Jim Davis, FL, at DFA event, says he disagrees with Dean on most things.
Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 07:16 PM by madfloridian
Way to go, Congressman Davis, that is a new level of nerve. I was afraid the St Pete Times was trying to be divisive, though they are usually among the better papers here. SO, I called talked to his campaign office. He is running for governor.

I said the event was in another city, and I was curious how someone could not agree with Howard Dean on "most" things. I said that bothered me because I agreed with him on "most" things.

I found out that Davis is very busy, which I knew. I also was reminded that he did not vote for CAFTA, which I knew but I did not ask about. I was told he was winning over people, which I did not ask about. I also reminded the aide of our half-hour discussion on the bankruptcy bill, which Davis applauded and voted for.

Way to go. The chair of the New Dems coalition, part of the DLC, does not agree with Howard Dean on most things. I can't find out what he said in detail, though. It's a strange article. I wonder if that is what they all are saying now, the DLC folks. That they don't agree with Howard Dean very much.

That bothers me, because I do agree with him most of the time. So where do we go from here? At least the audience was polite.

Davis dares tweak Dean among fans

After taking a friendly jab at Howard Dean, his audience's inspiration, U.S. Rep. Jim Davis fielded some pointed questions Wednesday night on everything from gay marriage to the Patriot Act.

Davis, a Democrat from Tampa, was campaigning for governor at Latam restaurant at the Centro Asturiano as a guest of Democracy for America, an offshoot of the political organization founded by Howard Dean.

Davis joked that he didn't agree with most of what Dean says, but the audience gave him a pass and clapped at many of the points he made during his speech."END SNIP

I hope someone who was there can let me know how friendly and how joking it was.

4. My impression
is that they disagree not so much on ideology, more on strategy.

7. Could you explain that impression? He said not agree on "most" things.
Agree they want Dean to shut up and be proper, but there are other issues as well.

8. If you're going to press me
then I would say its because Deans policy positions are not out of line with most democrats.

9. Not pressing, just curious. His policies are not too far off.
However they have been doing this since 2003. Why would they do it?

10. I think Dean looks longer term than most politicans.
I think he looks to revitalize the party. Others are to afraid of losing the "confused" voter.

11. Yes, that is part of it.
The others are used to doing things one way only, not being outspoken. Our Florida Democrats especially are very trained to not offend. I think we have to overcome that. The other side offends us with impunity all the time.

5. There is little doubt it is a semi-organized DLC effort to shut Dean down.
Since they didn't get their boy Tim Roemer in to neuter any real opposition to the corporatists, its bash Dean 24/7.

6. Do a search of Roemer and Democrats for Life.
They are the ones pulling Howard Dean sharply to the right on abortion and choice issues. They did not even support Kerry last year.

Something is going on.

12. The article said there were 40, but the actual count was more.
Some estimates going around say more like 80. Some are not happy with the statements.
