PROTESTING SOLDIER MOM CHANGED STORY ON BUSH
Mon Aug 08 2005 10:11:07 ET

The mother of a fallen U.S. soldier who is holding a roadside peace vigil near President Bush's ranch -- has dramatically changed her account about what happened when she met the commander-in-chief last summer!

Cindy Sheehan, 48, of Vacaville, Calif., who last year praised Bush for bringing her family the "gift of happiness," took to the nation's TV outlets this weekend to declare how Bush "killed an indispensable part of our family and humanity."

CINDY 2004

THE REPORTER of Vacaville, CA published an account of Cindy Sheehan's visit with the president at Fort Lewis near Seattle on June 24, 2004:

"'I now know he's sincere about wanting freedom for the Iraqis,' Cindy said after their meeting. 'I know he's sorry and feels some pain for our loss. And I know he's a man of faith.'

(snip)

On her current media tour, Sheehan has not been asked to explain her twist on Bush; from praise to damnation!

I guess later today we can expect to hear her trashed by the lard ass, drug addicted chicken hawk who called Paul Hackett a "staff puke."

7. Drudge Report takes anti-war mom out of context
The Vacaville, California Reporter told of how Sheehan was invited to meet with Bush and given "VIP treatment" from the military. But even when the article was published, it's clear that Sheehan and her husband had serious questions about Bush -- and were not adulatory as the article by Drudge suggests.

<snip>

"We haven't been happy with the way the war has been handled," Cindy said. "The president has changed his reasons for being over there every time a reason is proven false or an objective reached."

"...But in the end, the family decided against such talk, deferring to how they believed Casey would have wanted them to act.

"...We have a lot of respect for the office of the president, and I have a new respect for him because he was sincere and he didn't have to take the time to meet with us," Pat said.

5. The same drudge who post fake
new pieces on his site? Cindy Sheehan developed a new attitude towards the President and the death of her son when she found out that this war is a sham. Now she is really mad that her son died for a lie and for greed. The President's Greed.....

Drudge Report takes anti-war mom out of context
RAW STORY

An article by Matt Drudge quoting anti-war mother Cindy Sheehan whose son was killed in Iraq grossly took Sheehan out of context, RAW STORY has learned.

The Vacaville, California Reporter told of how Sheehan was invited to meet with Bush and given "VIP treatment" from the military. But even when the article was published, it's clear that Sheehan and her husband had serious questions about Bush -- and were not adulatory as the article by Drudge suggests.

The article by David Henson is not online and was acquired by RAW STORY.

Sheehans meet President Bush

By David Henson/Staff Writer

Thursday, June 24, 2004 - Since learning in April that their son, Army Spc. Casey Sheehan, had been killed in Iraq, life has been everything but normal for the Sheehan family of Vacaville.

Casey's parents, Cindy and Patrick, as well as their three children, have attended event after event honoring the soldier both locally and abroad, received countless letters of support and fielded questions from reporters across the country.

"That's the way our whole lives have been since April 4," Patrick said. "It's been surreal."

But none of that prepared the family for the message left on their answering machine last week, inviting them to have a face-to-face meeting with President George W. Bush at Fort Lewis near Seattle.

Surreal soon seemed like an understatement, as the Sheehans - one of 17 families who met Thursday with Bush - were whisked in a matter of days to the Army post and given the VIP treatment from the military. But as their meeting with the president approached, the family was faced with a dilemma as to what to say when faced with Casey's commander-in-chief.

"We haven't been happy with the way the war has been handled," Cindy said. "The president has changed his reasons for being over there every time a reason is proven false or an objective reached."

The 10 minutes of face time with the president could have given the family a chance to vent their frustrations or ask Bush some of the difficult questions they have been asking themselves, such as whether Casey's sacrifice would make the world a safer place.

But in the end, the family decided against such talk, deferring to how they believed Casey would have wanted them to act. In addition, Pat noted that Bush wasn't stumping for votes or trying to gain a political edge for the upcoming election.

"We have a lot of respect for the office of the president, and I have a new respect for him because he was sincere and he didn't have to take the time to meet with us," Pat said.

Sincerity was something Cindy had hoped to find in the meeting. Shortly after Casey died, Bush sent the family a form letter expressing his condolences, and Cindy said she felt it was an impersonal gesture.

"I now know he's sincere about wanting freedom for the Iraqis," Cindy said after their meeting. "I know he's sorry and feels some pain for our loss. And I know he's a man of faith."

The meeting didn't last long, but in their time with Bush, Cindy spoke about Casey and asked the president to make her son's sacrifice count for something. They also spoke of their faith.

While meeting with Bush, as well as Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, was an honor, it was almost a tangent benefit of the trip. The Sheehans said they enjoyed meeting the other families of fallen soldiers, sharing stories, contact information, grief and support.

For some, grief was still visceral and raw, while for others it had melted into the background of their lives, the pain as common as breathing. Cindy said she saw her reflection in the troubled eyes of each.

"It's hard to lose a son," she said. "But we (all) lost a son in the Iraqi war."

The trip had one benefit that none of the Sheehans expected.

For a moment, life returned to the way it was before Casey died. They laughed, joked and bickered playfully as they briefly toured Seattle.

For the first time in 11 weeks, they felt whole again.

"That was the gift the president gave us, the gift of happiness, of being together," Cindy said.

22. And here's the Vacaville Reporter on the Drudge article
http://www.thereporter.com/news/ci_2923943

In the eye of a political storm

August 8, 2005

By Tom Hall/Staff Writer

Last summer Cindy Sheehan got a face-to-face meeting with President Bush, complete with kisses and condolences.
Today the Vacaville resident is camped outside the president's Texas ranch -- in the glare of the national media spotlight -- demanding another face-to-face meeting, and ultimately his impeachment.

<snip>

Sheehan's role in that battle exploded Monday morning, when Matt Drudge - the infamous commentator behind the popular Drudge Report, a right-leaning online news site - accused Sheehan of changing her tune to serve political purposes. Drudge's story, headlined "Protesting Soldier Mom Changed Story on Bush' and posted in the highest slot on the Web site that receives more than 5 million visits per day, pulled quotes from a Sheehan interview published June 24, 2004, in The Reporter. That story, by staff writer David Henson, was an account of Sheehan's visit with the president in Seattle.

In Henson's story, Sheehan spoke of how she and husband, Patrick, debated before the meeting whether to ask pointed questions about the war and whether to vent frustration over their son's sacrifice. Ultimately, the Sheehans decided not to criticize Bush in the meeting.

<snip>

Sheehan also said the trip to Seattle helped connect her family to others that had lost a son or daughter in Iraq. Sheehan said sharing their story with those families was rewarding. "That was the gift the president gave us, the gift of happiness, of being together,' she said in the story. Drudge included that quote in his Monday morning report, but didn't explain that it referred to sharing with other families, not the president.

<snip>

The Reporter decided to post Henson's 2004 story on www.thereporter.com today. "It's important that readers see the full context of the story, instead of just selected portions,' said Editor Diane Barney. "We stand by the story as an accurate reflection of the Sheehan's take on the meeting at the time it was published.'

14. Oh please, this parsing of snippets of sentences..
I'd like to see her respond to someone questioning her motives, or daring to suggest she's doing this for some kind of personal gain.

Right, Lucky her, the death of her son affords her this wonderful opportunity to be famous and push her personal political agenda. :sarcasm:

The sad thing is, when this trial balloon doesn't float, they'll come up with more heinous accusations, not caring about truthfulness.

20. She just said on radio that Repubs ought to scrutinize Bush's statements
Edited on Mon Aug-08-05 03:04 PM by wishlist
She has found it incredible how all of her words when she was in shock grieving in the weeks after her son's death are being scrutinized to discredit her now, but she is not hearing these RWingers equally scrutinizing Bush's statements during this whole Iraq saga showing how he has lied and misled us.

She just reiterated on Ed Schultz radio show a few minutes ago that she and her family found Bush to be disrespectful and insincere when he met with them 2 months after her son's death and she explained the unpleasant way he talked and acted during the meeting. Says that her going to Crawford was basically spontaneous because of all of the Iraq deaths last week and a spur of the moment decision with very little planning that has unexpectedly snowballed with attention she did not expect.

21. She nailed it with that one. The MSM will be fine-combing every
thing that's poublic about her, but they couldn't bother checking for the veracity of Iraq ties to al-Qaeda or whether there really were WMDs in Iraq.

How can democracy survive a lazy, corrupt press? It's no mistake they shut that paper down in Baghdad.

Go Cindy, the world is with you.
