Alan Hubbard, White House: "People feel very good about the economy"
Bush, advisers paint rosy picture of U.S. economy

By Patricia Wilson Tue Aug 9, 6:16 PM ET

CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - President Bush and his top domestic policy advisers painted a rosy picture of the economy on Tuesday even as Americans struggle with high energy prices and growing health care costs.

"None of us are comfortable paying two dollars and a half per gallon when we go to fill up our cars with gas," said Alan Hubbard, head of the White House National Economic Council.

"In terms of how people are feeling about the economy, our statistics show that people, in terms of their personal finances, feel very good about the economy," Hubbard said. "At the same time, there's unease about the economy in general." That anxiety, he said, had to do with high gasoline prices, and the fact that the United States was "a nation at war."

But Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts said Bush's agenda had financially squeezed low- and middle-income families across America. "It won't be 'mission accomplished' on the economy until average Americans are secure in their jobs and can provide for their families," Kennedy said.

1. Try telling that to all the people out of work and in low paying jobs.

5. Who are they trying to convince?
Even ex supporters say his plan sucks.

Maybe if he keeps repeating it, and taps his red shoes together 3 times...

7. I heard his dog won't come when he's called...
That explains why he's always carrying it.

2. Except for the small incident, Mrs. Lincoln.....
how did you like the play? Except for the 2.50 per gallon gas and the instability of job market, how do you like this economy?

3. Rule of thumb:
Any story on the "feel-good" economy accompanied by a photo of Elaine Chao glancing at the Boy King is B-U-DOUBLE L-CHIT.

I have to admit that Bush's "The economy is STRONG...and gettin' STRONGER" catch phrase has been good for a few laughs, though...especially when it's repeated dutifully by Lil' Scotty McClellan and John "When there is no room left in Hell, the dead will walk the Earth" Snow.

4. "Feeling very good about the economy"
reminds me of the fellow who tumbled from the tower's sixty seventh floor.
Zipping past the fortieth, he was heard to exclaim that so far, everything was going O.K. But the pavement was waiting for him, just the same.

13. which people?
the ones getting all the goodies packed into bush*'s legislation? the ones profiting from Iraq?

gas in my neck of woods jumped to 2.35/gallon, local property and school taxes are going up, interest rates up - and the company I work for just cut their health insurance contribution percentage so my health insurance co-pay went up

both my partner and I are out looking for 2nd jobs, meanwhile I have about a week or so left to "milk" a few hours of overtime before that gets cut

we ordered heating oil last week - $1.95/gallon -- and this is summer prices -- I dread thinking about what it will cost when winter comes. We will be supplementing by using the wood stove as much as possible

all I can say is bush* can be as optimistic as he wants - but it don't pay the bills
