Before the invasion, what if George Bush had said....? |
|
"I know that Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11 and we don't know if he has WMDs or not. But since we were attacked by Arabs, we are going to take something in return that is very valuable to them - their oil. Since we know that oil production is going to peak in the next couple of years, we are going to overthrow Saddam and take their oil. We know the international community will not accept this as a legitimate reason so we must pretend that we are going thru the UN and pretend that Saddam is a threat to his neighbors and to us, in order to get some type of international consensus, so that we will not be looked at as a violator of international laws and as an aggressive nation."
If he had said that, would you look at the invasion any differently?

4. Exactly...he couldn't say it. |

But many of his supporters probably believed exactly that. And we are an aggressor.

They don't have that long of an attention span. Bush succeeded because he kept the message simple: We're going after the bad guys.
But to answer your question: of course not.

stealing their oil, any more than anyone in Malibu appreciating someone stealing their home trainer or 100 inch plasma TV. It is morally wrong. Why should the US steal oil? Not lying about the process does not make it correct.
The problem in America is not that the oil prices are relatively high, rather that the distribution of wealth is whacked out.

People opposed to the war would still be opposed to it, because we knew he was lying.
And the war's supporters think that there is nothing wrong with doing what you wrote above.

Also, his strongest supporters already "got" it that this was really what was happening. There were also some people who really believed what he said, but I don't think that there were actually that many or we'd have more righteous indignation as lie after lie is made public.
