Bush plans bid to rally Iraq support
Texas protests continue as Republicans disagree on conflict

CRAWFORD, Texas (CNN) -- President Bush will launch a new round of speeches to rally support for the war in Iraq, advisers said Sunday, as protesters camped outside Bush's Texas home and polls showed weaker support for the two-year conflict. Senior aides say Bush will attempt to portray the Iraq conflict in the context of long wars like World War II, which U.S. forces fought from 1941 to 1945. They said the president also will invoke the September 11, 2001, attacks, arguing once again that the insurgents battling American troops in Iraq share the same ideology as the al Qaeda operatives who crashed hijacked jetliners into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field.

"We're advancing freedom in the broader Middle East. We are removing a source of violence and instability, and laying the foundation of peace for our children and our grandchildren." But his remarks did little to move public opinion. A CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll conducted August 5-7 found that 54 percent of those surveyed thought the 2003 invasion of Iraq was a mistake. (Full story)

The Iraq issue has followed Bush into his planned five-week vacation in Crawford, where dozens of antiwar demonstrators have set up a makeshift camp near his ranch. The protesters are led by Cindy Sheehan, whose son, Casey, was killed in Iraq in April 2004.

Hundreds of white crosses commemorating U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq are now planted just outside Bush's property, and the demonstrators drew support Sunday from folk singer Joan Baez. "I think Cindy and the women have impeccable credentials -- no matter how hard people try to slander and assassinate their personalities, it is impeccable credentials," Baez said. "I think they simply can't be not listened to." White House officials concede Sheehan's vigil has drawn much more attention than they anticipated.

Aides say Bush will attempt to portray the Iraq conflict in the context of long wars like World War II.

2. It's not the vigil that drew so much attention
but the president's refusal to meet with her

4. Yes...I keep waiting for the media to say "he did this to himself"...
But that's OK.

Let him go out, give his speech about World War II and 9/11, tell the people that they need to stop asking when we're going to bring the troops home, pause, and give that little self-satisfied smirk he gives when he thinks that his mission has been accomplished.

Let him talk about freedom being on the march. Hell, he can even wheel Dick Cheney out onto the stage so he can repeat the "insurgency in its last throes" remark.

All Bush needs to REALLY get his message across at this point is a round red rubber nose and a pair of big floppy shoes. Maybe a little tricycle he can wheel around the stage, and tip over at that strategic "I need a big laugh" moment.

That little chuckle and laugh that he tries to hide from view every time he talks about people dying, war and destruction.

11. What scares me is that look of ecstasy that crosses his face
just before he 'splodes himself with pleasure.
This man loves inflicting grievous pain on mankind.
And he loves talkin' 'bout it.

8. Shades of SS ...
This guy just CANNOT learn a lesson ... he stumped SS and it ended up with less support than when he started, and it was on life support to begin with ...

The hard core people will eat it up ... But, the more he blatently tries to sell the lies instead of just coming clean, it will get worse ...

You know what is funny ... If this freakin pukebag would take even THE FIRST bit of responsibility here, people would forgive him ... He would not even have to tell the whole truth ... All he would have to do is say, "we made a mistake" and the media R/Con whore and mindless minions would make him out to be a saint ...

But, he is too freakin obtuse to even consider it ...

3. Um, before we entered WWII,
Hitler had annexed Austria, Czechoslovokia, Poland, France, and was in Russia. Meanwhile, Saddam before we attacked was defenseless - barely able to defend his own heighborhood, much less take over anything.

Let's see how many media whores mention this disconnect.

6. Bush should use Vietnam if he wishes to talk about long wars...
...that conflict lasted 11 years!

This Benedict Arnold should not be allowed to talk at all about past wars or extending wars or future wars.

13. Doubtful he'll mention VietNam.....
That conflict, where he earned his AWOL moniker and Cheney got his 5 deferments, didn't end up so well for us. I honestly think it would be far more appropriate to use VietNam as an example than WWII, he'll stay way clear of that fiasco, too.

10. yeah, right
"Senior aides say Bush will attempt to portray the Iraq conflict in the context of long wars like World War II, which U.S. forces fought from 1941 to 1945."

Vietnam was a long war, too. Longer than WWII.

"They said the president also will invoke the September 11, 2001, attacks, arguing once again that the insurgents battling American troops in Iraq share the same ideology as the al Qaeda operatives who crashed hijacked jetliners into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field."

The only thing the insurgents and al Qaeda have in common is their dislike of the US, which is true of 90% of the world.

12. He may as well stand in front of us
and compare apples to oranges. "Well, see, they're both fruited and some oranges have seeds, see that's evil those seeds, but then if you eat and apple a day the war goes away. Thank you.........."

14. Bring it on George!
The more you try to explain it, the more people will realize that you are too incompetent to lead this country as a CIC. You make your opposition's best argument everytime you open your mouth.

15. Aides added "He will also invoke motherhood, apple pie, the flag,
pick-up trucks, backyard cookouts, watermelon cuttings, taffy pulls, school fairs, Christmas, Easter, family gatherings, barn raisings, prayer breakfasts, the bible, Jesus, Churchill, Eisenhower, Patton, George Washington, and a few other things we haven't decided on yet and not necessarily in that order."

16. Why is he even giving a speech - isn't he supposed to be on vacation?
What a shame it is that our President can't enjoy his well deserved vacation. That poor man has so much "hard work". It's hard work, it not easy work, it's hard work and he needs a break. Wasn't world war ii hard work? Wasn't 9/11 hard work? Can you imagine how much hard work it was to stall an investigation or pretend no one saw him sitting in that schoolhouse when we were attacked? That's hard work. He's tired and then there's Al Kedda and the Iraqi's are Al Kedda cause they hate our freedom. They're terrismists. Um... It's hard work and at least he's not a pussy. Ye Haw and God bless America and Poland, mussn't forget Poland... heh heh, fuckin liberals.

17. I can't wait to hear what Rove, uh Smirk...
say what they think we need to hear. This bunch dances all over the ashes of 9/11 every chance they get. Rummy's "America supports You Freedom March" is a fine example, and in my opinion; one of the more obscene. A new low...until the next one.

"How about telling Mr. Rumsfeld to leave the memories of Sept. 11 victims to the families?" said Monica Gabrielle, who lost her husband in the attacks.

Administration supporters insisted Rumsfeld was right to link Iraq and 9/11, and hold the rally.

"We are at war," said Rep. Pete King (R-L.I.). "It's essential that we support our troops."

He also said attacking Iraq was necessary after 9/11. "You do not defeat Al Qaeda until you stabilize the Middle East, and that's not possible as long as Saddam Hussein is in power."
