14. I think dems are making a mistake with Minutemen thing
Edited on Sat Aug-06-05 02:52 PM by kwvining
When I get into arguments about immigration, the one point I push home that really works is that the problem is caused by the fact that the laws that prohibit the employment of illegals are full of loopholes, loopholes put in the law by Republican congressmen at the behest of their big corporation masters. The solution to the immigrant problem is simple - if there were no jobs here for them, they would not come. The Minutemen support this same position. If you want to know the truth, these people are as pissed off at the Repigs as much as we are, and we are failing to capitalize on this. I think these people are our natural allies, yet the Republican echo machine is claiming them as one of their own, and we are letting them get away with it.

My personal opinion is that there is no other issue that the Democrats shoot themselves in the ass over than illegal immigration. We are supposed to be the party of the working man. By that, I mean THE AMERICAN WORKING MAN. You know, the one THAT VOTES. The working man is threatened by the flood of these people and H-1 visa people into the country. What is the core cause of this flood? Corporate fascists. They want to use illegals to break the backs of the unions and to put this country on third-world wage scale in general. Why have we lost sight of this fact? Why are some of you championing the illegals? These people are a threat to the well being of working Americans, and this is how we should approach the subject.

Corporations are the big winners of these people being here, not us. We should be pushing the position of amnesty for those who are here, but only if it comes with stiff prison terms for hiring more of them, coupled with some type of foolproof ID system that guarantees the person can legally hold a job in this country. We should be open to more enforcement at the border, but be loud in saying that we don't think that addresses the core cause of the problem - corporate greed. We simply seem unable to point out the utter hypocrisy of the Republicans, who posture like anti-immigrant stormtroopers, while behind the scenes they are hiring all of them they can get their hands on.

Listen to the Republicans. They go on and on about how much they want to arrest these people, shoot these people, build walls, etc etc. You will never, ever here them discuss employer sanctions. Why are we not pointing this out? The Republicans throw out the red meat, kill 'em, lock 'em up, etc, and the emotionalism appeals to the working people who feel threatened. We, like total idiots, say stuff that makes it sound like we are more interested in Mexican nationals than we are US workingmen. The workingman ends up doing what he has done for the last twenty years, voting against his own best interest because the Democrats have failed to verbalize a position that appeals to him, because it is too busy verbalizing a message to appeal to some special interest or ethnic group instead of to working people as a whole. The Republicans end up winning by getting away with selling them a pile of bullshit that sounds like they have their best interest at heart, totally masking the fact that they serve no one but the corporations.

If we presented a message of compassion for those who are here coupled with a stiff assault on the root cause of this - corporate greed - we could turn this into a winning issue. As it now stands, we will regret what we are doing after we realize Karl Rove has hung our own stupidity around our necks once again.

Or do you just want to get back in the pile?

South Park
Goobacks (episode #118)

Originally aired: Wednesday April 28, 2004 on Comedy Central
Writer: Trey Parker
Director: Trey Parker
Production Code: 806

Something otherworldly is happening to the north near I-285. A doorway opens up in the midst of a ball of energy and out steps a man, who quickly learns how to avoid traffic to stay alive. The next day our boys are offering themselves as a snow shoveling service to make money. After Kyle has made his point to Cartman about his lack of work, he has bloodied Cartman's nose the boys see a newsbreak. The newsbreak identifies the otherworldly man as someone from the year 3045 and tells the reporters that he has come back from the future to find work. At the time portal, which follows the one way "Terminator" rules, another man has come back citing the success of the first time traveler's look for work. Stan is intrigued and wants to meet one of the men from the future. More and more immigrants and their families begin to come through the time portal. The boys plan to do some more shoveling when they find out that all their jobs have been taken by time immigrants. The problem starts occurring all over America, time immigrants are taking all jobs for almost no pay and now the present day workers begin to protest the loss of their jobs. The door to the time portal opens wider and many more time immigrants come through the doorway.

Stan comes home from the protest to find out that his parents have hired a time immigrant. Stan complains about the arrival of the "Goobacks" and his parents try to enlighten him on the issue and end their discussion by calling him a "timecist." On The O'Reilly Factor in the "no spin zone" both sides of the issue are presented by a "pissed off white-trash redneck conservative" and an "aging hippie liberal douche." At South Park Elementary Mr. Garrison now has to teach the children English and "future speak." Stan protests his need to learn how to speak their language, they came here to our time, and they need to learn how to speak our language. The intolerant red necks decide to take matters into their own hands when the government refuses to help. They decide to stop the future from happening. Someone suggests that they get that "Global Warming" thing going and usher in a new ice age. Stan tries to order a double cheeseburger at a fast food restaurant but can't make himself understood by the "Goobacks" behind the counter and gets pissed off. Unfortunately for him, his parents here the expletives he uses and he gets in trouble. Back at the protest meeting one redneck suggests that they all turn queer to stop the future from happening. The leader of rally embraces the idea and gets the crowd of men to follow him to the "Little Future" neighborhood, where they all get naked and start making love to each other.

As part of his punishment Randy brings Stan to work, only to find out when they get there that he has been replaced by a "Gooback" who knows something about geology. At the time border, the naked unemployed rednecks (including Randy Marsh) are trying to get national attention for their cause. It is Stan who suddenly realizes that the only way to get rid of the "Goobacks" is to make the future better for them. His speech sets into motion a series of events (to a musical montage) of the present day people working to make the present pleasant. The plan begins to work as the time immigrants begin to fade away. Soon Stan realizes that doing "this is gay," "this is really gay" says Kyle. Cartman says "this is even gayer than all the men being in a big pile and having sex with each other." Stan apologizes to the crowd and calls for everyone to get back into the pile.

18. Who is asking you to?
Edited on Sat Aug-06-05 03:06 PM by kwvining
Did I say welocome them as comrades-in-arms? No. We have to recognize that they have a message that appeals to our base. Quit being a pawn of emotionalism - it is at the heart of why the Repugs are winning. The illegal immigration problem, if approached logically, can be laid right at their feet. We get all in a lather about "thugs at the border" and totally miss the compellingness of the Minuteman's message to our natural base, and how we can join their message, not their methods, to our cause.

What is being missed here is that the Minutemen message appeals to the working class. By allowing them to become identified with the Republican Party, you are playing right into the Republican's hands. There is plenty that the Minutemen are saying that actually could work for us if we just stopped to think about what is being said in the debate. We need to look for places to agree with these people, perhaps not 100%, but enough to where we do not look diametrically opposed to them, which is just what the Republicans want.
