Can idiot son's (non)response to Katrina be his achilles heel? |
|
Look around at some of what are now seeing ......
A series of posts here on DU pointing to his administration,s cutting of the Corps of Engineers budget specifically for New Orleans levee issues.
The completely unprepared nature of New Orleans for such a storm. Local government doing its best, but the feds doing little to nothing. Evacuation assistance from the feds virtually non-existent.
Shooting looters stealing food from grocery stores.
A birthday cake for McCain as the flood waters hit.
Time on the beach at the Hotel Del, on Coronado Island in San Diego, to speak to the shrubbery about gutting Medicare as the levee breaks and floods more of New Orleans.
The local media in Louisiana and elsewhere asking if the mainstream media is seeing the same storm aftermath they see on the ground.
And all of this in red states in the south. Is it at all possible that there'll be some blowback? Blowback from his supporters as well as his detractors? Enough blowback that the Right will suffer for it?
I know this seems like I'm looking for political advantage in other people's suffering. I am. But not for any lack of compassion. I firmly and honestly believe that a more caring and engaged president would have done so very much more to help BEFORE things got bad. I can't blame anyone for the storm itself. I have LOTS of blame to lay on the people in power for the lack of response and the lack of vision .... and the lack of any discernible leadership.
Hey george, you motherfucker ... they need more than your simple minded platitudes.

negatively by his "base". So far none of his evasion has affected their affection for him. No-show with Cindy, still no-show with Katrina, Rove is still in the WH, and Bush is biking along seemingly unfeeling and unaware there are others out there in pain.
Better question would be: What does it say about the people who actually support him if none of his evasions of responsibility are an Achilles Heel? What does it say about us as a nation? And, finally, with few Democrats willing to come forward and call him on ANY of this, what does it say about us, as a Party?

10. I would bet that if he went to a disaster area, he'd be poorly met ...... |
|
I'm not even talking about New Orleans. Let him go someplace else, even. And allow real people to see him. I would be he'd be booed. Even by 'southern red-staters'.

11. I doubt that. This IS red state territory, after all. He's their hero. |
|
They'll probably be comforted and enthralled that his lordship actually bailed out of his vacation a little ahead of time to come and throw them some crumbs and phony sympathy. They'll think they've been visited by the Almighty. Especially considering that some of them are telling reporters that - if they weren't religious before, they are now.
Keith Olbermann reported, last night, that just a few months ago, bushco CUT FUNDING TO A PROJECT THAT WOULD HAVE SHORED UP THE LEVEES AGAINST A POSSIBLE CATEGORY FIVE HURRICANE. JUST A FEW MONTHS AGO THIS HAPPENED. I wonder how many people know this, or how many people in the media will report this. Yeah, I know, I know. None of them. They'll be busy finding him a donkey to ride in on, while they wave their palm fronds at him and shout "hosanna!" :grr:

12. I would bet that story about cutting levee funding is on local teevee |
|
and that it is known in the disaster area.
This is where all politics get local ... and as a local story he ain't gunna play so well. Poeple are hurting and when hurting the natural tendency is to assess blame somewhere .... anywhere. Gievn an understanding of the facts (no National Guard, no funding for the levees, etc.) he makes one hell of a sweet target.

24. Have you seen the pictures of this tragedy? |
|
It looks like the majority of the victims have been Black. LA may be a red state but NOLA is Blue through and through.
I think we need to stop this red state/blue state crap. Human suffering is Human suffering.
I think I read a few threads here where the local newscasters were speaking pretty sarcastically about Bush cutting his vacation short.
Bush would be torn to pieces if he went down there right now.
