42. "It's been real..." - My defense of Hitchens |
|
"It's been real" is the line one says when they've had a miserable time, and Christopher Hitchens DID have his ass handed over to him.
Hitchens is losing his "edge" big time, but I must defend him to the point that he's more of a BBC / CSpan guy and doesn't really work at the increased pace of American TV. I'm not defending American TV - I WISH they had given him more time (a weekly one HOUR "Daily Show" as we don't have a Friday show?) and I wish the interview had the time to talk about the book as well. That he couldn't talk / think ("redraw the map," Hitch! "Redraw the MAP"!) as fast as Stewart and didn't have the time to get all his 5 syllable words in isn't his fault. (he used one last night that really flew by me - those damn English schools! Where do they GET those words!) Also, Hitchens didn't / couldn't / failed to play up to the audience and the applause was distracting, IMO, especially when you seem to not have gotten enough sleep (ahem).
In the end, however, he came on to plug a book. That's where he makes money, and the book plug was well, non-existent. I think Trent Lott sold more books from Wednesday's show!
I guess that's not much of a "defense"... Consider it that "public defender's" version...

Jon was awesome.
So the drink-soaked popinjay is claiming that Jefferson favored pre-emptive war too so bushboy is only continuing an American tradition? Is that the gist of his new book?

|
Edited on Fri Aug-26-05 11:56 AM by melody
He did all his own work on his farm, was pro-women's rights and pro-civil rights long before most people, and if we'd listen to him, we'd have avoided the Civil War. He did have a paranoid streak (and granted, was "obnoxious and disliked"), but hey, he was a class act next to Tommy "Long Legs" Jefferson. ;-)

Hitchens is a pompous asshat who used to style himself as a liberal -- he sometimes wrote for The Nation, still writes for Vanity Fair -- but who morphed into a vitriolic neocon after 9/11. Here's a description of his transmogrification: http://www.johannhari.com/archive/article.php?id=450

48. So Hitch pulls a Brock. |
|
A lot of those on the Right like to ballyhoo the fact they were on the Left until they discovered how "evil" the Left was. They then make a career out of blasting Democrats.
But when you look into their background you always find that, like Hitchens, they were never a part of the mainstream Left, but part of the extremist element: Trotskyites, socialists, Chomskeyites, etc. People who hate Democrats almost as much as they hate Republicans.
So why is it, when they finally recognize the flaws in their position, folk like Hitchens and Brock make the jump, not to liberalism and the Democratic party, but all the way over to the Right. And then start lumping Democrats in with all those mentioned above? They KNOW Democrats are not Trotskyites, socialists, etc. Yet they are happy to repeat Right lies that we are once they turn against the far Left element.
I guess they're just extremist. The position doesn't seem to matter much as long as it is out there.

I always found him an incredibly funny satirist, but this was nothing short of brilliant.
He really is one of the greatest spokesperson the left has. He can refute pathetic arguments, all without sounding nasty, meanspirited, or condescending - and even better, find a way to make you laugh about it.

refutations of the war in Iraq and the Bush administration I have seen. Stewart is a dangerous man when he wants to be. Sometimes he will give a winger a pass, but there are times when he deconstructs bullshit better than anyone.
