My local RW station goes Exxxtreme Right!
WRVA here in Richmond, VA just tilted a lot more to the right.

Namely I listen to this station in the morning on the way to work to hear the traffic updates every 10 minutes. Sometimes I listen on the way home and will call up and voice my opinion. Even fewer times, I listen to Michael Savage on a Friday night with my friends as he usually cracks us up.

Now Savage is a weird bird. He's a loony conservative who deems liberals as having a "mental disorder," but he also is VERY critical of Bush and what is happening (or ather not happening) with our borders.

Well guess what....

Savage has been moved from the 7-10pm hours to 9pm-12am and has been replaced by....SEAN HANNITY! One of the very men (along with Rush Limpballs) who Savage constantly criticizes as not being 'real' conservatives but just Bush cheerleaders!

And, ABC News who provides news updates every hour on teh station has been replaced with...FOX NEWS!!!

So obvious! Needless to stay I'll be sticking with traffic updates and be using my iPod a lot more!

2. Same in Columbus too.
I've noticed that also. I used to listen to WTVN because of traffic and weather plus they would have some fun non-politcal call in shows. Now even the fun non-political call in shows have turned into semi-uber-right-wing rethug commentary for local and federal politics. I had to stop listening when they were attacking the Columbus School Board because there too many black on the board ruining the schools. After I heard that I couldn't take anymore.

4. That's happened to many venerable stations
The hijacking of the "full service" radio statioins is one of the negative effects of media consolidation. That's one reason right wing radio became so popular. People didn't seek out goofballs like Rush Limbaugh. he was imposed on them.

When I lived in Richmond way back when, WRVA was the "full service" station. Kind of bland but widely listened to for news, information and community discussions.

Most cities had at least one of those. Not exciting, but respected and served as a common voice for communities.

But then the chains like Clear Channel started snapping them up and turning them into right-wing mouthpieces. Unfortunately, they were able to capitalize on their long histories and presence to maintain dominance of their markets.
