No Greater Love - A Mother Mourns the Death of Her Son
Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 01:06 PM by lwfern

(snip)

Debra looks down as she admits, "I wasn't very nice to the chaplain today; I told him to shut ** up; I didn't want to hear it," she continues, confessing, "I don't agree with this war... He (Dusty) went over there hoping to improve things: they both went there eagerly to help and get back home and, when they got there, they realized the task is too big."

(snip)

...Dusty began the process of joining the Guard in July 2001, once his mom returned to Tennessee. Together, they discussed with the recruiter the odds of having to go to war.

"They were very slim," says Debra, "and they had a sign-on bonus and schooling, so it just seemed to be the right thing to do... and then 9-11 happened."

Debra and Dusty had envisioned, not war, but humanitarian missions like providing aid following natural disasters such as tornadoes and hurricanes.

1. I have tears running down my face . . .
I can't imagine how it would feel to be in the shoes of a parent who has lost their child in Iraq:cry:

2. I may have to give up DU for a little while. I'm finding myself
sobbing and fealing extremely low whenever I open one of these threads. God damn you, Bush. What a nice looking young man, and for what?

3. Is it just me...

6. I didn't think so
Some other snippets:

Talks of relative freedom, greater comforts, and frequent phone calls and emails home had lulled many into thinking the men were in little danger, with the assumption that their mission was one of rebuilding the nation

Her angers resurfaces when she speaks of the futility of war

This is their religion—they're fighting for what they've been brought up to believe is correct—how are you going to change anybody's mind on that?"

5. Why should the NATIONAL GUARD serve outside the COUNTRY?????
"Debra and Dusty had envisioned, not war, but humanitarian missions like providing aid following natural disasters such as tornadoes and hurricanes."

For a country to send it's weekend warriors to fight a war on foreign soil is mind boggling - I've never ever understood and will in no way every support or condone this.

It's the called the NATIONAL GUARD for a reason you dumba**es - !!!!

8. many years ago I took a course in
handwriting analysis. I was skeptical going in but came away with a lot of respect for the "field".

Amateur at best, but I picked up on the following:

The falling lines, or downward slope of each line, is indicative of pessimism or depression. A close left margin indicates someone tied to the past, possibly not wanting to go forward. The wide right margin, in conjunction with the narrow left, would indicate a fear of the future (a visit to the linked page is necessary to see the margins).

I'm sure there are some DU'ers who are much more knowledgeable about this, I would be curious to see their impression as there are many more areas of analysis in addition to the few mentioned above.
