More Letters for Cindy

My letter to the editor urging the President to meet with Cindy Sheehan was published in the Detroit Free Press. As you know, I have created a form on my website that anyone can use to submit their own letters to the editor to their local papers. We are seeking 2,000 letters total and we are over 1,700. Please pass on the following link to anyone who may be interested in helping.

Bush should meet mother

Recently, 40 members of Congress and I wrote to President George W. Bush, asking him to give Cindy Sheehan the courtesy of a personal meeting.

First and foremost, as someone whose son has made the ultimate sacrifice for his country, Cindy has the moral standing to meet with the president. Second, Cindy is the founder and leader of the Gold Star Families for Peace, a support group for families of fallen soldiers.

Third, since her last abbreviated meeting with the president in June of last year, much new information has come out regarding the war, not the least of which is the release of the Downing Street Memos indicating that the United States and Great Britain had a secret prewar plan to invade Iraq.

Cindy's actions in Crawford represent the most recent in an American tradition of nonviolent protests, including those by Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King. Her vigil is about the willingness of a single American, who has sacrificed her son for our nation, to speak truth to power.

She deserves not only our support, but our respect and our admiration.

U.S. Rep. John Conyers Jr.
D-Detroit
