What HAS Cindy Sheehan said about Israel?
Edited on Fri Aug-19-05 12:02 PM by underpants
I have heard about Cindy Sheehan's supposed "rants" about the war being about Israel or for Israel mentioned repeatedly by the unquestionably RW punditry crowd and picked up as fact (or not questioned) by MSM. The red flags went up so I did some looking.

I used this as the start of my search:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cindy_Sheehan

A google search of "Cindy Sheehan Israel" turned up the usual suspects of the RW noise machine but little else.

I post this as the result of my search so far. I find no where that she said anything about the war being for/as a result of Israel. I assumed that this had to do with A.N.S.W.E.R. (which has strong opinions on the Israel Palestinian issue) being in any way attached to the Camp Casey protest. When I heard it mentioned (and not questioned) on The Today Show this morning-Scarborough-I knew I had to look into it.

Whether she holds these opinions is not important to me nor does it have anything to do with the focus of the protests in Crawford, in my humble opinion.

Anyone know if there is anything to support this RW talking point? Anything at all?

Last night, I spoke with Cindy Sheehan. I asked her about a particular statement that's been attributed to her, a statement that many have criticized her for, in which she allegedly says the Iraq war was waged to benefit Israel.

Now, here's the exchange we had last night. Take a look.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

COOPER: You were also quoted as saying, "My son joined the Army to protect America, not Israel. If you get America out of Iraq and Israel out of Palestine, and you'll stop the terrorism." How responsible do you believe Israel is for the amount of terrorism in the world?

SHEEHAN: I didn't say that.

COOPER: You didn't say that? OK.

SHEEHAN: I didn't say that my son died for Israel. I've never said that. I saw somebody wrote that, and it wasn't my words. Those aren't even words that I would say.

I do believe that the Palestinian issue is a hot issue that needs to be solved, and it needs to be more fair and equitable, but I never said my son died for Israel.

COOPER: OK, I'm glad I asked you that. Because, as you know, there's tons of stuff floating around on the Internet on sites of all political persuasions, so I'm glad we had the opportunity to clear that up.

SHEEHAN: And thank you, because those are not my words. It doesn't even sound like me saying that.

Cindy's speech at the Lynn Stewart rally

What they’re saying, too, is like, it’s okay for Israel to have nuclear weapons. But Iran or Syria better not get nuclear weapons. It’s okay for the United States to have nuclear weapons. It’s okay for the countries that we say it’s okay for. We are waging a nuclear war in Iraq right now. That country is contaminated. It will be contaminated for practically eternity now. It’s okay for them to have them, but Iran or Syria can’t have them. It’s okay for Israel to occupy Palestine, but it’s – yeah – and it’s okay for Iraq to occupy – I mean, for the United States to occupy Iraq, but it’s not okay for Syria to be in Lebanon. They’re a bunch of fucking hypocrites! And we need to, we just need to rise up. We need a revolution and make it be peaceful and make it be loving and let’s just show them all the love we have for humanity because we want to stop the inhumane slaughter.

{wild applause}

Scarborough stated it as fact this morning. Katie didn't stop him on that point she couldn't wait to hear about his possible Senate run-Joe said he would be talking to his family about it this weekend.

8. love what arianna responds with in her blog today
"It's as if the simple, direct, and starkly emotional nature of Cindy Sheehan stance is too raw for the media to handle in any of the standard ways. So they've taken to treating her with a strange mix of detachment, condescension, distortion, and aggression. It's truly amazing: the MSM want to hold Sheehan's feet to the fire on statements she's denied making about Israel while allowing Dick "last throes" Cheney, Condi "mushroom cloud" Rice, George "slam dunk" Tenet, Alberto "quaint" Gonzalez, and George "Mission Accomplished" Bush a free pass"

Surprise, suprise.

This morning I saw one of those jokers on Fox say "Now we know that she" is a strong aupporter of the terrorist who tried to blow up the Trade Towers years ago, "trying to get his hate-filled message out." (Not an exact quote, but damned close.)

Can you imagine????

14. You're close
One of them compared her to Osama Bin Laden already, not sure which one, Rush, Coulter or one or the other of the American haters.

What she did not say was that her son had 'died for Israel'. That's what they accused her of saying. Then, apparently ABC couldn't back up its accusation because the 'couldn't find the email' ~ another, 'the dog ate my homework' excuse.

So, now, because they can't back up their initial claim, they're just throwing out #%it and hoping some of it sticks.

But here's what's sticking, no matter what they do.

1. She is a mother who lost a son (and they are even trying to deny that).

2.She's asking the POTUS what noble cause he died for.

3. The POTUS doesn't have another lie he can tell that anyone is going to believe, so he's hiding from a grieving mother rather than answer .... and

4. Rightwingers are getting so desperate that they are cruelly, bashing the grieving mother of dead soldier.

5. All the rest is noise. Decent Americans are overwhelmingly on her side. The rightwing has lost control of the debate and are lashing out like wild, trapped animals, and all we have to do is let the American people see their viciousness, out in the open, doing what they've been doing under their rocks for the past several years.

Smashing memorial crosses, smearing a grieving mother, ranting like Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly et al. The average American doesn't hear them on a regular basis. I have made sure to pass along their vile words to every moderate Republican I know, and as I felt when I first heard them, their reaction is usually very negative.

Most people do NOT play the dirty games they've gotten away with for so long. They like to present their case, not smear and attack and rant and scream and kick to get their point across.

Cindy is like a sieve. She is draining out for all the world to see, the scum that got this country into the mess it's in today. At the bottom of the sieve they can see clearly now, the rightwing slime machine in all its glory and they don't like it. Not my Republican family members and friends, anyway.

She was supposedly a supporter of him and his lawyer, trying to get out his "hate-filled speech" (I think that's accurate, if not it's VERY close).

So I guess she IS a terrorist, right? What were we we at DU thinking? How grateful we should be to these clones to set us right!!!

I think they're ramping up the sleaze machine and that we'll hear this all weekend (when it's harder to disprove, w/o Franken &c.), then it will be set in the public's consciousness.

I'd hope that people can get on top of this now.

27. Read Lynn Stewart's speech.

To find out who Lynn Stewart is check out Stewart's speech at the bottom of the Stewart link provided in the original posting. It is quite a few paragraphs in before Stewart says exactly what she did that got her charged.

"The Sheik asked me to make this press release and we all thought it was a good idea because we felt our duty was to keep his name alive in the world, in the real world."

She was then charged with helping the Blind Sheik in the continuance of his crimes. Stewart herself gives an example of what a lawyer should not do because it would be helping the client's criminal activities. The example she provides was one in which it would be wrong to pass along a message to a drug dealer's partners to have them turn off their beepers. So what does she then do? She passes along a message (in the form of a press release) from the Blind Sheik to his terrorist partners.

Now the question is, was it a message that helped the Blind Sheik continue his criminal activity?

It might help at this point to switch over to the case of Matthew Hale. Hale is the leader of an organization that preaches the eradication of all non-white, non-Christian people from the entire planet. He was kind enough to hire a hit man to kill a federal judge which guarantees his incarceration for life. At that time there was some discussion as to whether or not he could be charged in complicity with the murders of two minorities by one of his followers. Hale did not conspire with that man to kill those specific two people. But he did tell that man (and everyone else in his church) they should kill minorities. No charges were brought as he appears to have stayed just barely on the legal side of the line. However, Matthew Hale is not allowed to make press releases because he would certainly use them to exhort his followers to further violence.

The Blind Sheik preaches the eradication of all non-arab, non-Muslim people from the entire planet. It was his followers who executed the first WTC bombing. The Blind Sheik is in jail for his complicity in that crime. Like Matthew Hale, the Blind Sheik is not allowed to make press releases because he would certainly use them to exhort his followers to further violence.

In both cases the argument goes that such press releases would help either man continue his crimes. By that reasoning Lynn Stewart did assist the Sheik in the continuance of his crimes and was subsequently arrested.

Sheehan (about time we got to her) gave a speech at a rally in support of Lynn Stewart who was "charged" with assisting the mastermind behind the first bombing of the WTC. Hence, the link between Sheehan and those bombers.

22. Just this...
"You get America out of Iraq, you get Israel out of Palestine...", there were around 150 witnesses, including Stan Goff, Dahr Jamail, Camilo Mejia, etc, etc... there was some other Indy press, but nobody else did an original transcription as far as I know.

However, she did not dive off into a long rant about her son dying for Israel at the Veterans for Peace Convention.

Read the transcript to get the whole context.

truthout.org carried the transcript as well, replete with my typos; except that they changed 'Bacaville' to the correct 'Vacaville'. (scroll down to the bottom of this link):

26. Brian Kimeade (Fox & Friends) blog:
"I am amazed at the media frenzy around Cindy Sheehan's . . . quest to talk again with President Bush about the loss of her son in Iraq. Casey, her son was killed in April and soon after she met with and was quoted to have been happy with the president’s attitude as he offered her condolences. Now, she is making her stay in Crawford a huge vigil to pull the troops out of Iraq. It’s causing her family, including her grandmothers, aunt and godmother, to say she is using her son’s death to fuel her anti-war agenda and gain promotion. Other grieving parents have lined up against her saying it sullying their kids’ service to run down the cause. Either way, the president addressed it head on and seemed, as usual, to legitimately feel the pain of the rattled parent."

But it was Kimeade who made the claims she supported the blind Islamic cleric jailed on the charges of bombing the WTT in 1993, and that it was her who was trying to get his "hate-filled speech" out to the rest of us. They won't even put it in writing!!!! New tactic?

Douglas Feith, Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle, Michael Ledeen, and policy creators like Rich Mellon Scaife are sole signers to PNAC inside the Likud party.

Cindy's stance on Israel is irrelevant. The noise machine is bringing that point up because its most likely partially true, and they want any exscuse neccesary to sink the anti-war movement.
