1. Because "Operation Iraqi Liberation" is too obvious.
America is stupid for endlessly trusting anyone that occupies the White House. But their not that damned Stupid! We'll call it Operation Iraqi Freedom.

"OIF" is now shorty for, "Oh I fucked-up!"

2. You know you might just be onto something here.
there was a thread the other day and I said anything other than Iraq War was bogus. We don't use military operations on tombstones or you would find thousands of d-days.
