For 3rd Day in a Row, Bush Says Withdrawal Now From Iraq Would Embolden Terrorists
By ELISABETH BUMILLER
Published: August 25, 2005

<<snip>>

The president, who has been under growing political pressure from Democrats and some Republicans over Iraq, spoke in a setting reminiscent of his biggest rallies during the 2004 campaign, on a stage flanked by uniformed Guard members and in front of a red, white and blue backdrop that proclaimed, "Honoring America's Heroes." Patriotic marches warmed up a crowd that the White House estimated at 9,500 people, most of whom received tickets to the event through the military.

Afterward, the White House said, Mr. Bush met for nearly three hours with 19 families from around the country who have lost relatives in Iraq and Afghanistan. The White House provided few details of the meeting.

Mr. Bush met Ms. Sheehan in a similar setting in June 2004, but she has said he acted as if he was at a party, did not know her son's name and was disrespectful to her, calling her "Mom" throughout the session.

In a thinly disguised counterpoint to Ms. Sheehan, Mr. Bush showcased an Idaho woman in the crowd, Tammy Pruett, whose husband and five sons have served or are serving in Iraq. "There are few things in life more difficult than seeing a loved one go off to war," Mr. Bush said. "Here in Idaho, a mom named Tammy Pruett, I think she's here, knows that feeling six times over."

Mr. Bush quoted Ms. Pruett as saying, "I know that if something happens to one of the boys, they would leave this world doing what they believe, what they believe is right for our country. And I guess you couldn't ask for a better way of life than giving it for something you believe in."

Mr. Bush said that Ms. Pruett had four sons in the National Guard now in Iraq, and that last year her husband and another son returned from Iraq, where they had helped train Iraqi firefighters in Mosul.
Then, as the crowd roared its approval, Mr. Bush declared, "America lives in freedom because of families like the Pruetts."

5. He will only lose more as he does this. He is playing to the most base of
his base. We won't ever make a dent in that 20-30% of the population. But the rest of the public will be more appalled by the level of his attacks on a grieving mother. Most people will find it easier to identify with Cindy Sheehan than the callous fool who attacks her.

She wins because she maintains her dignity. Most people see that. Most people are capable of empathy. b*sh is teaching a hard lesson to the masses: Some have no empathy and not enough brains and dignity to feign empathy. The more he and the RW noise machine try to smear her, the more shit they smear on themselves.

19. I think you're right.
I had a feeling this would happen. Bush was going to round up his "supporters" and then get them out there, in the limelight, to upstage Cindy. I didn't really believe HE would get out there with them. (Lesson #641 = don't ever underestimate Bush).

It's very obvious Cindy Sheehan is not going away. She's going to stay there in the ditch, until the end of August. She is a constant thorn in his side, and all his advisors know it.

As long as there are US troop deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan, she will continue to erode his support. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind about this.

Last night, I was driving home from the Community college in Portland. To my surprise, there was a large group of people standing by a large street. They were holding signs that said, "We support Cindy Sheehan". I was so excited, I wanted to go up and join them.

BUSH IS FINISHED.

33. I can't believe Ellizabeth
Bumiller is writing things like.."thinly disguised counterpoint" and "Mr. Bush met Ms. Sheehan in a similar setting in June 2004, but she has said he acted as if he was at a party, did not know her son's name and was disrespectful to her, calling her "Mom" throughout the session.

That's encouraging!

They may be in Iraq, but I doubt they're in any danger. Especially if * used them in his speech.

4. It is so wonderful when the ruling masters...
will acknowledge the work and sacrifice of the naive, yet loyal, peasants. I guess you could say that by acknowledging the sacrifice of the peasants, the ruling lords are contributing to the struggle in their own way.

if you really think this - why hide in Idaho and say it to crowd of adoring sycophants who have been carefully screened while you use another mother as a prop for your pictures. Come on brave guy stand up for what you think.

on edit - I can't spell for beans.

8. With all due respect to Ms. Pruett...
I used to believe in Santa Claus. If I had frozen to death waiting for him to show up on our rooftop my mom wouldn't have said:

"And I guess you couldn't ask for a better way of life than giving it for something you believe in."

If you are privy to what constitutes "the noble cause" may the press contact you?

People are dying to know...

Thank you so much for sending your sons off to Iraq so they can help set up an Islamic Republic that opresses women. In fact if you were in Iraq you would not be able to speak in public especially if you lived in Basra which is in fact a defacto Islamic state even now!

23. This is scary. The Pretzeldent addresses the cannon fodder
"And I guess you couldn't ask for a better way of life than giving it for something you believe in."

Since when is being cannon fodder a "way of life"?

Well, color me a commie, but I'd actually prefer the pursuit of happiness; living under the rule of law; social, economic and environmental justice; representative government and universal healthcare in my way of life - if anyone's asking.

is that this means that Cindy Sheehan has gotten to the president. If he thought her cause was meaningless and did not affect his popularity, he wouldn't be taking shots at her and looking for people to counteract what Cindy Sheehan represents.
