If so, is this not the time to propose an immigration reform proposal that takes the initiative? If democrats fail to define the issue before the right wing shits do, the result will be the same, I fear.

the gay marriage amendment was the wedge issue of 04. They always pick a social issue to use as a wedge and divide people.

Our strength, our superhero power, if we remember to use it, is to say that it is right or wrong without bickering on the details.

If we had stood up and said Moral Values means letting any American marry whomever they love because that's also Family Values, and Moral Values means feeding our hungry and Moral Values means educating our children and Moral Values means affordable healthcare for every American and Moral Values means not fighting in wars for a pack of lies, we would have won.

We really DO know what moral values are and we don't need a preacher or a bible or a republican to tell us what human decency is when they can't even practice it among themselves.

So let them twist words. We'll hang 'em with it, if we can find candidates that aren't afraid to haul rope.

In the theater of politics, you get credit for publicly attacking illegal immigrants, and privately employing them to fatten your bottom line.

You get no credit for actually doing something to address the bosses who employ and exploit illegals because you aren't actually attacking any brown foreigners.

It's 'Republicans are good on national security' all over again.

Killing swarthies visibly and often, but doing nothing to actually improve national security, wins elections.

Actually improving national security, but refusing to indulge the masses taste for watching the spectacle of lesser breeds without the law dying, for their amusement, on basic cable, loses elections.
