1. This was discussed last week ...
... aside from the imagery in the video, I fail to see how it's an 'anti war' song. It's a song about growing up, growing apart, and changes set against current themes for the MTV generation.

I don't get how that makes it 'anti war' ??

2. "Aside from imagery in the video"?!!!
ahem...

Video is how music is marketed. They took a song that could be about alot of things and made it full square about the war. Video's allow artists to do that. This particular video is AMAZING AND MADE ME CRY. I can't imagine anyone who actually watches it who won't be profoundly affect by it.

Maureen Dowd in Today's NY Times: "The No. 1 music video requested on MTV is Green Day's antiwar song, "Wake Me Up When September Ends," about the pain of soldiers and their families."

3. I caught the video once, and didn't think of it as anti-war
When I heard it on the radio I couldn't find any anti-war connection.

To me it just seemed to tell the story of a young struggling military family.

I think it would have been much more powerful if it ended with an officer bringing a folded flag to the front door.

4. The song is actually about Billie Joe's father dying when he was 10.
Or that's what he said in some show on VH 1.

I could see why he wouldn't want to make a video about that, and plus the theme of the song could be reinterpreted as any great loss.

I've only seen the video once, so I'm trying to remember the whole thing. I don't believe the kid gets killed in the war, but his girlfriend obviously stresses every day about it and feels as though she already lost him.

Or something like that. I doubt the Freepers would cry though. At least not the fucking worthless assholes who stood across the street from Cindy Sheehan and yelled "WE DON'T CARE!!"

8. Their latest album is kind of vague re. war
especially the Iraq War. We were led to believe that the album was going to be some kind of "masterpiece". They've made better music in the past.
