Jagger rolls back the years to join the Bush-bashers
Jagger rolls back the years to join the Bush-bashers
By Harry Mount in New York
(Filed: 11/08/2005)

It must be tough to remain a rock and roll rebel when you are a knight of the realm, a member of the MCC and an ageing playboy of international repute.

But 62-year-old Sir Mick Jagger refuses to let the years, or his reputed £180 million fortune, get in the way of taking on the politically fashionable role of Bush-basher and scourge of the American Right.

The Rolling Stones' new album attacks the US neo con movement
"You call yourself a Christian, I call you a hypocrite/You call yourself a patriot, well I think you're full of s***," he sings on a track from the Rolling Stones' new album, A Bigger Bang.

And the chorus asks: "How come you're so wrong, my sweet neo con?"

6. Mick couldn't target a better age group (boomers)
Bush takes it on the chin in the new Rolling Stones tune "Sweet Neo Con." In the most political song from their upcoming "A Bigger Bang" album, Mick Jagger sings: "You call yourself a Christian, I call you a hypocrite/ You call yourself a patriot. Well, I think your are full of !" Jagger tells Newsweek he's not sweating possible repercussions. "I think is a bit worried because he lives in the U.S.," crows the English rocker. "But I don't."

20. Not hating,
just laughing. No offence intended. ;)

They did great stuff, but had lost any relevance by the mid 70's, and even in retrospect that good stuff is tired from repetition to my ears.

Today Sir Mick is a dick, sorry. But I wasn't there then so what do I know. :)

Think I'm underestimating how big the Stones still are in the US. :D

Still, Jagger is just cashing in on prevailing winds, same as he's done for decades.

He seems to be involved in green things and anti landmine legislation. He wrote that awful song I can't remember after 9-11!

15. And the preacher said, you know you always have the Lord by your side
I was driving home early sunday morning through bakersfield
Listening to gospel music on the colored radio station
And the preacher said, you know you always have the
Lord by your side

And I was so pleased to be informed of this that I ran
Twenty red lights in his honor
Thank you jesus, thank you lord

I had an arrangement to meet a girl, and I was kind of late
And I thought by the time I got there she’d be off
She’d be off with the nearest truck driver she could find
Much to my surprise, there she was sittin in the corner
A little bleary, worse for wear and tear
Was a girl with far away eyes

So if you’re down on your luck
And you can’t harmonize
Find a girl with far away
And if you’re downright disgusted
And life ain’t worth a dime
Get a girl with far away eyes

Well the preacher kept right on saying that all I had to do was send
Ten dollars to the church of the sacred bleeding heart of jesus
Located somewhere in los angeles, california
And next week they’d say my prayer on the radio
And all my dreams would come true
So I did, the next week, I got a prayer with a girl
Well, you know what kind of eyes she got

So if you’re down on your luck
I know you all sympathize
Find a girl with far away eyes
And if you’re downright disgusted
And life ain’t worth a dime
Get a girl with far away eyes

Thank you Mick.

24. Jagger: Song not attack on Bush
Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 12:34 PM by MsAnthropy
Looks like they got to him!

NEW YORK (AP) -- The Rolling Stones' upcoming album contains a song seemingly critical of President Bush, but Mick Jagger denies it's directed at him, according to the syndicated TV show "Extra."

"It is not really aimed at anyone," Jagger said on the entertainment-news show's Wednesday edition. "It's not aimed, personally aimed, at President Bush. It wouldn't be called 'Sweet Neo Con' if it was."

The song is from the new album, "A Bigger Bang," set for release September 6.

There is no mention of Bush or Iraq. But it does refer to military contractor Halliburton, which was formerly run by Vice President Cheney and has been awarded key Iraq contracts, and the rising price of gasoline.

28. Ambiguity breeds curiosity. Mick is a promoter.
Mick knows that "Bush" really has little to do with any of this.

I don't think anyone "got to him" at all.

31. Yup. He wants to sell records. I'll bet he reads the polls in the news.
The Bush agenda aint exactly popular anymore- I'm sure he knows this.

If people who "like Bush" pick up this record and move it up in the charts, all the better.

The more he talks, the more he presents a front that he is "worried"- the more controversial and likely to sell it is.

This is the man who co-wrote "Sympathy for The Devil" and "Street Fighting Man"- he knows how to reflect the times and promote his tunes.

Perhaps we are both reading to much into this- we shall see!

33. That is the RW spin on the interview. Mick said it was about ALL
Republicans. Doesn't that include Bush? Mick just meant it wasn't exclusive to Bush alone. Richards didn't asnswer the question. He said it was Mick's song ands he told him"pointy, pointy" inferring "Bush".

35. Rember their anti- Neocon tune "High Wire" from the '80s?
It was all about Iran Contra- so this is not the Stone's 1st stab at taking on the neocons.

(Jagger/Richards)

We sell 'em missiles, We sell 'em tanks
We give 'em credit, You can call the bank

It's just a business, You can pay us in
crude
You love these toys, just go play out your
feuds

Got no pride, don't know whose boots to
lick
We act so greedy, makes me sick sick
sick

So get up, stand up, out of my way
I want to talk to the boss right away
Get up, stand up, whose gonna pay
I want to talk to the man right away

We walk the highwire
Sending the men up to the front line
Hoping they don't catch the hell fire
With hot guns and cold, cold nights

We walk the highwire
Sending the men up to the front line
And tell 'em to hotbed the sunshine
With hot guns and cold, cold nights

Our lives are threatened, our jobs at risk
Sometimes dictators need a slap on the
wrist

Another Munich we just can't afford
We're gonna send in the eighty-second
airborne

Get up, stand up, who's gonna pay
I wanna talk to the boss right away
Get up, stand up, outta my way
I wanna talk to the man right away

We walk the highwire
Putting the world out on a deadline
And hoping they don't catch the shellfire
With hot guns and cold, cold nights

We walk the highwire
Putting the world out on a deadline
Catching the bite on primetime
With hot guns and cold, cold nights

Get up! Stand up!
Dealer! Stealer!
Hey!

We walk the highwire
We send all our men into the front lines
We're hoping that we backed the right side
With hot guns and cold, cold nights

We walk the highwire
We send all the men up to the front lines
And hoping they don't catch the hellfire
With hot guns and cold cold, cold, cold,
cold nights

We walk the highwire
We walk the highwire
With hot guns and cold, cold, cold nights

With hot guns and cold, cold nights
