LTTE: Religious fundamentalism is a form of tyranny
From the Pittsburgh Post Gazette:

<snip>

It's disgusting to see politicians like President Bush and Sen. Rick Santorum kowtowing to religious fundamentalists. Instead of looking out for us, these elected officials introduce legislation and spend too much of their publicly funded time supporting issues and wars Jesus would denounce.

In an age when most ministers and priests shirk their responsibility to speak out, it's encouraging to see a talented journalist question the great hypocrisy of our times. A vote for Santorum is a vote for religious fundamentalism, and we know exactly how our Founding Fathers felt about that. On Sept. 23, 1800, Thomas Jefferson wrote to Benjamin Rush, "For I have sworn on the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man."

1. oy
fundamentalist: One in whom something is fundamentally wrong, usually a lack of reasoning ability and a viscious intolerance for those not sharing the fundamentalists' delusions. Thus, fundamentalists are particularly intolerant of those able to draw obvious conclusions from observed facts, those who refuse to seek shelter in comforting falsehoods and those wishing to lead their own lives.

2. It's a great letter...
until they get to the part about Jefferson "swearing on the altar of God."

Any fundie looking at that is going to think "Jefferson was one of us!" when anyone who knows anything about Jefferson knows he hated that crap.

Kind of a poor example, that's all I'm sayin....
