Democratic and Republican candidates for 2008
Edited on Sun Aug-07-05 12:39 PM by The Godfather
I've made a short list of possible candidates for both parties for 2008. This is only a list of people that may become major players, so if you don't see your choice on here, or feel somebody should be included, speak up. I didn't include people that I don't imagine could win the nomination of the party, like Sharpton, Kucinich, etc. I'm not trying to insult these folks. I just don't see them as major contenders. NOTE: These are not ranked in any order. They're listed int the order I thought of them.

REPUBLICANS:

John McCain (Arizona)
Rudi Giuliani (New York)
Mitt Romney (Massachusetts)
Bill Frist (Tennessee)
Chuck Hagel (Nebraska)
Mike Huckabee (Arkansas)
George Allen (Virginia)
Sam Brownback (Kansas)
George Pataki (New York)

DEMOCRATS:

John Kerry (Massachusetts)
Wesley Clark (Arkansas)
Joseph Biden (Delaware)
Mark Warner (Virginia)
Evan Bayh (Indiana)
Tom Vilsack (Iowa)
John Edwards (South Carolina)
Russ Feingold (Wisconsin)
Bill Richardson (New Mexico)
Hillary Clinton (New York)

What do you folks think? Are they're any major players not on one of these lists?

1. Yeah. Al freakin' Gore.
Speculate all you like with the "he's not running" stuff; he so much said when he was pondering running in 2004 that he would be emulating Nixon if he instead came back in 2008.

The point is, his candidacy is just as unsure as any of the others. Plus it can be proven that he got more votes than Bush ever did.

Put him up there, as long as you're going to keep Kerry up there, at least.

2. Fine
Make a point for Al Gore. Leave the "freakin'" out of it though. I didn't exclude him for any reason, other then the fact that the man himself keeps saying he's not planning on running in 2008.

It's the same reason I left off Jeb Bush. He says he's not running.

I think it may be too soon to try to take that jump, but I do hope he is in contention later down the road.

5. Comprehensive list
even without Gore. Who, by the way, says that there is about a zero chance he'll run. AND if he does, there's probably a zero chance he would win. Please don't shut me down...I like Gore...a lot...after The Week today I like Kucinich even better. But let's be real.

(I'm an Edwards supporter but there is A LOT of press lately about Bayh here in Iowa.)

7. Two long shots
For our team:

Barbara Boxer. She has formed a leadership PAC, which is often a sign of higher ambitions. If either Hillary or Feingold opt out, there's an opening for a woman or a progressive-left candidate.

For the other side:

Tom Tancredo. Tancredo is a congressman from Colorado who has an unhealthy obsession with immigration issues. he has been poking around NH recently, and has chummed around with the screwball police chief who is trying to round up illegals on trespassing and other minor charges.

8. Personally, I like the following:
Clark, Warner, Edwards, Feingold and Richardson...

but who the hell asked me, right? It will be the party insiders as usualy who don't listen to the party activists.
