Mattlage's COUSIN: "I’m a veteran, and I want to offer you my land"
http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/index.php?id=3724

“A neighbor of President Bush’s has offered us his land,” the source said. “It’s got plenty of acreage for us, it’s private land, we would have legal permission to be on it, it’s much closer to the ranch — in fact it’s across the street from his (Bush’s) church.” “We have taken him up on his offer,” the source added.

Sheehan was expected to begin moving as early as Wednesday morning.

She is in the 10th day of her vigil on Prairie Chapel Road, which leads to Bush’s 1,600-acre ranch. She calls her site “Camp Casey,” after her 24-year-old son, who was killed in combat in Iraq.

According to the source, the land offered to Sheehan is owned by Fred Mattlage, who is a distant cousin of Larry Mattlage, a man who fired a shotgun over the weekend in frustration over the commotion caused by the vigil.

27. I agree. I also think it's ironically significant that the desecrator's
truck was brought to a halt by a piece of cross flattening his tire....

He had to stop by the road to get out and fix it, thus preventing his escape and humiliating himself further to boot. I don't want to condemn the man without knowing his mental state and history and all that, but it sure seems like a bit more of the "new" kind of Texas justice at work.

Not in Texas. Not for very long. Not with those who haven't been pickled in kool-aid.

26. This should be an award-winner ... rushed or not!
Just saw Miles O'Brien on CNN interviewing the commissioner from whatever county that is, and the Commish was standing in the pre-dawn darkness on the section of road in dispute (before the offer of land for Camp Casey to move to). It was surreal!

The guy warned the CNN morning anchor that the first thing he noticed when he arrived there this morning was that THEIR TRUCK would have to be moved or it would be towed. Miles asked him if they could do the interview first and the guy reluctantly said okay -- no doubt realizing he might miss out on his two minutes of fame in front of a national news camera if he didn't relent. But he hastened to say, again, that the CNN satellite truck would have to be moved or it WOULD BE TOWED.

Then he replied to Miles' further questions by saying that lots of the people out there with Cindy Sheehan "have never been out in the country" and were unaware that when they walk near or in the bar ditch, they would encounter "redbugs" (by which I think he meant the red fire ants which will blister your leg off for sure) and snakes. Miles thanked him for the warning and said he'd pass it on to his crew.

When Miles asked if the donation of some acreage by a sympathetic landowner for Camp Casey to be moved to would solve the problem for the county commission, the Commish said he just didn't know yet -- they hadn't moved yet and he understood there was only an acre or so of land being donated which wouldn't provide enough space, and there was a county road in that area too.... In short, he seemed very reluctant to admit even that some progress toward resolution was being made.

O'Brien asked the Commish about the desecrator in the pickup truck who was arrested, and this local commissioner knows the guy, he confirmed. He said the fellow is a "war veteran" who "has his own agenda, I guess," and carefully avoided endorsing the man's behavior or condemning him either.

The interview ended with Miles saying, "Well, I guess it's time to move the truck," and the Commissioner assuring him yet one more time that if CNN did NOT move it, it would be TOWED. They like towing things in Texas~! :D

Btw, I have lived in Texas a lot, though I'm an Okie by birth and rearing and presently live in Tulsa which is my city stomping grounds. I lived and worked the final three years of my career in Dallas, from 1994 to 1997. My mom was a Texan till Dad moved her to Oklahoma when they married just before he shipped out in WWII, and it took her over two decades to become an Okie -- Texans can be that diehard Texan!

But there are plenty of good ones, as others have said, and I know and love a lot of them. My niece, her hubby and baby Nate live in Houston and two of my exes actually DO live in Texas. :eyes: And on my mom's side of the family there are still dozens of Texans scattered around the huge state.

Watching that interview this morning just after seeing Swimmer's film from Camp Casey gave me a powerful nudge toward packing up a few nights' worth of things in the ole car and heading thataway. I'd drive my motorhome but don't want to take up that much space at Camp Casey, wherever it is; and anyway, I LIVE in it so it's not easy to just drive it around. Too many things to batten down and also the thing isn't exactly gas-conserving! :dilemma:

I hope a few of you have read this far, because what I really wanted to say in my response on this thread was

TRUE GRASS ROOTS have shot down deep into Texas earth near Crawford Coward Canyon, and it's the real deal like this that draws sincere believers who will stand their ground till the end. I believe that, if it hadn't happened before then, the day Cindy Sheehan first decided she was going to go camp out as close as she could get to Bush property near Crawford and stay there until he spoke to her again was the day GWB should have heard his administration's death knell begin to toll........

17. While Texas has an overabundance of bushbots, its true
And has given us other evil men like Delay, Dick Army and John Cornyn, there are also many people great people of truly great character who come from this state. We've seen the worst of it for a good long time and are determined to try balance out the dangerous and the delusional. Yes, we are outnumbered, but our voices are strong.

23. It's unfortunate that Bush has positioned himself as the archetypal Texan
That carefully-worded line at the start of his vacation about the importance of "re-discovering his Texas roots"...there was an excellent bit in The New Yorker (2004-09-20) on this:

"From a theatrical point of view, the real Bush is a bad actor. Although everything in his statements is designed to show strength, nothing in his presentation of self does. He cannot sustain the illusion of intellectual command. He is betrayed by his darting eyes, his misspeaking, his inability to improvise, his awkward pigeon-chested swagger. http://www.newyorker.com/printables/critics/040927crth_theatre">In Texas, that swagger “is called walking,” he said at the Republican National Convention, earlier this month; everywhere else, they call it walking on tiptoes."

18. My decent folks in Texas rant
I grew up in Texas. There are many decent folks here. People usually have a lot of common sense. There is a strong independent streak. People don't generally drink anybody’s Kool-Aid.

Crawford is very religious but it is not the buckle of the Bible belt. People tend to take their religion more in stride.

Passionate honesty is very popular here. People are usually not that partisan.

Texas was Democratic before the neocons came to town. Crawford is in a Blue district.

----------

I have patiently ignored countless examples Texas bashing. I understand the feelings behind them but it is not very constructive.

Veteran Offers New Campsite to Camp Casey, Closer to Bush Ranch
August 16th, 2005
Camp Casey is moving closer to Bush Ranch…

A veteran and relative of relative of “the man who had fired a shotgun in frustration over the protests” has offered his property to Cindy Sheehan and Camp Casey. The property is closer to Bush’s Crawford ranch.

“A neighbor of President Bush’s has offered us his land,” the source said. “It’s got plenty of acreage for us, it’s private land, we would have legal permission to be on it, it’s much closer to the ranch — in fact it’s across the street from his (Bush’s) church.”
