A pal just told me Clinton in the 90's
told the oil companies that he would put the oil reserves on the market if they didn't cool it with the high prices. Does anyone know if that's true and the specifics. If it is true...why in the fuck doesn't the chimp do the same? Oh wait, yeah that's right.......

Clinton considers tapping oil reserve; Bush opposes move; Gore supports idea

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - President Clinton is considering tapping into the country's Strategic Petroleum Reserve to tame heating oil and gasoline prices, but has yet to reach a decision and senior advisers are split on the course of action, according to senior officials familiar with the deliberations.

5. Big difference with today....
When * is FILLING the SPR MORE AND MORE when oil is at its most expensive point ever!

Thus creating higher (artificial) demand and, you guessed it, hiking prices even MORE!

7. HMMM Could it be that their stocking up
to allow them to use this oil to lower the price of oil next year prior to the 2006 elections.

With this administration one has to wonder especially since they weren't above accusing Clinton/Gore of considering the same thing in 2000.

2. Clinton and Gore were attacked for considering it
R's said it was an "election year ploy" to help Gore win votes.

12. Sooo, when have you ever heard a Democrat use Republican's words against
them? Republicans would be their own worst enemies if the Democrats only had a research dept and were willing to use it. Remember how the Republicans berated Clinton about sending American Troops to Kosovo. Things like "No Exit Strategy", America should not be a Nation Builder or a World Police Force. Umm what is it called again when you hunt down bad guys and throw them out of power only because they are thought of as bad guys? Police what??

3. Here's some info...
http://cryptome.org/spr/spr-eyeball.htm

--excerpt--

But only about 100,000 barrels a day go into the United States reserves out of worldwide consumption of 82 million barrels. The United States consumes about 20 million barrels of oil a day, or about a quarter of global consumption, so at its current level of about 671 million barrels, the reserves would provide the equivalent of just two months of crude imports.

It is impossible to know exactly how a complete withdrawal of the reserve's oil would play out since that has never happened before. Altogether, technicians at the reserve estimate it can release a total of 4.5 million barrels a day, falling substantially short of current domestic consumption. The two largest withdrawals were 17 million barrels during the Gulf War in 1991 and 30 million barrels in 2000, neither of significant size or duration.

6. The oil reserves have been a weapon to increase oil prices since 2001,
or so it could be strongly argued.

10. Asking Bush to freeze oil company profits
would be about as productive as asking a great white shark to stop eatting seals for lunch.

11. Bush needs those oil reserves. How can he carry out the Iraqi
war, and still invade 2 or 3 more countries without gas for the Humvees?
