18. OK - here's right back at him
I kinda find that it is in order to defend the Scandinavians here :D

THIS IS HOW WE SEE YOUR CHURCH, PHELPS:

If you google 'phelps' you will get a warning at google:

"WARNING PAGE
Site of anti-homosexual propagandist Fred Phelps of Topeka, Kansas, who styles himself and his followers as a "Baptist Church.""

http://www.google.com/search?q=phelps

And the charming fella has this quote on another site, godhatesamerica.com:

"Thank God for IEDs!!!!!!!!
Thank God for IEDs killing American soldiers in strange lands every day.

WBC rejoices every time the Lord God in His vengeance kills or maims an American soldier with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). "The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked" (Ps. 58:10).

This nation bombed and raided the Westboro Baptist Church, and now the Holy God that Inhabits Eternity is repaying those heinous acts with His retaliatory wrath; "Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord" (Rom. 12:19).

To most effectively cause America to know her abominations (Ez. 16:2), WBC will picket the funerals of these Godless, fag army American soldiers when their pieces return home. WBC will also picket their landing spot, in Dover, Delaware early and often.

Face it, America! You have become a fag-filled nation of flag worshipers and necromancers. Your only terrorist is the Lord your God! He fights against you personally. "And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath" (Jer. 21:5)."

I mean - dude?? :freak:

if Phelps isn't really some kind of parody. Even by today's standards, he just seems over the top.

8. Something I learned about Sweden today:
Edited on Fri Aug-26-05 06:09 PM by 1932
The book The Health of Nations refers to a study on wealth polarization and political attitudes (it turns out that the US has one of the greatest polarizations of wealth among wealthy nations, and also the lowest sentiment among the rich AND POOR that the government should make life better for the unemployed and should provided minimal levels of well-being for its citizens). Americans believe in the Horatio Alger myth -- they like to believe that there's equality of opportunity (even though the US is becoming a very stratified country with little social mobility) but they reject the idea that the government should encourage equality of outcomes.

In one study comparing political sentiments of Japanese, Swedes and Americans the book had to point out that Sweden had one of the most equitable distributions of wealth AFTER taxes, but not before taxes. In fact, before tax income of Swedes was MORE POLARIZED than Americans. (It so happens that Swedes have a high degree of enthusiasm for the idea that the government should take care of its citizens, and Swedes are some of the most content and healthy people in the world.) Incidentally that statistic really tells you something about our tax code. Our tax code is able to take an underlying distribution of incomes that is less polarized that Swedens and turn it into an incredibly polarized distribution of wealth.

The book doesn't make the following point. However, I thought when reading about this study that there is very possibly a direct relationship between the fact that Swedes are so happy and egalitiarian AND the fact that they are able to be so productive and such incredible generators of wealth at the high end. Sweden is able to give peope the chance to make very high income at the high end because they look after their citizens, they give them 18 months of paid maternity and paternity leave, they educate everyone, they keep everyone healthy. The very well-funded safety nets ensure that the acrobats of the Swedish economy are able to reach the heights of the circus tent (and it doesn't protect that super wealthy from having to open their doors to new members of the top echelons -- work and effort always has its rewards).

Swedes appreciate that correlation, which is why the vote for governments that keep that safety-net strong and in-place.

(Sweden also, incidentally, has one of the lowest expenditures of all countries on advertising. According to this same book, the less inequality there is in a country, the harder it is to manufacture desire for consumer goods through advertising, so marketers focus more on making good products than telling people lies about what the products can do for you on TV, billboards, and radio.)

So, if right-wingers hate Sweden, this is probably why. They suggest that American values of greed and wealth polarization are false idols, and that they make people miserable and unhapppy and unhealthy, and that a more communal spirit could make America produce more social wealth and more happiness.
