ALRIGHT! Lawsuit over unreleased abuse photos! RAW STORY!
'Bout time someone started pushing back!

Reporters: Court must order release of Ghraib photos - RAW STORY

A coalition of 14 media organizations and public interest groups organized by The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press have filed a friend-of-the-court brief in U.S. District Court in New York urging the release of Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse photos late Thursday in a release to RAW STORY.

The photographs, which have been seen by New Yorker journalist Seymour Hersh, are alleged to contain photographs of U.S. servicemembers involved in raping detainees, possibly underage.
<snip>

The coalition, which includes CBS Broadcasting Inc., NBC Universal Inc., and The New York Times Co. , supports a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit the American Civil Liberties Union has had pending the Defense Department since October 2003.

The government argues that the information is protected by Exemption 7(F) of the FOI Act, which protects law enforcement records from disclosure when they "could reasonably be expected to endanger the life or physical safety of any individual." Citing recent riots in Afghanistan...
<snip>

http://rawstory.com/news/2005/Reporters_Court_must_order_release_of_Ghr_0804.html

Sadly, they don't seem to mention the video footage at all, which is known to be particularly horrifying, especially the soundtracks... the screaming... wasn't Hersh the one who spoke of the shrieking?

I know, I know, I am hopelessly hopeful despite the hopelessness of the situation... but at least it's another sign that more and more people are refusing to take all this lying down!

We need to get behind this movement; it's the one that has the potential to reach all the sleeping sheeple, if you ask me...
If the screams of abused children don't wake 'em up, what will?

8. I hope you are wrong.
I hope and pray there are no torture videos with people getting raped. I hope and pray that it's all hyperbole and Liberal-media spin. I hope and pray the rumors I've been hearing about the new material is delirious wishful-thinking on the part of Bush haters and wanna-be hippies.

If 1/10th of the things I'm hearing about the torture are correct, we are not talking about a scandal or impeachment. Events like this have triggered revolutions. Revolutions are not pretty, even ones led by Gandhi or MLK.

I want these videos to go away so badly. I actually breathed a sigh of releif when they weren't released at the end of June.

"Whew! one more month where I can pretend that my government has the moral authority to lead the American people." The selfish part of my psyche whispered.

12. I'm sorry, but it's true, brainshrub. There's written documentation
provided by military eyewitnesses plus human rights groups and the prisoners themselves.

Not only that, but our military has been holding over 100 children in these prisons. That is why they they want to hide it from public view.

We aren't trying to get the word out on this to attack Bush, we want it to STOP! And right now.

Hence the campaign: No more excuses, stop the abuses. See DA's sig.

13. Seymour Hersh talks about the abuse
in "Chain of Command"

according to U.S. military officials:

the unreleased photographs showed American soldiers "severely beating an Iraqi prisoner nearly to death, having sex with a female Iraqi prisoner, and 'acting inappropriately with a dead body.' The officials said there also was a videotape, apparently shot by U.S. personnel, showing Iraqi guards raping young boys."

I think it's interesting to note that three REPUBLICAN senators were trying to add an amendment to the next defense appropriations bill to have some oversight on detainee treatment, and Bush threatened to veto the bill if they did. I heard that Cheney took the three aside to "talk" to them. Anyone ever hear how that turned out?

This is real stuff -- not left-wing propaganda. (I wonder why the left is so often suspected of this when it's really the right that does it all of the time. This is not an attack on you, brainshrub. I was just wondering "out loud".)

14. Hold the phone! US soldiers committed rape at Abu Ghraib prison?
Everything I have read, including Hersch's account, claims that US soldiers only watched or videoed rapes. Does Raw Story have new information to indicate that US soldiers committed rape at Abu Ghraib prison?

Don't get me wrong... For guards to do nothing to stop rape from occurring is just as bad as committing the rape, but I don't want the Abu Ghraib scandal to get Newsweeked by Rove.

simply live in the world that they choose, blocking out reality.
Like someone who knows their husband is always screwing around on them for years.
Has it show to them right in their face and then they get mad at the one that showed them instead of facing the truth and dealing with it.
Blind by choice.
Bad example but the only one I could think of right now.
I have told people what is going on and show them pictures they have not seen and then been told, "I can't handle that, don't show me anything like that anymore"

Like the ones it happened to can handle it!!
Absolutely infuriates me...

26. Jungle fatigues in Iraq?
Edited on Fri Aug-05-05 05:12 PM by The Night Owl
The rape photos on that Aztlan site seem to show soldiers raping, but I doubt the photos are related to any incidents in Iraq because the soldiers are wearing jungle fatigues.

Also, Aztlan's preface about "collusion" between US soldiers and "Jewish pornographers" does not exactly lend credence to the rape photos or the Aztlan site.

I mean, get real. This is how we get Newsweeked by people like Rove.

Seeing those new rape photos next to real photos from Abu Ghraib only makes them more suspect. What do we see in all the real photos from Abu Ghraib? Desert fatigues. What do we see in these supposedly new photos from Abu Ghraib? Jungle fatigues.

I'm not saying these new rape photos are not real, but I do doubt they are from Abu Ghraib.

31. According to Taguba's report.........
http://www.vialls.com/myahudi/rape.html

Swadi, one of seven female lawyers now representing women detainees in Abu Ghraib, began to piece together a picture of systemic abuse and torture perpetrated by US guards against Iraqi women held in detention without charge. This was not only true of Abu Ghraib, she discovered, but was, as she put it, “happening all across Iraq”. In November 2003, Swadi visited a woman detainee at a US military base at al-Kharkh, a former police compound in Baghdad. “She was the only woman who would talk about her case. She was crying. She told us she had been raped,” Swadi says. “Several American soldiers had raped her. She had tried to fight them off and they had hurt her arm. She showed us the stitches. She told us, ‘We have daughters and husbands. For God's sake don't tell anyone about this.’” During Swadi’s visit to Abu Ghraib in March, one of the prisoners told her that she had been forced to undress in front of US soldiers. “The Iraqi translator turned his head in embarrassment,” she said.

The Taguba inquiry has corroborated the contents of the letter smuggled out of Abu Ghraib by a woman known only as "Noor". The enquiry found the letter to be entirely in line with the activities going on within the prison. While most of the focus since the scandal broke three weeks ago has been on the abuse of men, and on their sexual humiliation in front of US women soldiers, there is now incontrovertible proof that women detainees have also been abused. Among the 1,800 digital photographs taken by US guards inside Abu Ghraib there are, according to Taguba's report, images of a US military policeman “having sex” with an Iraqi woman. Taguba discovered that guards have also videotaped and photographed naked female detainees. Bush refused to release other photographs of Iraqi women forced at gunpoint to bare their breasts (although Congress were shown them) - ostensibly to prevent attacks on US soldiers in Iraq. However in reality this is merely to prevent further domestic embarrassment.

34. It's very simple: THEY think they're America
Gangsters get you to commit a horrible crime as part of the initiation so they have something on you and you can never leave.

The current monarchists want us to believe that divulging the horrors they've wrought will destroy the country. No. It will destroy THEM. If this causes a spike in backlash against troops overseas or Americans in general, it's still better than having it come out in the long run. It WILL come out in the long run. If he haven't had a hand in coming clean, then we will all be seen as in collusion.

It's just astonishing how the privileged can always bellyache for help from the unfortunate. The snivelings of Junior's supporters about how persecuted he is are beyond galling: he and his ilk have hounded, killed and marginalized any people who are impediments to their sacred royal right to unquestioned power and shocking wealth.

We HAVE to be the ones to show these photos to the world; if they're shown by others, we will all be perceived as being in cahoots with these dicks. They'd like that. I don't.

43. Taguba Tells All….
From Taguba's Report

snip-

5. (S) That between October and December 2003, at the Abu
Ghraib Confinement Facility (BCCF), numerous incidents of
sadistic, blatant, and wanton criminal abuses were
inflicted on several detainees. This systemic and
illegal abuse of detainees was intentionally perpetrated
by several members of the military police guard force
(372nd Military Police Company, 320th Military Police
Battalion, 800th MP Brigade), in Tier (section) 1-A of
the Abu Ghraib Prison (BCCF). The allegations of abuse
were substantiated by detailed witness statements (ANNEX
26) and the discovery of extremely graphic photographic
evidence. Due to the extremely sensitive nature of these
photographs and videos, the ongoing CID investigation,
and the potential for the criminal prosecution of several
suspects, the photographic evidence is not included in
the body of my investigation. The pictures and videos
are available from the Criminal Investigative Command and
the CTJF-7 prosecution team. In addition to the
aforementioned crimes, there were also abuses committed
by members of the 325th MI Battalion, 205th MI Brigade,
and Joint Interrogation and Debriefing Center (JIDC).
Specifically, on 24 November 2003, SPC Luciana Spencer,
205th MI Brigade, sought to degrade a detainee by having
him strip and returned to cell naked. (ANNEXES 26 and
53)

6. (S) I find that the intentional abuse of detainees by
military police personnel included the following acts:
a. (S) Punching, slapping, and kicking detainees;
jumping on their naked feet;
b. (S) Videotaping and photographing naked male and
female detainees;
c. (S) Forcibly arranging detainees in various
sexually explicit positions for photographing;
d. (S) Forcing detainees to remove their clothing and
keeping them naked for several days at a time;
e. (S) Forcing naked male detainees to wear women's
underwear;
f. (S) Forcing groups of male detainees to masturbate
themselves while being photographed and videotaped;
g. (S) Arranging naked male detainees in a pile and
then jumping on them;
h. (S) Positioning a naked detainee on a MRE Box,
with a sandbag on his head, and attaching wires to his
fingers, toes, and penis to simulate electric torture;
i. (S) Writing "I am a Rapest" (sic) on the leg of a
detainee alleged to have forcibly raped a 15-year old
fellow detainee, and then photographing him naked;
j. (S) Placing a dog chain or strap around a naked
detainee's neck and having a female Soldier pose for a
picture;
k. (S) A male MP guard having sex with a female
detainee;
l. (S) Using military working dogs (without muzzles)
to intimidate and frighten detainees, and in at least
one case biting and severely injuring a detainee;
m. (S) Taking photographs of dead Iraqi detainees.
(ANNEXES 25 and 26)

7. (U) These findings are amply supported by written
confessions provided by several of the suspects, written
statements provided by detainees, and witness statements.
In reaching my findings, I have carefully considered the
pre-existing statements of the following witnesses and
suspects (ANNEX 26):

snip-

8. (U) In addition, several detainees also described the
following acts of abuse, which under the circumstances, I
find credible based on the clarity of their statements
and supporting evidence provided by other witnesses
(ANNEX 26):
a. (U) Breaking chemical lights and pouring the
phosphoric liquid on detainees;
b. (U) Threatening detainees with a charged 9mm pistol;
c. (U) Pouring cold water on naked detainees;
d. (U) Beating detainees with a broom handle and a
chair;
e. (U) Threatening male detainees with rape;
f. (U) Allowing a military police guard to stitch the
wound of a detainee who was injured after being slammed
against the wall in his cell;
g. (U) Sodomizing a detainee with a chemical light and
perhaps a broom stick
h. (U) Using military working dogs to frighten and
intimidate detainees with threats of attack, and in one
instance actually biting a detainee.

snip-
