"The swift boating of Cindy Sheehan"
CHICKENHAWKS, CHICKENHAWKS; attacking a brave woman who lost her son because of a bunch of lies, how low can they go?
NYT 8/21/05 http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/21/opinion/21rich.html?th&emc=th

CINDY SHEEHAN couldn't have picked a more apt date to begin the vigil that ambushed a president: Aug. 6 was the fourth anniversary of that fateful 2001 Crawford vacation day when George W. Bush responded to an intelligence briefing titled "Bin Laden Determined to Attack Inside the United States" by going fishing. On this Aug. 6 the president was no less determined to shrug off bad news. Though 14 marine reservists had been killed days earlier by a roadside bomb in Haditha, his national radio address that morning made no mention of Iraq. Once again Mr. Bush was in his bubble, ensuring that he wouldn't see Ms. Sheehan coming. So it goes with a president who hasn't foreseen any of the setbacks in the war he fabricated against an enemy who did not attack inside the United States in 2001.

When these setbacks happen in Iraq itself, the administration punts. But when they happen at home, there's a game plan. Once Ms. Sheehan could no longer be ignored, the Swift Boating began. Character assassination is the Karl Rove tactic of choice, eagerly mimicked by his media surrogates, whenever the White House is confronted by a critic who challenges it on matters of war. The Swift Boating is especially vicious if the critic has more battle scars than a president who connived to serve stateside and a vice president who had "other priorities" during Vietna

If we were as nasty and mean-spirited as they are, we have way more material to slam them with. It's a question of how low do we want, or need to go.

Edited to add: I saw a post on another website which said, in response to just such a freeper smear:

Laura Bush's car has killed more people than my gun

2. I hope a lot of people read this
today..including the editors of People magazine who decided not to put Cindy on their cover like they said they would when they were at Camp Casey.

5. Another DUer came up with this (don't remember his/her name):
"They've Slimed a POW, a Triple Amputee, a Purple Heart, and a Gold Star Mom - Why Do Republicans Hate Our Troops?"

I'd like to get an answer from Smirk as to why he considers swift-boating acceptable, other than the obvious -- "victory."

Cindy's impact has been blunted by the Swiftboating.

13. why is that?
its seems we long ago started slipping down the slope to fascism.

do you honestly think, once the energy crisis hits, that the average american will elect an enlightened leader who calls for sacrifice, or the reactionary who will give them an easy target to blame?

because there are 2 easy targets that have now replace Communism as the boogeyman:
1. Mulsim Terrorists
&
2. American Liberals

15. i agree with you...
we are in a giant mess at home and abroad, you know why, so no need to get into all that. but i still cannot give up hope, once we do that ALL is lost. i'm not looking for a miracle, just a slow but steady rebound from the shit hole we are now in. it will take our dem leaders for once in their life to stand up and fight. also we must do our part to let them know why we voted them into office in the first place and the ignorant american people MUST be educated as to how they are hurting themselves by voting repub. it's not easy, odds are against us, but me personally, i will not give up. my first goal is to get rid of santorum here in PA. that's one step in the right direction.

16. Murray & Cantwell hear it from me
all the time. Grow a spine, stand up to them.

Unfortunately, it is beyond them. Too busy caving in & failing to get us Highway $. And here's the rub: they are entrenched, because the alternative is a Republican.

i don't see how giving up all hope would change anything. in the 1930's, liberal Germans had to give up hope & flee fascism, or wind up dead.

but it is monday, and i need a vacation, so i'll concede that things may get better in some small way, possible even before my lifetime ends, say, in 2050.

12. '...to Specialist Thomas Wilson,
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 01:00 PM by xxqqqzme
the grunt who publicly challenged Donald Rumsfeld about inadequately armored vehicles last December....'

his mother was @ Camp Casey last week.

I have a problem w/ this.
'... opportunistic left-wing groups that have attached themselves to her like barnacles...'

If there R left wing barnacles, they R not easily discernible @ Camp Casey. Code Pink sponsored the 'letters to Laura' last week. From the time U arrive, the message is very clear, this is why we R here.... - this is the message..... There is no deviation. Sure Gold Star Families, Vets for peace, Iraq Vets have their banners up but they R all on the same page. There R no A.N.S.W.E.R., Greenpeace, ACLU, NARAL, NOW banners up. Those people might be there but they R there 2 support Cindy and her questions.
