"Bush, unlike most Americans, doesn’t really get time off from the job."
No Summer Doldrums
The White House promised that President Bush’s Texas vacation would be busy. But they might have wished for a little less activity around the ranch.

Aug. 17, 2005 - When President George W. Bush left Washington earlier this month for a five-week visit to his Texas ranch, the White House seemed more sensitive than ever to criticism that Bush has taken too much vacation during his presidency. Administration officials reminded reporters that Bush, unlike most Americans who take a leave from work, doesn’t really get time off from the job. Every morning, whether he is on vacation or not, Bush receives briefings on national security, signs documents and holds conferences with top aides. On most days, the president receives multiple updates from his staff on Iraq, terrorism and other issues of international significance. While prefacing that Bush would enjoy some “down time” on what is shaping up to be his longest sojourn away from the White House, Press Secretary Scott McClellan told reporters the president’s visit to his Crawford ranch would be a “working vacation.”

So far, Bush has maintained a relatively busy schedule. Two weeks ago, he hosted Colombian President Alvaro Uribe at the ranch to discuss Colombia’s efforts to combat guerilla groups. Last week, Bush took two quick day trips—to New Mexico, where he signed a new energy bill into law, and to Illinois, where he signed a controversial highway-funding bill, which critics decried as too expensive and bloated with congressional pork. Sandwiched in between those trips: meetings with his economic advisers last Tuesday and a sit-down with his foreign-policy team on Thursday. Both of those events were followed by short news conferences at the ranch, where administration officials hoped to capitalize on a slow news cycle and a captive national press corps to push the president’s agenda.

For the White House, maintaining a sense of momentum this August is perhaps more important than in recent years. Bush is now well into his second term and, like most of his Oval Office predecessors, is staring down a deadline on the degree of his political prowess in Washington. Until recently, Bush had not captured many high-profile legislative victories on the Hill. Social Security reform, his biggest second-term agenda goal, has stalled, and efforts to rewrite the tax code were pushed off until next year. Last month, as Congress approved a flurry of major bills in the last days before the August recess, the White House took a victory lap, citing progress on the energy bill and the Central American Free Trade Agreement as signs that Bush was not yet a lame duck. “The facts say otherwise,” McClellan said. “We are getting things done for the American people.”

Administration officials had hoped to maintain that momentum heading into September, when Congress takes up the Supreme Court nomination of John Roberts and Bush plans to renew his Social Security push. But that momentum—as well as the president’s plan to focus heavily on his domestic agenda—continues to be undermined by worries about the war in Iraq. It’s a story that continues to be front and center thanks to a recent spike in casualties, troubles in the drafting of the Iraqi Constitution and by the story of Cindy Sheehan, the military mom turned antiwar activist who has become the face of poll numbers that suggest a growing number of Americans want to see U.S. troops come home—sooner rather than later. A CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll conducted the first weekend of August found that 54 percent of those surveyed believe the United States “made a mistake” in sending troops to Iraq. The same survey found that 56 percent of those polled want to see a reduction in the number of troops stationed in Iraq.

2. You're right he should get what the rest of us get
Since he's only been in the job 5 years he gets only 2 weeks of vacation a year. He has to find someone in the chain of command to cover for him though while he's gone, so either he or Dick Cheney get to go home for Christmas.

After the one week for Christmas, he can take a week at his ranch in August. He only has 5 sick days though which he can't take concurrently, so he might want to think about saving up that week at the ranch to spread out throughout the year in case he gets sick.

Please. :sarcasm:

You know. Bush did have it right in the debates. Being the President is a hard job. It's hard work. Cause you know. Working in a Steel mill or a Coal mine is a walk in the park. Same with being a long haul truck driver. Shit that's nothing. Hell he gets more vacation time than teachers and we all know that teachers do jack shit right? Fuck him and his working vacation. They talk like his is the only job in the world that's difficult and draining and he really deserves to take a quarter of his time off. If he didn't want to be President he shouldn't have run for the job.

He's obviously not cut out for it.

5. Oh, bullshit. Bush just schedules himself a light work week every week.

Remember when the planes in DC airspace caused the capitol to evacuate, and Bush didn't know because he was in the middle of a two hour bike ride with some friends?

For that to happen, he simply tells his staff to not bother him. Simple as that. Bush decides when he's going to work, and anyone that wants to make a big deal out of going to fundraisers still can't come up with a decent effort.

10. He works when his handlers want him to and not a minute more
And let's not forget where he is when he is either working or not:

- 24 hour access to a plush private plane with massive security

- 24 hour access to the WH, private chefs and any other luxury he wants

- Camp David

- European trips at tax payer expense for any purpose

- Extravagent gifts from foreign governments

- Access to any form of largesse he cares to bestow on his family, friends or associates

Nah, this guy wouldn't know a bad day at work if it hit him in the head

8. You notice how many times Bush has uttered 'it's hard work!" about
his job? When Clinton was president, the only thing regarding work I remember him saying was something like "leave me the fuck alone so I can get back to work". Bitches in the republican party had the nerve to complain about Clinton saying that all the time. Now why aren't they complaining about Bush yelling "hard work"?

9. Bush, unlike most Americans, gets PLENTY of time off the job
Those of us who are freelancers laugh at this ugly grandstanding.

I've had two days of paid vacation in my entire life, and I'm not young. Except for my freshman year of college, I've been working for a living since I was 15. This pampered nobody has others to suck up to us for how hard he works, yet with a job that should be continuous, he's a feckless shirker.

Fuck him and his apologists.

13. Oh c'mon, give the guy a break!
What work did he do before this? Own a baseball team? Now, compare owning a baseball team to meeting with advisor's every day. See the difference? The man clearly needs 2- 5 week vacations a year to rest up, not just one! Also, he was born wealthy. Everyone knows that the wealthy deserve more time off than the peons. It's the American way.

We have to subsidize the rich, otherwise the American Dream would sputter out in an afternoon.

11. He exercises and takes a nap every day, and is in bed by 9:30 every night!
Edited on Wed Aug-17-05 09:10 PM by Rob H.
And he still thinks it's hard work?! When did he complain--while clearing brush on his "ranch" or right before he headed out on yet another 18-mile mountain bike ride?

It'd be more accurate to say Bush, unlike most Americans, doesn’t really "get" the job.

Edited to add: doesn't surprise me one bit this comes from Newsweek. Lousy whores.

15. Since *'s been elected, I've forgotten what vacation time is!!
Between switching jobs and being layed off, I've been screwed out of so much vacation time it's not even funny. I honestly don't think I've had an honest "vacation" since ass-face was "elected".

16. Well you know, in a way it's not that bad...
Summer is statistically the most dangerous time of the year, in terms of accidental death and severe trauma cases. People are more mobile, they're on vacation, they're doing a lot of stuff out of doors, and it's even worse if it's mind-buggeringly hot out. And we're talking about Texas in August here.

No, I can see this as a month-long festival of opportunity. He has a bike.

22. give me a fucking break. all his work encompasses is to attend meetings
he does no real work. he sits there and listens to others who have to do the work then he decides on what others already have planned.

a sock puppet does more than george walker bush does.

the guy is a lazy fucking bum who could not hold a real job even if someone held a gun to his head.

the man has not done an honest day's worth of work in his life.
