Bush and Cheney Eff'ed Up.....Big Time...
with their little war plans for taking over the oil fields of Iraq and securing a pipeline for Israel's future economy and thus, our country's military foothold in that part of the world. Somehow, it isn't working out the way it was planned. Who could have imagined the Iraqis would improvise and come up with a way to defeat the American forces, one little bomb at a time? They never imagined that the Iraqis would use the most modern technology, such as in cell phones, etc, to blow our shit away. And now, we are stuck in that quagmire. The military is trying to convince Bush to change from a "war on terror" to a "global struggle against violent extremism". They are looking for a way out. Bush is looking for a victory. Unfortunately, his strategy is in tatters. He, Cheney, and the PNAC crowd have eff'ed up royally.

6. Yeah, they were used to the docile sheep of this country
who didn't so much as bleat when these fuckers stole the country out from under them and unceremoniously flushed democracy down the toilet.

4. I was thinking the same thing this morning
Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 10:49 AM by Armstead
NPR had a report on how problematic and convoluted even the releatively styaightforward job of putting Sadaam on trial has become, due to competing interests and factions.

It was a reminder that what sounded so clear and easy in 2002 is actually a Gordian Knot. I don't think they baragained on that, because they were thinking so simplistically.

There are reasons we don't do a lot of things that sound good in theory. They forgot -- or were arrogent enough to ignore -- that basic fact of life.

12. "Arrogant Ignorace" sums it up for me
There were and are plenty of experts (and armchair generals) who predicted what was possible/probable in a half-assed invasion of Iraq. Bush & Co. chose to ignore these folks and went in half-cocked, anyway.

The military brass knew they were not ready nor capable of sustaining Urban warfare (too costly in terms of lives) and their strategy for winning evolved around skirting cities and knocking out troop formations in the open. Saddam's forces just scattered and blended into the cities. Advantage: Iraqi forces.

Check out the pre-invasion news and hype about how the U.S. was *not* gonna be lured into house-to-house combat and urban warfare. What crap.

5. I wonder if the name
"global struggle against violent extremism" - "Global SAVE" might be Orwellian for their plan to destroy the world.

Or if they just want us to think that.

----

The New York Times has an article today saying Bush* is against renaming the "war".

President Makes It Clear: Phrase Is 'War on Terror'

GRAPEVINE, Tex., Aug. 3 - President Bush publicly overruled some of his top advisers on Wednesday in a debate about what to call the conflict with Islamic extremists, saying, "Make no mistake about it, we are at war."

In a speech here, Mr. Bush used the phrase "war on terror" no less than five times. Not once did he refer to the "global struggle against violent extremism," the wording consciously adopted by Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and other officials in recent weeks after internal deliberations about the best way to communicate how the United States views the challenge it is facing....

8. And polls suggest 44% of Americans approve of the entire neocon agenda,
the whole enchilada, the entire garbanzo, lock, stock, and barrel.

9. I just don't believe any poll that says that
I think that number has to be much lower, in reality. Sure, we have a lot of idiots in this country to feed on hate. But the average person just wants to make a decent living, feel safe where they live and work, raise a family and pretty much "live and let live." I don't buy that 44% of this country is behind the Bush administration 100%.

10. You cannot approve of W's performance IMHO unless pre-emptive war,
wholesale torture, fiscal and environmental destruction, unilateral abrogation of international treaties, and a veritable litany of other destructive actions are all a.o.k. with you.

19. Who did they poll? Members of BushCo?
That many might admit approving generally of Dipstick, but not the whole enchilada.

15. actually, i think shrub and cheney have
ruined pnac's plans. pnac was using the admin to advance the pnac agenda but shrub mucked it all up by infusing the religious bigotry and hatred of the fanatical right wing into it . . . imho. i think pnac might have succeeded if shrub hadn't gotten so many so adamantly opposed to his policies.

17. I'm divided on this
One part thinks this IS the way they expected things to go pretty much. The Pentagon papers showed that the miltary industrial complex (now the military/industrial/prison complex) wanted Vietnam to remain a stalemate for as long as possible --- $$$$. So the fact that they sent not enough troops and refuse to send more points to wanting on-going chaos. Afterall if things were quiet we would be under more pressure to leave.

The other part says they really are self-deluded fools with very little military know-how. Rumsfailed is stripping down the military because he believes strongly that we cn fight multiple wars simultaneously with smaller forces deployed. And reality seldom intrudes on their plans.
