Bill Maher- Larry King Transcript (Aug 11)
From:http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0508/11/lkl.01.html

CALLER: I'm going to make -- I am going to make two points. Firstly, when you say something like the Democrats just lost it, OK, they lost the election, and you don't touch on the fact that the Electronic Voting Corporation promised, publicly, to hand the election to George Bush. And we know that Ken Blackwell, secretary of state of Ohio, received hundreds of thousands of dollars to purchase voting systems in Ohio. And yet that money was left in the bank. And hundreds, you know, thousands of people in Ohio were denied the right to vote. They waited eight to 10 hours. OK?

And another point is this: The neoleft. And I'm a leftist, OK? I'm 45 years old, and I'm a leftist. But I don't believe the neoleft is leftist. They seem to be more just as status quo-oriented as the right wing.

KING: We get the gist.

MAHER: Well, first of all, we did talk about that. I did try to expose the fact that -- we did it on our last show with Gore Vidal of the last season -- that there were shenanigans in the Ohio election, and I know the Republicans said, well, you know, there are some irregularities. You know, somehow all the irregularities favored Bush. So look, I'm on the page with you. So I'll give you Ohio.

What about the other three and a half million votes that Bush won by? You know, it's -- you cannot solve this problem by just blaming the cheaters. Just assume the Republicans are going to cheat. Because they will. The Democrats have to take responsibility to win an election by getting a considerable amount of votes more than the Republicans do, even with the cheating factored in. And they don't do that by trying to be Republican, which is what they try to do.

There are 79 million people in the last election who didn't vote, 79 million. That's a big pond to fish in. Start fishing in that pond, instead of the Republican pond.

4. Bill had it exactly right.
79 million votes. If the Democrats start acting like Democrats again, they'll grab the attention of a lot of those 79 million people. And then we can win.

5. Yes, exactly....
I'd like so much for DU to move beyond 2004 and election fraud, and start trying to win the hearts and minds of those 79 million people!

A good start would be in my new sig line, which I hope reflects moving on with new ideas!

6. NO MACHINES! Maher AVOIDS the issue. Don't LET Repubs cheat!
We should prosecute the cheaters and have verifiable paper ballots.

No more machines.

8. It's already been proven that you can win popular vote
Edited on Sat Aug-13-05 04:09 PM by jayctravis
and lose the electoral college which is what counts.

If there was enough tinkering in enough places in Ohio, then theoretically that state becomes the on/off switch between the two candidates winning and those other three hundred million votes aren't a factor.

Wasn't the republican election committee poised to do some shrieking if Bush got the popular vote but lost the EC?

9. Since 2000, and Gore winning the popular vote !
So why haven't we gotten rid of the EC ? It would certainly level the playing field, the guy (or gal) with the most votes wins!

It would certainly be difficult to "fix" every machine in "every" precinct in the country!

And why is the DNC tweaking the 2008 primaries NOW, when they could be fixing election problems, or resolving old ones? Where's the chatter about making election day a national holiday, or keeping the polls open for a week or so ? The very people we need to reach, can't afford a day off when lines are several hours long.

I mean, we really do need a bipartisan commission to look into all these problems...we have time :)

10. Voting machines ACROSS THE COUNTRY showed bush votes
Edited on Sat Aug-13-05 05:05 PM by loudsue
when people hit the screen to select Kerry. FIFTEEN different States had the SAME problem, and nobody thinks that a "default" vote for bush is a problem? That ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY all of the "glitches" favored boosh? Man! What luck, huh?

I don't think so.

You can switch millions and millions of votes with a couple of keystrokes.

THAT IS THE PROBLEM!!!

Boosh DID NOT get all those million extra votes! They were PROGRAMMED into the machines!

It wouldn't have mattered if ALL 79 MILLION people who stayed home had voted. In a couple of keystrokes,

you just switch the NAME behind the totals,

and voila! The winner is actually the LOSER by the exact same number of votes he would have won by!

Until this problem is corrected, we'll see higher & higher vote totals for the republicans in tight races, because the DEMOCRATS will be voting more!

THE VOTES ARE BEING SWITCHED!! It started in 2000, got worse in 2002, and was perfected in 2004. Along with disenfranchisement, tearing up Dem voter registrations, and "missing" ballots from locked-down elections boards, the republicans don't miss a beat. They KNOW DAMNED GOOD AND WELL THEY CAN'T WIN ANY ELECTIONS that are done fairly.

11. I understand the problem....
why doesn't the DNC and DLC ? I'd just like to see some support with such a huge problem from people who ask me for money every 15 minutes, well, so it seems.

I'm probably not expressing this too well, but why send money to support Democrats, if they're going to lose anyhow?
