Rumors of a McCain - Kerry ticket in '08
as the 2008 election approaches there are signs that an equally intriguing McCain-Kerry ticket could be in the works. If such an improbable thing comes to pass, its genesis might well be traced back to a one-on-one breakfast meeting July 27, when the two decorated Vietnam veterans huddled for more than an hour at La Colline restaurant on Capitol Hill.

Fellow diners said the pair was engaged in earnest conversation throughout the breakfast, although Kerry spokesman David Wade characterized it simply as a chat between two “longtime friends.”

The meeting came in the wake of McCain’s increasingly critical stance on the Bush administration’s conduct of the war on terrorism, particularly the treatment of suspected terrorists at prison camps in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. McCain, who spent years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam’s Hanoi Hilton, led the fight just before the August recess to add an amendment to the defense appropriations bill prohibiting harsh treatment of detainees held in American custody, despite personal lobbying by Vice President Cheney.

McCain rebutted the administration’s argument that the legislation would tie its hands in dealing with people who are not POWs but “terrorists” by declaring on the Senate floor that it’s not “about who they are. It’s about who we are.”

Guess it’s unlikely there will be a Swift Boat Veterans for Truth campaign if McCain and Kerry team up in 2008.

I could never support Phil Bredesen for President..even if nominated. I think a McCain/Miller Republican ticket is more possible than a McCain/Kerry ticket, but why worry..especially since neither will happen?

he had his chance to help his country defeat the fascists in 2004 and he decided to endorse them instead. the once brave and patriotic mccain has become a bottom feeder as far as i'm concerned. he knows what fighting in an unjust war is like and yet he chose not to help put an end to this one and bring our men and women home.

70. He wrote an editorial in the NY Times defending Kerry
& wrote another article somewhere.

When asked if Kerry was able to be Commander-in-Chief he said yes.

He remained completely neutal about Kerry & did not mention him in his speech at the RNC convention.

He said countless times Kerry was his friend, but he would support Bush because of policy differences.

AS a result, the Freepers & other cons detest him more than they did before.

Hate him all you like, but don't lie.

I'm so tired of the vitriol & lies from both sides.

Those in politics who try to be pleasant are disappearing.

30. Um. Who says?
I see absolutely no evidence of any such pairing. The two are long-time friends and they were having lunch together once. Is that it?

This has absolutely no basis in reality. And while there may have conceivably been some chance of McCain joining a Democratic ticket (friends said he has long considered switching although he most likely contemplates running as an independent conservative, not a Democrat) there's absolutely no chance that Kerry would ever join a Republican ticket and the Republican base would NEVER accept Kerry on a Republican ticket.

This is just inside-the-beltway rumor-mongering of the worst kind.

I mean, the Republicans would never go for Kerry as a VP candidate, and Kerry would never run on a Republican ticket.

John McCain would maybe get half as many votes as Joe Lieberman did in his primary run if he ran as a Democrat.

48. These are two men I used to hold in high regard
But no more.

Flame me if you will ....... but I feel neither man is worthy of my precious vote, although one has gotten it and one almost did.

In 2000, I was not in love with Al Gore. Before idiot son laid waste to McCain, I was actually considering voting for him (recall the climate in the early stages of the 2000 primary season ...... we were still living in peaceful Pollyannaville). I decided to go for Gore even before McCain dropped out .... but the fact is, I considered it. I now see the man's true colors ... and they're not nearly the brave red white and blue they once appeared to be. More toward yellow, these days.

Kerry was my first choice early on in the 04 season. I then went to Clark, but when he dropped out, I was back to Kerry. He's my contemporary. I remember him live on Dick Cavitt. I recall so very clearly his decimating that fuckwad O'Neill. I recall him as a hero. A leader. A man with passion and drive, intelligence and courage. Then the campaign. he showed me his ass and I was supremely dissappointed. On election night, at 2.30 AM I called headqaurters in DC (its a local call for me). I BEGGED them to promise me he wouldn't fold.

You know the rest.

So for me ... that breakfast at La Colline ....... ? I have to believe the menu was scrambled eggs, pancakes, fresh cantalope, and orange juice .... you know the menu ...... The Yellow Special.

Two once great men who are now so complacent they just phone it in.

That's interesting - and might explain the differences in McCain's claims to have been the first and only choice with Kerry's comment that he never offered McCain anything that neither he or McCain thought it was workable.

Could the whole story have been blown up by Biden?

69. David Wade's comment is the only sensible line in this whole thing
The only facts here are Kerry and McCain has breakfast together. This article actually pits as contradictory - 2 people engaged in earnest conversation and Wade's a chat between two "longtime friends".

If they wanted to come up with things they could have been speaking about it could range from some piece of legislation one wanted the other to work with him on or even they might have felt the need to get past last year for the good of what they could do together. They both just wrote cancer survivor stories for Armstrong's website - so maybe Kerry (who just saw Armstrong) got McCain involved. It's easy to come up with ideas all more likely than discussing 2008 at a public restaurant.
