There is something seriously wrong with the Federal government
When an anticipated hurricane the size of Katrina hits a three state area and

(1. The President is playing guitar and fundraising

(2. The VP is nowhere to be found

(3. Homeland Security is frisking people as they enter the Superdome for protection

(4. FEMA has not formulated and implemented a plan of action

(5. Limited NG and overworked Coast Guard are the only ones helping to rescue

We have trouble, big trouble.

5. FEMA is now belongs to the Homeland Security Department. And we can
rest easy with the experience the Homeland Security Department has with dealing with national disasters.

Bush strums guitars as New Orleans drowns...
As if the 9/11 MIHOP hadn't proved he was out to kill as many Americans as possible already.

6. Where is the leadership?
I just sent letters to my senators and representative asking that question and urged them to speak up to get more help.

7. I agree
And now we hear Bush is going to N.O. on Friday. How about sending some frigging resources there? That's what matters - not his presence.

9. Hmmm.
During natural disasters it is almost always the state National Guard and the Federal Coast Guard that help the local authorities out so there is nothing new there. The LA and Mississippi NGs are both a bit short handed due to deployments over seas so there is something a bit out of the ordinary in other states loaning NG units but still not to bad. Security often checks people for weapons these days though it might be because I'm from a big city though I'm just seeing that as a sensable precaution.

The fact that the disaster preparedness plans are underfunded is a problem and while Bush is displaying what a dick he is by fund raising during a natural disaster the reality is there is little a President can do other then offer federal disaster relief funds which the Congress is in control of.

14. He could go on Tv and ask for national disaster relief
Isn't that what was done for 9-11, he could have asked governors
everywhere to immediately coordinate rushing local available guard
units with army food supplies, tents and bedding to relief sites,
he could have sent in troop ships to handle large numbers of those
being evacuated. He could have offered lodging at safe areas,
he could have done a lot of things except vacation and eat cake with
John McCain.

13. Doesn't look like we learned much from Ivan or Andrew.
That's what happens when you think your manufactured reality is all that is important.

And this is a man who thinks he is a war president?
He is not fit to run anything.

And those behind him are only concerned about their corporations and their Hedge Funds. They can loot America but they can't sustain America and God knows they can't build America.

18. I've been bitching about this: WHERE IS THE NAVY?
And today I hear that 3 or perhaps 4 Navy ships will be sent from VIRGINIA! Soon. "Who Knows?" (Rummy's voice inserted here.)

For me this is beyond belief.

I grew up on Navy bases -- and ALWAYS my dad and other Navy personnel were FIRST on the line to help during natural crisis. Floods, Tsunamis etc.

So I was expecting reports of the NAVY -- and my contacts within the West Coast Navy tell me that as of last night no notifications or requests that personnel and equipment be sent to Gulf States. If the Navy were involved -- as SOON as the Navy were involved the Navy's PR guys would have made sure that the media whores were aware that the US Navy has arrived!!! This I know -- because we military brats used to time how long it would take the Navy (or Air Force, Army, Marines) PR department to get camera's out to cover the efforts. The men would be doing the work from their hearts but the PR guys covered the efforts to be part of the next budget requests. (Just a bit of military politics here <grin>).

Yes WE ARE in big trouble. We are on our own -- as Seattle found out when they were hit by an earthquake in year one of bushie's reign.

Countless times people have pointed out that the military is pushed beyond its limits and that if a real crisis happened in the US -- the military wouldn't be able to preform as it has in the past. Now we know that these observations were absolutely correct.

From my memory as a military brat -- I can tell you that military personnel would rather be helping out. I know that helping out and doing whatever they could to save lives ALWAYS meant a lot to my dad and the other military personnel.

This is really disturbing for me to hear -- the lack of response by the Navy.
