In order, the top five most liberal cities are Detroit; Gary, Ind.; Berkeley; Washington, D.C.; and Oakland.

In order, the top five most conservative cities are Provo, Utah; Lubbock, Texas; Abilene, Texas; Hialeah, Fla.; and Plano, Texas.

Well sonuvabitch! No wonder I get "those looks" at the stoplights with my Kerry/Edwards stickers all over the bumper when I drive to work!

I knew it was bad here...now I know how bad.

21. a large African American population
"To create the rankings, the nonpartisan Bay Area Center for Voting Research pored through voting records from the 2004 presidential election for every city with a population above 100,000.

The results, released yesterday, show the country's most liberal cities have large black populations and are situated in the Northeast, Midwest and California."

Although I'm still surprised.

5. Coecytus
"Through me the way into the suffering city,
Through me the way to the eternal pain,
Through me the way that runs among the lost.
Justice urged on my high artificer;
My maker was divine authority,
The highest wisdom, and the primal love.
Before me nothing but eternal things were made,
And I endure eternally.
Abandon every hope, ye who enter here."

9. Plano, TX?
That city represents everything that's wrong with America. When I was living there, they had a suicide epidemic among teens, followed by a heroin epidemic among teens. Now they have a steroid epidemic.

The problem is the rich and pre-rich people that live there spoil the kids instead of raising them. MOney and keeping up with the Joneses is more important than real values. Lots of sick stuff going on underneath the surface in that place..

My husband and I lived there for a year and a day. Just long enough to fulfill the contract he was working on.

God, I hated it there.

I think a lot of people stay because they hear about the great schools, etc. I would never, ever raise my kids there.

Edit: This is a funny story. I actually dropped out of HS in my junior year because I just couldn't stand to be in that putrid atmosphere anymore. I got my GED and aced the SATs, but I was worried that I wouldn't get accepted into the college I wanted to go to because I was a drop-out. The Dean of admissions asked me why I dropped out and I answered honestly. He looked again at my transcript and smiled. "Ah, Plano," he said. "That's totally understandable. Anyone who drops out of Plano is alright with me." I was accepted on the spot. Apparently, Plano has a reputation.

17. I have my doubts about the methodology of that study.
Dallas ranked 32, Austin ranked 93 (both on the Liberal list). Which makes me think they didn't adjust for population.

24. I stopped for gas at a truck stop in Tulia once.
It had a restaurant and convenience store and a bunch of chattering folks.

A bus with some high school athletic team pulled in and the passengers came in and the place went silent. It was spooky.

The boys were all black, but that couldn't have had anything to do with it, right? Course not!

23. We're #6 conservative in Colorado Spings
... but we were the largest city in the top 12. The local paper was saying some people were surprised we were that high, but I was really surprised that we weren't in the top three, what with all the military bases, AF Academy, Focus on the Family, and New Life mega-church.

34.  a Lubbockite remembers
Growing up in Lubbock, I still remember the 1964 election. The Lubbock area went for Barry Goldwater over native Texan LBJ. I remember all those "AuH2O" bumperstickers. (Gold-water for those who didn't take chemistry). Goldwater had a big rally at the Muncipal Coliseum that made the national evening news.

35. Anchorage ranks in there with the most conservative, too
but it doesn't feel like it. I don't care ... people can be as conservative as they want to be as long as they don't try to ram it down my throat. Our conservatives seem to be fairly tolerant. I'll give them the same courtesy.
