren County is where there was no oversight whatsoever of the counting process because they put our a fake terror alert. If you believe that similar crap was not pulled against Hackett, I have a bridge to sell you. A full audit might still have resulted in a narrow loss, but I refuse to believe any result that doesn't have one.

We need to do these audits! Not just to possibly win this one, but for all future elections. We just cannot continue to tolerate faith-based elections.

15. Oh, I believe anything is possible out there.
I just didn't post anything about that because I wasn't involved in that part of the process. I didn't want to speak about anything that I really didn't know much about.

When Hackett was giving his speech last night, he never did officially say that he lost. It definitely was not a typical concession speech. I believe the door is open for any investigations if they are needed.

17. If you have any clout with the campaign--
PLEASE ask him to consider asking for an audit. Even if the result is that he still loses narrowly, it's important to demonstrate that Dems are not going to take any more of the very well-documented Ohio cheating crap. We need this for the NEXT elections more than this one.

A request to that effect would have much more clout coming from a dedicated volunteer who donated time as well as money.

Thank you for your work. We need more courageous people like Hackett. He is an example of confronting the junta and not backing down. He made a huge dent in the perception that the junta is impenetrable.

Hear, hear!! Nothing worthwhile is gained easily. Don't complain about the results, get out there and do something, any little something, to make a difference. Fight the good fight!

Thank you for your personal story of the campaign efforts and the wonderful grassrooots support by people from so many different parts of the country. Of course I'm sorry Paul Hackett didn't win, but I'm proud of the determined effort and good showing he made. Fight and win, or fight and lose, then get up the next day and go back into battle. Republican corruption rampant and growing ever more obvious - we need to be like a constant drumbeat in opposition. There is no dishonor in defeat, if you gave it your all. We'll wear 'em down as we keep coming at them, again and again!

on "Democracy Now" last nite and he ISN'T an anti-war candidate by NO means. He's a republican in dem clothing like Lieberman who appeals to and would vote with the R's if elected. He's all for killing more Iraqis and continuing the war. He beats up Bush but underneath he's on of them. IMHO.

First, good for you, blue neen, for your efforts.
Second, anyone who publicly calls Dumbya & co. chickenhawks, and shows the guts Mr. Hackett has, should be in DC fighting the chickenhawks. Do you know if Mr. Hackett plans to run for another office?
Third, apparently many people in Ohio will vote repuke no matter how corrupt and slimy the GOP becomes... greed & stupidity.
