Report faults dozens of CIA officials-NY Times

Fri Aug 26, 2005 02:35 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A long-awaited CIA inspector general's report on the agency's performance before the September 11, 2001, attacks includes detailed criticism of more than a dozen former and current agency officials, the New York Times reported on Friday.

The highly classified report aims its sharpest language at former CIA Director George Tenet, who is censured for failing to develop and carry out a strategic plan to take on al Qaeda in the years before 2001, even after he wrote in a 1998 memo to intelligence agencies that "we are at war" with it, the paper said, citing current and former government officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The report, requested by Congress three years ago, was delivered to the Senate and House Intelligence committees on Tuesday by current CIA Director Porter Goss. Its preparation and previous drafts have provoked strong emotions at the beleaguered agency, which has borne the brunt of public criticism for a series of intelligence failures, the Times said.

The report recommends that Goss convene "accountability boards" to recommend personnel actions against those faulted by the inspector general, who are identified by title rather than by name. Officials said the only action possible against Tenet and other officials who have retired would probably be to send them a letter of reprimand, the Times reported.

1. The CIA purge is on!
This country will take years to undo the damage done by this administration if we survive it at all.

4. This is just more cover-up.
They don't want us to know who was REALLY responsible for 9/11.

6. Of Course it is, that's why * appointed Porter Goss to his position.
From the NYT article:

"...The findings place Mr. Goss in a delicate position. As chairman of the House Intelligence Committee in the years before the attacks, he influenced intelligence policies and monitored intelligence agencies. As a leader of the joint Congressional inquiry into the attacks, he joined in requesting the inspector general's inquiry nearly three years ago.

Now, as director of the Central Intelligence Agency, he will have to decide whether to take disciplinary action against any of those criticized, risking a further blow to the morale of an agency still charged with protecting the country against future terrorist attacks...."

(And also)

"...Neither Mr. Tenet nor Mr. Rudman would comment, and neither Mr. Pavitt nor Mr. Black could be reached for comment on Thursday. But a former intelligence official close to Mr. Tenet said Mr. Helgerson's team had failed to interview policy makers and intelligence officers outside the agency or to note that the agency was more focused on Al Qaeda than any other arm of government was before 2001...."

"...failed to interview policy makers..." Just like in every other "Report" on 9/11.

5. Tenet didn't refuse the HartRudman Report on Global Terror. Bush did
as soon as it was handed to him on Jan 30, 2001.

7. Maybe the CIA will disclose the really Damning Evid Now
You know the Plamegate story is nothing if the CIA does not refer it to Justice Dept.

They are not goint to take all of the blame in this without exposing the hypocritical pretenders inhabiting the WH.

WH is busy dismantling the CIA and NSA, but they are some of the smartest we have and are good to managing information, so expect more leaks to come which should burn Bush and Co.

12. yes, politically motivated involuntary psychiatric commitment
In general it's declaring someone insane as an end-run around trials, laws, etc. to get them incarcerated.

13. How does a reprimand balance with the Medal of Freedom? Remember this:
http://www.political-news.org/breaking/3990/bush-gives-top-civilian-honor-to-iraq-war-figures.html

<<President Bush on Tuesday bestowed America's highest civilian honor on three leading figures of the Iraq war, including the former spymaster under whose watch the CIA produced flawed intelligence on weapons of mass destruction.

Former CIA Director George Tenet, retired Army Gen. Tommy Franks and former Coalition Provisional Authority chief Paul Bremer stood with Bush in the White House East Room to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

.............................

"These three men symbolize the nobility of public service, the good character of our country, and the good influence of America on the world," Bush said.

The White House quickly came under fire for its choice of recipients from Bush's former rival for the presidency, Democrat John Kerry.

"My hunch is that George Bush wasn't using the same standard when honoring Tenet and Bremer that was applied to previous honorees," said the former Democratic presidential nominee. Past recipients have ranged from former President Jimmy Carter to civil rights heroine Rosa Parks and U.S. sports professionals, entertainers and academics. >>

Will the Corporate Media 'remember' this discrepancy?

14. That's exactly what I was thinking.
Maybe the Congress will try to give him the Medal of Honor now?
