For the president, 38 flavors of bad

George W. Bush is a very popular president -- in Idaho.

Survey USA has pulled together a 50-state survey on George W. Bush's approval ratings. The president gets a net positive approval rating -- that is, a poll result in which more respondents approve of his job performance than disapprove -- in just 10 states: Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Nebraska, Texas, Alabama, North Dakota, Montana, Oklahoma and Mississippi. In two other states -- Louisiana and North Carolina -- respondents are divided evenly on their president.

The other 38 states? Not so good for Bush. They don't approve of him just a little bit in Indiana and Alaska, and they don't like him much at all in Rhode Island, where respondents say they disapprove of the president's job performance by a margin of 68 to 29 percent. Rounding out the bottom five: Massachusetts, Vermont, Delaware and California.

If poll results equaled Electoral College votes, Bush would have about 75 of them right now. It takes 270 to win.

1. That's a cool stat - thanks!
Someone needs to rev up those electoral college maps we were constantly looking at back in 2004!

2. He could get more than that
If he has an approval rating of 48% or 49% in a state then he could still conceivably win it. If you assume that all the approvers would vote for him, then he only needs a small percentage of disapprovers to vote for him if the Democrats present a poor alternative. This is why I was so exasperated when people here would write off Bush as "toast" last year when polls showed him with a 48%, 49% approval rating.

But I'm inclined to think that if we re-did the Bush-Kerry race again that Kerry would win...but not in a landslide.

3. It all depends on who the alternative is
If its someone people find unacceptable, they would vote the stupid guy back in (if he could run again which he can't). All you need is $500 million in tv ads to scare people into thinking libruls will take their guns away, let gay teachers seduce your kids and let them get married, and won't let them pray. Oh, and also, will let terraists come kill us all.

Meaningless poll, unfortunately, except for one significant thing which is 2006. That should be interesting

15. Bush was able to inflate his support in 2004 by ripping Kerry down
Without an enemy to bastardize, he is forced to stand in front of the country on his own merits.

And needless to say, the results aren't good.
