Camp Casey-Charlotte
Four of my friends and I went to the support for Cindy Sheehan demonstration/anti-war protest in Charlotte, NC, today. There were about twenty people in all who stood on the busiest corner in Charlotte (Central Ave and Sharon Amity). We held signs and waved at drivers. I was SO shocked. I really expected a lot of people to be against our demonstration, but we got overwhelming support from the people who drove past us! We were there for two hours and out of that time, only five people chose to yell uncomplimentary things or flip us off. The vast majority were giving us the peace sign, waving and honking. My signs said "Support our Troops...Ask Tough Questions" and "1900 Dead. $118 Billion Spent...The Truth?? Priceless!!!". My friend's signs were a lot more to the point. She held "Support our Troops, Not our President" and "El Presidente Es Muy Loco." (we wrote that one after we noticed a high percentage of hispanic traffic). We had a blast doing the wave, hollering and waving at people. I had several people who were stopped at the light tell me that they supported what we were doing. One lady asked me about my sign and I told her that I thought that the best way to support our troops was to ask why we were sending them to fight and to make sure that their lives were only endangered to protect America. She said, "Amen!"

It was a really positive experience for all of us. We all plan to take our kids and husbands with us when we go back in two weeks. I also added lawn chairs, sunblock and a cooler with some cold drinks to my list of things to take next time. And more signs!!

5. It was a lot of fun...
Not nearly as scary as I expected. We were really playing up to the drivers and nearly everybody was waving and honking and laughing with us. It was more like a pep rally than anything. Please make it if you can, I think you would feel good about it.

4. Terrific!
Thanks! We need more visibility events, everywhere. I did one in the snow last year, and it turned out to be a lot of fun.

8. I posted your comment
in the Waco Tribune Herald Sheehan Blog in Bush's back yard. I hope you don't mind. I think the folks at Crawford who are not on the DU board should see it. Thank You.

13. Sure...
It's pretty basic. Every Saturday at 1:00 pm people meet on the corner of Central Ave and Sharon Amity Rd. on the Eastland Mall corner (there is an empty lot there). Today the police sat on all four corners for a little while. One of the other demonstrators said that last week someone had said that they were stopping cars and causing trouble, but it was a bogus complaint. Today was very peaceful and one of the cops even honked for us for a long time as they pulled off!!

ville if you wanted to be a part of that (the Gold Star Moms and Iraq Veterans Against the War are splitting up and taking 3 buses across America, ending up in DC on the 24th. They'll be in Columbia the 13th and 14th of Sept and Fayetteville on the 15th). That is so cool that you did that!!! You guys rock!!

17. just a quick thing about camp casey and fox news vs cnn...
Edited on Sat Aug-27-05 10:48 PM by pepperbear
Did anyone happen to be watching "Fix" news today? they reported that there were 3000+ pro-war activists in Crawford, but I slipped over to CNN, and they said that NEITHER side had more than a few hundred and even intimated that the hype we'd heard about 1000s of demonstrators was a little misleading.

Anyone heard from anyone there as to an estimated crowd size? I honestly do not trust fox on this one (well, I usually can trust I'll be entertained at least.)

18. Wouldn't it be something if we could organize a branch
of Camp Casey in every state? They could follow General Chimpy McStuffedcrotch around to his photo-ops.
