Paul Hackett: Rush is a "fat-assed drug addict"
said so just now on Ed Schultz...also laughed at him for not knowing the difference between a soldier and a Marine.

Paul Hackett, :yourock:

79. I am so proud of that man. . .
Hackett is absolutely the example of the kind of campaigning and candidates we need running for elections in this country - someone who speaks honestly and directly and who is not blindsided by the tantrums of the Right.

At least that's my theory...

30. I'm sorry but you have to fight back
If the bully on the playground keeps punching you in the stomach and stealing your money and you let him get away with it he'll just keep on doing it. The day you stand up to the bully you find out what a coward he is and you don't have to worry about him anymore.

It's been said that America will never trust a party to stand up for them if they don't even have the guts to stand up for themselves. Democrats are refusing to be pushed around by the playground bullys who's emotional maturity was retarded somewhere around the age of 12 and as far as I'm concerned it's about damn time.

Just where was he in error in describing that anal cyst?

What we don't need honey, is more apologists and "miss manners" like you - or we'll never see the insides of OUR White House and Congress again!

Sure you don't have to bake some cookies or something important like that to give to all your nice repuke friends?

35. Hackett needs to keep fighting & demand recount in Clermont.
Let's bury these vote-stealing SOBs once and for all. Hackett seems to be the right man for the job, 'cause he's seen combat up close and personal recently (not like Kerry, whose combat memories are dim; and Duh-bya, who has no combat memories and who is just dim, period.)

Hackett can do it and it only costs $10/precinct to pay for it. The Rethugs (likely) stole another one and even other Republicans are saying so these days (and they are angry about it, because they voted for Hackett also). See this thread on the subject:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=203&topic_id=388116&mesg_id=388116

Anyone who has Hackett's ear should tell him the fight is FAR from over.

63. Wow, Democrats are Real Again!
This is the kind of person, talking like that, that will get the Democrats back into the mainstream and make people able to relate to us again. Everybody knows that this is how people talk about these assholes every day, at home away from the censors and manipulators of the media, and now we can be heard to be openly saying things like real people; exciting to hear. Republicans can't make phony "latte" shit stereotypes of us when we are clearly middle class, Midwest with everything we say. Somebody should get Kerry etc. to pay attention to how well this goes over with people, and get away from the Democratic-hating "D"LC with its "hide everything Republicans don't like" approach, over-"consulted" until it all sounds like a phony, scripted reaction to the latest polls.

We used to talk openly like this all the time, unless you are not aware that Truman, Lyndon Johnson, FDR and any number of others never would've taken the kind of abuse we have taken from Republicans for 25-30 years now, and would have slammed these people right into a wall with many choice words. Also, to the fear that we have now become as low and horrible as Republicans are--I think of it as the difference between intents. They want to destroy the non-rich, we want to save our country and the world as we affect it. It is like any other situation where you have to adapt, momentarily, the ways of your oppressor to challenge and defeat them. When the police are chasing somebody to arrest them for speeding, what is the only possible way that they can catch up to them to stop them? By speeding. You can only be nice to nice people; the others you have to fight.

Sometimes, when you really take a good shot at some of these rich media abusers, you find people thrilled, cheering, and wondering why your group didn't stand up and fight back like this years ago, and saved us all a lot of suffering, at the injustices that were never fought before.

89. The Democrats must not want to win.
I'm really frustrated with how the Democrats handed victory over to George W.Bush.The closed-minded arrogance and ignorance of thier mediocre minds is no different from the conservatives whom they attack.I told Al Gore and the Democrats how to defeat Bush a long time ago but they would not listen to me,so it's basically their own fault. After all these years, when are they going to help me go public with all the dirt I have on those extremist thugs behind the Clinton Sex Scandal? The Democrats could have turned things around and used it to thier advantage, but Al Gore was afraid to touch the scandal with a ten-foot pole while running for president. It was the biggest mistake of his political career when he should have!

65. Kinda reminds me of another blunt and profane military
man, one who said he would "beat the shit" out of anyone who tried to do to him what Rove did to John McCain--and then, after a couple of days of predictable uproar in the MSM, issued an "apology" saying that he'd misspoken, what he really meant to say was,

he'd beat the LIVING shit out of anyone who tried that.

Gotta love those guys. If anyone can take this country back, it's gonna be them and Dems like them.

72. get the flamethrower out, but
I've never been comfortable with the enlightened side taking shots at people's drug problems, gambling problems, infidelity, etc. Maybe it's because I'm an ex-drinker. Maybe it's because when I hear about other people's problems I think "there but for the Grace of God go I."
I didn't like it when the dark side did it to Clinton, and it seems to me we're better than they are. It's also unnecessary. They've given us plenty of fuel by being sexist, lying, bloodthirsty Nazis. Yes, they trumpet "family values," but so did Clinton, and the attacks on him were unmerited and had nothing to do with policy. Don't get me wrong--there's no need to be soft on them. We can fight, be forceful, and paint these people fairly as traitors, murderers, and assholes--without mentioning their personal problems.

that preaches morality and virtue and lives totally opposite.

If he were the least bit humble and repentant he could be shown some compassion, but he's not.

He deserves to be kicked while he's down.

He is a disgrace to humanity.

81. of course it makes sense. How can a party
that values humanity and compassion, that believes in redemption, that preaches recovery, that is dedicated to rehabilitation, that includes the afflicted, that serves real people with real problems, that reaches out to the sick--how can that party attack anyone for their personal demons? And, let me add, I haven't been above it--but I am uncomfortable with it.
There's plenty to attack Rush Limbaugh about. He's an asshole for 1000 different reasons. And he's a hypocrite for 1000 different reasons, but I think we can mount harsh, effective attacks on the idiot without making his addiction an issue. There's no reason to be soft on him--but, IMHO, using his personal demons for effect makes us hypocrites, too.

83. "Live by the Sword,...."
As for your peculiar concern about the hateful Rush Limbaugh, let me remind you that when Bill Clinton was President, Limbaugh, laughing and joking, called the Clintons' daughter Chelsea a "dog," supposedly meaning very ugly, which besides being false, was one of the most shockingly cruel things I have ever heard in my life. An adult male calling a sensitive teenage girl an ugly, slanderous taunt and personal attack; sometimes I still have to remind myself that something so gratuitously vile was actually said by one of the Republican "moral" leaders, who always attacks other people's "faults." The question is not whether or not we are better than your people--we obviously are--it is how we can fight to win, and since you are ugly, mean-spirited people, here we go. You can only be nice to nice people.

With all due respect, and not trying to start a fight, I will have to decline, and will not change the wording. I did not accuse the poster of being a "Freeper"--your word--but of being a Republican, which I believe. Read the poster's two messages, #72 and #81, and you may find, as I did, that they are very strangely worded, as if "consulted on" as to how to trick the Democratic/liberal website with hook phrases. Another poster even commented on the first one making no sense. I like to think that I can accept a wide variety of Democratic opinions, even conservative ones I may not like but will accept; this, though, had the ring of something totally false and planted. I apologize if I am wrong--I don't think so.

97. Hidden Stillness--WTF!!! Why not search my other posts
and make an informed decision. I've posted in about eight forums on all manner of things, from the stupid to the supposedly sublime, and never, never, with a bit of sympathy for anything republican.
When the fuck did standing against ridiculing someone for addiction become republican? Only a fool would suggest it. And, in case you missed it the first two times around, I think Rush Limbaugh is an asshole as much as you do. But from me he gets a pass on being an addict--even though that makes him the biggest hypocrite in the history of the world. Yyou might even be right--that he doesn't deserve a pass. Sorry, but on this one particular aspect of his life, he gets one from me. Brave people demand mercy, so I'm giving it a shot.
You want to attack Rush? Well, get in line. He's a fucking idiot, an arrogant pompous tautological asshole. But why does someone's addiction matter to THIS PARTY? And why does it have to be part of the argument about L when there's so much related to actual issues to take him apart on?
As I already admitted, I've enjoyed ridiculing him for his addiction in the past--but if there was any doubt in my mind about how morally bankrupt that brand of justice is...you've settled it.

105. Slightly Belated Reply; Back On-line
First of all, let me just thank you for the tone of your response, (with two execptions, which I will get to), and that I agree with almost all of it, and also apologize if you are actually not a Republican operative piece of shit. I cannot search other people's posts, because I do not have enough money to donate to this website, and therefore do not have that feature. Thank you.

First, I will explain why I believed you were a Republican operative plant from the wording of your message, keeping in mind that many people reacted against your post #72. You did something that many of them do, as I have read, that is, you overstated it as if to convince readers: "the enlightened side" as opposed to "the dark side," the "sexist, lying, bloodthirsty Nazis," then throwing in the hook: "they trumpet 'family values,' but so did Clinton." Then your second post continued "How can a party that values humanity and compassion, (etc.)," that "preaches" etc., "how can that party attack anyone for their personal demons?" I got the sense, clearly wrongly, that you were pulling out all the "phrases that work," etc. I agree with all your comments as authentic statements; I wasn't sure they were.

I believe, however, that we cannot give up this attack, and that it was not as simple and able to be isolated from the rest, as you think. It may surprise you, but I am not really impressed with people who "give a pass" to others, just because their behavior reminds you of yourself. My question is, how hard do you fight for those who do not remind you of yourself? When whites fight for blacks, when males attack other males (on this website!) for bigotry against women, when the rich help the poor--then, I will be astonished. The situation also gets complicated because of it, and cannot be ignored: what if the drug addict steals all the money the whole family needs to live on, selfishly, and will not stop? George Bush is a cocaine addict, a drunk, and "coincidentally," the worst Presicent in the history of the country. Please tell me you do not refuse to attack Bush for this "privileged rich boy" behavior. I don't consider that "moral."

Also, it is not a simple attack on someone who has become addicted to a substance--I agree with you that treatment and understanding are the true attitude toward these things generally, but "in case you missed it the first two times around," (one phrase that annoyed me), as you obviously did miss it, I put "You can only be nice to nice people." When Newt Gingrich attacked Clinton for moral failings, then Gingrich was discovered to have a lover during marriage, to have gotten the lover an abortion (like Clinton attacker Bob Barr--same thing), sexually harrassed then threatened staffers, forced "the wife" to sign divorce papers when she was in the hospital with cancer, then would not pay alimony and child support until she and the kids had to beg for help from their church, which they got--and knowing that Repub hypocrites of this type are as common as laid-off workers--then their failings are not "personal" anymore, they are part of a more general arrogance and abuse of power and laws, which only apply to peons.

Attacks for the sake of removing an evil from power are necessary, and as long as they attack us with such bizarre tactics as claiming that Hillary Clinton is a "Lesbian," just to work up bigotry against her--and I am no fan of the corporate Clinton--then you know that these people are evil, and will rip our whole society apart, just so they can win and steal the spoils.

The last point was your--pardon me--snide comment at the end about "my" "morally bankrupt brand of justice." I can't fathom what that meant, or how you presume to know what I have suffered or what I have let go, but honestly, I suspect it was not much more than what others have done--regardless, I don't know what that meant, but I know it meant you are superior to me. So much for not attacking personally.

112. so, who are you, Hidden Stillness?
if you don't think our side actually is more enlightened than theirs?
if you think a principle is a principle, except if you hate somebody?
if you think we can only be nice to nice people, when, in fact, much of the work we do for others most of us do without passing any moral judgment on their character?
if you think it's okay to act as sleazy as Gingrich?
if you think it's okay to act as cruelly as the other side?
if you think it's not okay to have empathy toward someone with whom you share a trait?
if you think it's a good idea to damage our party's reputation by slinging shit like fucking neoncons do?

and, by the way, for the third time, I don't give L a pass on being an asshole, just on being an addict, and I do think personal attacks often are merited. I just don't think they're merited when focused on personal demons. And I don't think I'm superior to you, but you're gonna get hit when you ignorantly tag someone as a republican, which of course you did again by your snide comment "also apologize if you are actually not a Republican operative piece of shit." So, yes, you're going to get personal attacks on your position, as should L, but not on your personal demons--despite the fact that your "I am not really impressed with people who 'give a pass' to others, just because their behavior reminds you of yourself" was of course meant to imply my motives are inferior to yours.
And last, do you think you're actually educating anybody by telling us what scum the other side is? And what does that make you when you argue for acting the same way just because they did it first?
That's the same fucked up logic that was used to take the lives of thousands of innocent Afghanis and tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis. Is that really what you want to base your positions on? The same sort of logic neocons sell to America? Who are you?

102. and one last thing, Hidden Stillness...
I could take your comments in the good faith I'm sure they were intended, or I could question, as you did to me, where you really fall on the political spectrum. I could call you out, too, after all, since you could well fall to the far, far right of me. It's actually far more liberal to argue against ridiculing someone's addiction when the addict is an asshole than to just defend the addictions of various ilks suffered by people with whom we agree. But I don't think you're actually a wingnut, even though they delight in hearing blatant evidence that reveals the limits of our principles. Instead, I just think you're fucking mad at L. 86. You have to look at the blatant hypocrisy to get past the empathy...
I had posted, on numerous occasions on the boards, that I felt that we might cut Limbaugh some slack because of his addiction. I readily admit I was wrong in posting that back then.

Reasoning:

Remarkably blatant hypocrisy from Limbaugh and his ilk.

I figure that if L had a problem, he is the only one that fix that flaw, and, using logic, I thought that he would show a certain understanding for those afflicted similar problems. Much to my chagrin, and dashing any hope of someone having an epiphany, he proved to be even more of an asshole after he cleaned up his act! The rantings became worse, and the whole humility suit came off like so much discarded rags.

Two weeks ago, he was ranting about Medical Marijuana, calling those who find relief in using the item, "a bunch of ragged potheads". He did not learn that he had a far more severe problem with a form of drug induced mania. He chose to pick on the poor and sick, not those who are wealthy and privileged with sever dependency problems, such as himself. He had completely disregarded the fact he was an addict to opiates, and chose to denigrate others that merely sought relief.

He is in favor of severe penalties for not just sellers, but users as well...except for himself of course. He was buying baggies of Oxycontin w/cigar boxes of cash, that is not "Dr Shopping, that is partaking in trafficking! But for someone who smokes a joint for relief from nausea during chemo, or while under duress from terminal cancer, should somehow go to jail?

He never thought, "There but by the Grace of God, go I"; he is revolting in his hypocrisy, and it will be his downfall.

101. yeah, the hypocrisy smells like shit. But...
and I know this is an exceptional case because he's quite an asshole, if we riducule him for his addiction, we're saying that addiction is something worthy of ridicule. I didn't think this party would stoop to that.
I realize I'm in a very small minority on this. In fact, I think I'm the only one to post from this point of view on this thread. But I don't feel we have to stoop to close-minded, mean-spirited, hatred in order to be biting and forceful. There are a million ways to call L an asshole, without ridiculing his addiction.

115. But they are the first ones to complain that 'addicts' are subhuman &...
that is preciely my point; THEY are the ones that brought addictions into the playing field. The base line tor them is to 'act respinsibly, or face the consequences". They act irresponsibly, and never face any consequences.

Personal responsibility is the war cry from the ultra-right; but they show none themselves. L got caught notjust doing pills, but in the situation where he was buying baggies of them w/cigar boxes filled w/cash...no matter where you go in this country, THAT is illegal. he shirks his own responsibility....yet crows about "wefare mothers" addicted to crack or alcohol; this man has no shame...:puke:

These are diseases, and can be treated; but not w/a cattle prods and beatings, but with compassionate care. It is the RW that sees these addictions as moral failure, not a diseases, (until it is convienient for them to escape unscathed by the legal system).

117. I agree with all of your points, even that they brought addictions
onto the playing field--but I think at some point we must be better than them about what is fair game on that field. Talk about addiction, talk about their racist and elitist drug policies, sure. Even call them hypocrites. Ridiculing their own specific personal addictions, though, as others have suggested and done, is not for me. That said, of 116 posts in this thread, I seem to remain the sole advocate of this position. I have even been called a republican for it, and it's entirely possible I'm dead wrong.
Republicans would never dream of defending the weaknesses of someone they hate, though, so I think there's also a slight possibility I'm not so wrong.
